About Me:
I'm a Washington born rider based in the great pacific northwest, i enjoy making videos and more importantly love riding bikes! Ive been riding since i was a kid for fun but got competitive in the last few years. I hope you enjoy watching me as a rider and content creator improve over time.
For 10 years I rode with 80-100mm of travel on a hardtail 26 inch wheel bike and have done up to 4-5ft drops. Bottomed out the suspension but the bike and I survived. Just purchased a full suspension 29er with 130mm of travel and cannot wait to ride it!
Pibbles 'n Bits sounds sick man! Stoked for you, NOW GET OUT AND GO RIDE!!!!
I will thank you, but first I need to get off of youtubes haha.
Pibbles 'n Bits yeah, I ride my 120mm bike on downhill bike trails. But just saying that I’m getting a 170mm enduro bike tomorrow.
Sick man, enjoy 🤘
Hope you're still enjoying both bikes Bro!
I ride a 150mm rear and 160mm front travel bike and it's perfect :D
The difference is not only travel. Most common DH bikes have spring suspension which feels such so much more plush on rough terrain.
But there are also some 160mm spring/coil bikes with aggressive head angles - that does it for most parks.
TC, Keep doing these videos and demo all of he bikes you can, I am sure you have some good knowledge about what you and where you ride. I a lot older and ride of flat, trails, these days because of where aim live now in Florida. But, I cut my teeth on trails in the late 80's and early 90's. And I was on a hard tail those days, to be exact a 1989 Trek 830 fully ridged & 1992 TREK 7000 aluminum with a after market 80mm elastomer front fork. I rode in SoCal where I was born and breed. Keep shredding and Live-Life-Loud. And you're right the skills I learned back then and through out the years have help me a ton!!!
Only The Bold Project thanks for the kind words! it means alot to me that people are enjoying the content that I've been putting alot of effort into!
This is better than most newer "how much travel" mtb videos here on the tube...great job and advice👌👌💥💥
I have a crappy bike with 50mm of travel on the fork and 70mm on the rear sus. I use it on downhill black diamonds and sure its not the best way to ride but most importantly ITS FUN AS HELL.
I ride a 120mm front and 120 back and its ok for me i wanted to get a 180, 200mm bikebut eventually for me now doing street freestyle and trails i have been using a old super v 700 and i love it its old but a good old bike and the thing i like about the old bike is that it looks like a dh bike with dual crown but it only has a old headshok moto 120mm travel so it takes some of the dh parts and mixes it with the enduro its kind of a hybrid also wheigths somehow 14kg 30 pounds
I own a giant trance 150 front 140 rear. Perfect for what i ride, climbs like a mountain goat but descends like a beast
I have one of these too but found out having an Anthem also is perfect for the area that I live. The Anthem goes like a bat out of hell but washes out easily on the fast trails so I use the Trance for the rougher and and twistier trails but mostly for its cornering and grip. I love both of these bicycles!
I have 140mm 29er. Best bike you can have. Especially if it's one to do all bike.
Zagica can you Ride Downhill with that
pat Yes
150 to 180 seems to be the sweetspot, specially for ebikes and enduro bikes, I bought a 150mm with 27,5 plus tyres and it feels like a 170mm, so I think for me it is the ultimate sweetspot and balance, I can tackle anything and still pedal swiftly
i think i would like to travel about 3 times a year .... but realistically , once a year is more affordable
at that speed u could ride a monocycle
Joao Pedro Costa Filipe yeah, those trails are kinda sucky because there is no areas to really go fast because Everytime you do you have to stop to sneak around a tree
Joao Pedro Costa Filipe I was thinking a gravel bike would suffice.
You mean unicycle?
Lol freakin loser.
My crippled sons balance bike would do for this Nerds speed!
Great video I hear the same thing when it comes to carbon versus alloys/aluminum it's all on preference and what you're looking for in the bike. I've ridden common saw meadows for years and absolutely love the frame they use in my opinion it's one of the better frames out there.
so i dont have many uplift parks in the area but iam still never leaving my Dh bike. it just gives me the freedom to build stuff i could not hit on a trail bike or enduro bike.
Very nice put together and i agree 100%. the waste of energy riding energy was excellent explaination.
I'm on a 150 front 130 rear and I'm very happy with what I own.
i wanted 150/150mm jeffsy, but my local most used brand (that 2/3 bike shops localy sell) is RockMachine. The problem with rock machine is that in 27,5 wheel size you can get 170/160. And only that, well its great because i have gnarly trails everywhere and bike park 10min away from me. But here it beside from bike park you do 40% climb 60%DH somewhere its 50-50. OR i can get 140/140mm 29er and that is no-no to me. cuz 140/140 and cuz 29er. and maybe i can buy (also from RM) 140mm agresive hardtail, but i have hardtail already and i know the pleasure of full-sus and it would´nt be really much uprade. ye, RM bikes are well build but 170/160 can´t climb very good. and that is my problem... Thanks for any advice :)
Great video to give some perspective.. bigger isn't always better :)
Thanks for posting. About to sell my Devinci Django and go for something big or BIGGER so the "how much travel do I need?" question is definitely on my mind.
I am not the best i would say im a „beginner „ i bought now a canyon torqe in front 180mm back 175mm
I have a 150mm and its not enough, buying a 180mm tomorrow and hope it will do.
I ride a specialized demo 8 carbon and I put a one by ten on it and it rides like a enduro
I did 2 years on a hard tail so I go good
i have 80mm front travel hardtail and my skill in 1month is grat
Reason no one cares is because you can adjust or lock your suspension. Some like Scott even offer you lock in 3 position on both front and rear with 1 push or use spacers. I'd say 150 both front and rear is must have today unless you are pure XC racer.
The Xardas I disagree
The closest DH track to me is 40 minutes away and my Scott gambler is my most used bike lol.
Grabbing a Meta SX V3 within the next 3 months. looking forward to the upgrade vs my 2015 DB Atroz Comp :D.
Has anyone ever fallen off the cliffs that you were riding on. That looks like a long way down?
Im riding a old super v with 120 upfront and 50 back its a bit unbalanced but it works good and is plushy
Good video and reaffirmed my thoughts. Can you describe your experience purchasing a Commencal.
+wilcotrails my experience was painless, just went online placed my order in the commencal USA store and found the bike in my doorstep in a few days
When do u go to duthie, I
LOVE DUTHIE
MattsPlanet. TV alot, usually 3-4 times a week
Just what I wanted to know. Thanks ;)
excellent video.....
Might as well just rent on lift days
Excellent video bro. Good info
What trails are you riding in this video? I live near Seattle area and would like to try out.
nvm i saw your comment.
You need just enough travel to go and get a half decent mic that doesn't make my ears bleed and my head want to roll away.
Phishilip152 k Phil, I'll work on it boi, at least I have a bike
Trail Chasers at least your posting videos and helping others is what matters. Shouldn't be too anal about audio quality, video quality and bikes is what matters most. Have a good one man thanks for the Cane creek conversion video about to setup my bike with some rock shox when they come in.
actually no, audio > video quality.
Then it's much cheaper too.
just get a camera with a mic-in (Panasonic G7 for instance) and a Rode video mic go and it's more then good enough for youtube.
A half decent front fork will easily cost double the video gear required for good quality video and audio.
Compared to many other channels out there the audio quality isn't as bad as you make it out to be. This isn't in the realm of GMBN/GCN/Seth's audio quality but they have an entire editing team and gear. The only 'issue' with audio quality that I hear (and I'm picky) is the background hiss. The talk-overlay content is good which helps me get over the hiss. Not sure what you're currently using Trail Chasers but maybe look into a Zoom H2n off eBay on the budget side as a starter. I just started viewing your channel, keep it up.
Just turn the volume instead of complaining like a snowflake 😆
Good video bud, subbed
bro i dont ride my bike on hill i just ride it like mix offroad and on road so is 100 mm is best for me or not and also im 16
I'm thinking about getting the diamondback release 2 .. what do you think about 130 rear, 150 front?. I'll only hit green and blue park trails about once a month. I'm asking because I could get a mission at 160 front and back but I feel that's too much for hill climbs and the twisty single track of my area. Thx and love the channel! !
Aye duthe is where I go
I NEED 400 !
Good video!
is 100mm not enough travel?
Yes of course 100mm is enough. If you place a rule next your travel even 130 is only 3cm (or 30mm) more. The difference is only the size of a small knuckle on your little finger.
I would recommend starting out with smaller travel and work your way up when you get better and more confident. That way you develop better technique instead of relying on larger travel and developing bad technique.
@@Abccba265 Yes
Nicholaus Straach like yes but its more xc then trail so better some 120mm but u can ride on it sure
duthie is awesome
Just started mountain biking....what is travel??
Hey, just moved to Washington. You think a 150 full suspension can handle Steven's? It seems like its on the tamer side of lift parks.
150 mm can handle most bike parks, even 130 could. Trail bikes do fine at bike parks, they’re more fun to play with.
What trail is he riding?
Would you be willing to do a bike review on your Meta? I just recently purchased a 2015 Meta V3. Would love to see your setup compared to mine
MLO VISUAL yeah, I'll make sure to get a video up in the future, it's on the schedule for videos but I may switch it around
@trailbitch i bet you wont, you fucking liar
Jacob Nichols k Jacob, maybe I will, maybe I won't, just remember I know where you live, plus people can see you in my Spanish skit
+MLO VISUAL the video on my meta amv3 will be up tomorrow
Dh all the way my guy
I would do that on a carbon hardtail
Jarrod James yeah
, the trails here are all xc trails in Anacortes, I'm still searching for better trails there
i bouhgt 80 mil travel 26 inch hard tail its avesome man slow you are but so fun
when you used to rock the diamond back Hook. did you ever bottom out while trail riding or jumping it with the stock forks. and do you still ride it?
not sure bth
@@tremolony4924 4 years ago, this still wouldn't have been useful. Lol
@@stanggang768 🤣🤣
I have ridden a full suspension for about a year now. I have 140mm front and 140mm rear. I have used this on dedicated dh tracks, jumps and long rides. I have developed many skills on the bike but i'm now looking for something a little more beefy. Anything 160mm and up. I love dh bikes and i would like to dh race. However, I like hitting my local trials which have a lot of up hills and the descents are only tame. I was looking at 2 bikes one had 200mm travel and the other had 170mm front and 165mm rear. Would the 170mm hold out on races or would i need the 200mm. My local bike park does have a lift ( a truck that takes you to the top) and that park has many dh tracks.
archie fox if you can only have one bike and still wanna ride trails then without a doubt I'd do the 165, 170, you could still race the 165 170, I'd just put some offset bushings to slacken it for race days and get some dual ply dh casing tires and call it good, if you looking at a yt capra or something like that I'm sure it can handle all the dh trails, however if you shuttle alot (more than 3 times a week) i think it may wear out quicker than a dh bike, while downhill bikes are fun they truly are one trick ponies and I find it hard to justify owning one with how good the current crop of modern Enduro bikes arw
Ye cheers man I probably will go for the 170. I only shuttle about twice a month anyways and all my friends like to go on long rides and i think i'd struggle on the dh XD
archie fox if you are looking to race mostly i would go with the 8 inch travel bike. but what seems to br your case i would go for the 170 enduro bike. my favorites are the yt capra and commencal meta v4.2. im also getting into downhill racing but i live in ashville North Carolina so i went for the 8 inch because the terrain here is to wild for the nimble 170 bikes. and ive had this conversation with many bike shoo mechanics and they all said go for the 200 instead of the 170 if youre gonna race
How good would a 75mm travel bike be? (Front suspension)
Beginner
140mm is too much for me, will go 130mm for next buy.
Hey love the channel I’m getting into riding a lot more harder stuff in so I’m thinking about getting a 2020 Cannondale habbit 4 with 140 mills in the front would you say that’s enough
I mean I literally ride 80mm with a Norco plateau so definitely
Hi, what "little precations you may take, to make shure bike holds up for lift use" do you mean? Thanks.
Гобі Коржос dual casing or dh casing tires, add pressure front and rear on the suspension, add rebound feont and rear so that when the oil circuit heats up it still acts normal
Wow you're fast:) Adding rebound means slowering rebound? Just got my first full sys bike, so sorry if i'm asking too basic things:)
Гобі Коржос yessir, id just add a click so that way it isnt too slow but allows the shock to still have decent dampening by the end of the run
Thanks a lot!
you need to link the map of the trails on the video
Hi, where is that pier/lake? It's beautiful
lexugax anacortes washington on roasrio beacj
Oh nice, I'll have to try.
can I increase the size of my travel on my Giant Talon 2 2018, I am riding it now with 120mm travel can I have more? just woondering
I suppose you could go up to 130mm but I'm not too sure about anything close to 150mm, it might mess with the geometry of the bike in not a great way
do you think it would be possible to increase travel on the Raleigh Kodiak 2? lol I'm on all of your videos
And for you Atroz did you have to force the 190 in or was it an easy fit
+Umbrace Titan no idea tbh, the best people to ask is Raleigh themselves, they have live chat that's really easy to use
Trail Chasers lol doesn't matter anymore, the bike went out of stock. I'm back on the atroz just I think the coil will be to stiff. I'm only 140 pounds
Hy am looking for trail mountain bike for beginners that can support my hi of (6.2)and my
waigh of 280lbs
Thanks
New Guy8786 I'f you have the money I'd get the new commencal meta trail v4.2 or if you want something that can also be used for lift use at bike parks I'd look at either the meta am v3 or the meta am v4.2
ya but do you even do 10 foot drops bruh?
im gona get a kona supreme operator and have a 1x12 on it
JΣPΣ lol i dunno if that would work because it needs to have a 148x12 with an xd driver to have eagle
oh does it, would 1x11 work?
Just curious, what made you choose the am over the sx?
the am has more modern slacker and longer geometry, while the sx ahs more travel it doesnt feel as confidence inspiring due to the steeper head angle and shorter wheelbase, the sx will be a bit more playful but if you want to go fast downhill the am is better than the sx due to the longer wheelbase and slacker headtube angle, it may have 10mm less travel front adn rear but the leverage ratio on both bikes makes them feel like they have relatively similar travel (we are talking about an extra 1/2 inch of travel on the sx vs am)
Nice, thanks for the reply. Love the channel by the way
Hey man if you ever wanna ride I could use a riding buddy!!!
Is 75mm travel on a hybrid bike good???
Gavin Gabriel 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 u need minimum 100 mm
No for like a hybrid bike
Im new to this bike game
Gavin Gabriel 75 mm is good for city .. for offroad no,it s not good
Oh ok because im using my bike for going to school and in the city
Thx for the feedback
Gavin Gabriel no problem👍🏻
will 140mm both be good?
ye
i though bottle rocket can do anything
What trail is that in the video?
3rd Rock Tattoos & Piercings this is a trail in the Anacortes community Forest lands in Anacortes Washington, the trails actual name is west 505 but here it's nicknamed poopy dick by the locals (makes sense during winter) muddy and the whole trail is shaped like a dong
I'm always looking for new spots to ride. The views look good. Thank you
3rd Rock Tattoos & Piercings yeah, you can download trail maps for the Anacortes community Forest lands, they have A TON of really great and beautiful trails, I highly recommend the cranberry lake loop
Saves in mechanical issues that are sure to happen
Definitely not my kinda trail. I would've crashed many more times. Lol.
stop using 'honestly speaking' or some other form of the expression too much.
You seem less honest for using it too often.
I will try my best! Thanks for the tip
I feel like you just bashed people that like to ride a dh bike. 😂
MrMreasygoing lol, sorry if I came off that way, I have nothing against them and love dual crowns, I was trying to say that unless you only ride lift stuff or live right next to a bike park it's a pretty hard thing to justify
+MrMreasygoing sorry if I came off that way, it's just that for most people 160 is more than enough, unless almost all your riding is lift and you hardly ever pedal to the top I think it's pretty tough to justify a dh bike, nothing against them and I personally love a good dual crown but for most it's overkill
Trail Chasers it's all good, keep up the good work on your channel
170mm is what I need:).
Oi oi
