- Part 1 of my BMW E28 524td rebuild series. Rebuilding the M21 (Metric Mechanic 2.8 Rally) engine and Getrag 260. This is some of the work involved in restoring and improving a classic BMW. Thank you for watching.
My cousin owned a 524 TD back in the early 1990s but no one knew how to work on it I loved hearing the sound of that car
Awesome. Cars bring family together. That's my jam. (Why do I feel like Vin Diesel typing that? 😂😉) Thanks for sharing.
Keep it going with the 524td! I love mine and love other people who own them
👍 Thanks
so where locate drive belt tension roller? bmw part 11312241087 discontinued
I had one from 1988 to 2007. I miss that car and should never have sold it
You are the best and you done your job thoroughly thank you for this i hope that in future we will see more restored bimmers.
I'm honored. I'll do my best and I hope it inspires others. 😉
I have an odd obsession with these cars, would love to see more! Cheers!
No prob😉
Congratulations!! Incredible job! I rebuild the same engine m21 from a e28 but put it in a e34 524td with broken block. I did it with stock parts and hope keepen it for the rest of my life. Love that car and that engine. Now are working in the air conditioner and soon gotta give it an everyday use. Now I have a e60 525i but not even close fun as an e34 524td. Sorry my bad english and thanks for this great video!!
😉I understood it all. BMW love. 👍 Thanks.
Hell yea! Loved every bit of this!
Thank you sir.
Great video and a very unique build. Looking forward to seeing more of this car! Always wanted to manual swap one of these. Catchy soundtrack btw!
I need some help man, and you seem like a legend!
Sorry For the late reply. That's real cool of you. I'm humbled. What could I help with?
Pls keep on puttin videos online about the status of this project. I drive a 86 524td. Best engine
Yes sir. 👍 Thanks for the motivation. I'll try and finish part 2 in the next couple weeks.
I drove 100 miles on '85 BMW 524TD today's.
Hi,
Great great build. You can see the passion and competence at every step of the way - I enjoyed watching very much.
I was wondering if you plan to do something to the head, especially as you are planning extra boost? These are known to be the weak point in m21s, and tend to crack between the valve ports. I have a theory that you could mitigate the problem by polishing every affected surface to mirror finish (and quality is of utmost importance here), as this will stop/slow down crack initiation (usually starts at some surface imperfection). Part 2 of my theory is that keeping the charge temperature in check should def. help, so this engine would benefit from the most generous intercooler that can be fitted there.
That's just the theory though - never had my hands on an m21 to test it out. One day maybe - I have a thing for e28s, and with diesels, they are such quirky cars...
Thank You. I totally agree about the intercooler. I have one and I'll do a video on it for sure. Also, my 2.8 engine is 18:5.1 compression. Stock (if I remember) is about 22:0.1. The waste gate is set to 16 psi. I installed an EGT probe and AEM Wideband to monitor exhaust gas temp and air/fuel mixture. As for the mirror finish on the combustion camber, I passed on that. But I get why you mentioned it. Thanks for the suggestion.
Coming back to the beginning of the journey! If you ever want to do it again on a different 524td, I volunteer.
M21
Wow. That means a lot to me. Thank you. Someone close to me likes to tell me I'm waisting my time with my e28 524td. If you need support you can call me at work, Metric Mechanic 573.765.1269 and my instagram is bimmer.bear.
How you come out the cut with the best video on RUclips 🙏🏽
Real cool of you. Thanks.
Where is part 2 ? Pls come soon
Hello Teddy, can you tell me the numbers of pistons, rings and connecting rods. I want to build my motor on the same layout
Gostaria de saber
Jim Rowe owner of Metric Mechanic designed these parts. The 2.8 M21 is an 81mm bore by 89.6mm stoke. You will have to bore your block and get a different crank from an M54 3.0 or S52 3.2.
@@teddyroweshow muito obrigado
tell me, is it possible to make an atmospheric motor from m21d24td? if the attachment is put from atmospheric
love the passion i what you do .
is this what you do for a living ? either way awesome
Sorry for the late reply. Yes Sir, it's what I do for a living. Incredibly thankful for Metric Mechanic. My parents started this in the late 70s. Jim and Mary Rowe.
Part 2 🥺🥺
We are still waiting for part 2.

bought 234 E30, the engine lived on five cylinders. in the fourth, corrosion and the connecting rod are bent, this is due to a crack in the cylinder head. got a good condition turbo block with a crankshaft from the e34, I want to assemble it on my living engine parts. but very little information anywhere
Hello Nik. Sorry, I may have a translation problem. I am in the US and we only got the e28 524td for a couple years. NON turbo diesels never made it to the US and we didn't get the e30 324d or td. I understand your problem with trying to find information. As you pointed out, trying to find a good head is important. A cracked head could leak coolant into a cylinder causing it to hydro-lock. If you can I'd recommend building a turbo diesel instead of a non turbo. I hope I understood your question correctly and thanks for watching.
@@teddyroweshow Thank you! I will repair the crack, it is safer than buying another cylinder head.
I'll try to assemble the atmosphere of the engine all the same, it's much cheaper and easier in my case
Greetings from macedonia can you do some more parts on this , i own 525 tds e34 1996
Great video Teddy!! Im planning on buying one of this 524td any recommendations? Are you planning on installing an IC on this engine?
Sorry for the delayed response. Yes on the intercooler. As for recommendations I personally will put up with anything as long as the body is good or okay. Meaning no body damage and no rust (or very little rust depending on where it is). It's subjective. How much work do you want to do or what kind of work? I'm not an auto body guy. If you find a beautiful running example, chances are its worth what ever the owner is asking. I hope you find that e28 524td and thanks for the question.
More videos coming?
Where are you located at? Would you consider rebuilding mine? I love your attention to detail.
🙏Thank you Jonathan. I live in the Ozarks of Missouri and yes I would enjoy rebuilding your E28 too. I'm honored to help anyone keep these cars on the road. Currently I'm backed up with work and my personal projects. I have our only lift tied up with my 524td project and 2 customer cars (635csi and a 2002) are next. Our family business is Metric Mechanic. We are a full machine shop. Feel free to call or Email (or RUclips). 573.765.1269 or teddy@metricmechanic.com. Thanks again Jonathan.
@@teddyroweshow I have an '85 BMW 524td. Got brand new alternator and battery in motor but it won't charged? Thanks for your BMW 524td help. Thanks.
Is the 260 bell housing compatible with the 2.4 block or do you have to modify? Just got a clean 524td and I’m looking into doing the manual swap.
Sorry for the late response. Yes sir. The M20 and M21 have the same bell housing bolt pattern. Thanks for the question.
Great content! I have 89 e34 524td and 84 Lincoln LSC 2.4td m21.
Great to see someone working on and improving those engines!
BTW are u bored it to be 2.8L ?
How much power it gonna gain?
Thank you sir. 🙏 I have an 81mm bore. 1mm over bore. Stock is 80mm. The rest of the displacement gain is from the 89.6 crank found in the (us) e36 M3 (S52) or M54 3.0 engines. Stock M21 crank is 81mm. I got the sleeve/bolt kit from MM to switch a chain driven M5X crank to a timing belt. I'd be happy with 230ish tq and 180ish hp. Boost might be around 12-15 psi. Also planning to make black diesel. Honestly, not sure but I do have a few pumps to play with and a dyno close by. Again, thank you. Glad to know I'm not the only one. 😄
where can one find after market discontinued BMW 11312241097 drive belt tension roller????
Where you found the Pistons? Can i buy a Set?
Metric Mechanic
More vids!???
Forza ragazze!
This probably just speaks to how weird/OCD I am but the cleaning parts between 14:30-16:30 were oddly satisfying lol
Much love cuz. 🙏
Do you upgraded also injection pump ?
Thanks for the questions. Currently I have not upgraded the pump. Just played with the available adjustments. Under WOT/ full load the wideband reads 16-20, it starts to get a little lean towards 5000rpms. EGT still looks good. Taking my time with it. I want to see how much I can get out of the stock pump before I change the pump head. So for no problems. Turbo is putting out 15-16psi with the external waste gate, and an MM Rally 2.8.
@@teddyroweshowi am strainght rebulding to 12mm head unit. But dont know if use stock or different camplate to get good rpms and power.
Как быть с ТНВД что переделывал очень интересно какую плунжирную пару поставили
hi Teddy, what oil do you recommend to use in the Getrag 260??? thanks bud
Thanks for the question. I use ATF because that's what BWW originally recommended for manual transmissions. Never had a problem. Dexron/Mercon 3 ATF or Redline D4 ATF.
