I paused this video at 8:21 minutes to make this comment. This is actually the best video i have watched on this topic ever since i started vo for my channel.
Josh Meyer is the VOICEOVERMASTER for sure. He helped us with our EQ settings and they were right on. He knows his stuff. Retain him for your sound, audio, and voice over needs. Major thumbs up for Josh Meyer
I stand 4-5 feet away from a shotgun mike. I knew boosting gain was not the way to make me louder, but its all I knew to do. I had no idea a compressor could make me sound louder without clipping gain. I adjusted the compressor settings and its working great, thanks!
The best video on the subject I have seen! Unlike all the others I have watched, you used really good examples all the way through...thank you so much!
Hire Josh Meyer to help you with your Voice Talent and Audio Needs. VoiceOverMaster is not just a title, it is what he is and what he does. Major thumbs up for Josh Meyer. He helped us and he can help you. Hire him, he is a Master at this.
Great tutorial! I really appreciate your approach to teaching. I was overwhelmed and lost last week, took a timeout, walked through your recent 2022 Audacity tutorial and some of your other videos (like this one), and I'm glad that I could find your channel. Many thanks!
I have read a few articles about dynamic audio compression but they left me more confused than enlightened. This video was very helpful. The demo with Audacity was excellent. Thanks for the tutorial.
What a fantastic overview with a well-paced delivery. My only observation is to clarify the term congruence, which is used prolifically in the context of sound. Superb video.
finally i'm satisfied with a compression video for audacity! thank you so much!!! the other i've seen are all like "just keep trying till you find the sound you like" and explain nothing about the features.... this video actually explained it to me thank you so much! I'm liking and subscribing, amazing!
Josh!! Thank you so very much for sharing your incredible talents with us! I have only just started a Podcast and your tutorials have been game changing for me. I downloaded your Female EQ's (all 3) and LOVE the effect they have on my recordings. I haven't posted anything yet, but you will be in the credits, not just for your amazing EQ's but your generosity of heart to share them. Many blessings my friend, Deb 🥰🥰🥰
I'm gonna enable notification on this channel. i wish you make this type of detailed video about normalization, EQ, and other audacity settings. Thanks
At the end of this video, i can confess that as far as Compressor is concerned, you have solved my major problem. Thank you very much. I appreciate you.
After i made this comment, i went on to create this channel and apply this and right now this second channel is doing far better than this other channel i used to make the above comment. Thank you ones again, Josh
Short Video, not wasting my time but you see? all the informations and details I need are covered in just one single video! YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW THIS VIDEO HELPS ME A LOTTTT bro. you are amazing and talented! I believe your videos will help tons of people nowadays in making their content. you will be a legend someday, just keep doing on this great stuff bro👊 Terima kasih banyak 🙏
Josh. Great video. Thanks again for helping me get the right equipment, correct settings, and techniques. It has made such a difference. If anyone is needing help... Josh is your best choice to help.
Thanks Josh. You've been my "Go to Guy" for some of the problems I've had with my music vocal recordings. I took up singing and recording as my hobby when the virus lockdown started. It might seem strange to say that I've quite enjoyed being locked down. So thanks again. Cheers👍
Two people told me they found my voice soothing. So of course I had to record myself reading bedtime stories, because all my friends are stressed the freak out and I wanted to give them something that could help them out . Then, I struggled and got frustrated because I wanted a nice recording, obviously, but I know jackshit about sound stuff. And now I feel hopeful because you explain stuff nicely AND I GET IT and I'm so going to bingewatch your videos once I've slept a bit :p
Where were you when I started out 8 months ago. I completed an audiobook on Amazon and probably could have done it in half the time or even less if I had known you then.
I see you haven't uploaded to this channel in a couple of years, but if you ever come back I'd love an update to this tutorial for Audacity's new compressor. It seems like it works completely differently with the same(?) settings (seems to make the loud parts quieter rather than the quiet parts louder), and now that "ratio" is no longer in the "2:1" style of format it feels a lot harder to understand all the settings and apply your video to it. Luckily the current version I have (3.7.0) still has "legacy compressor" which matches your video, but if they ever removed it (a possibility since it's now a "legacy" effect) it'd be rough to get the same results from your demonstration lol.
I was confused as to why the track was louder after compression instead of quieter. Upon review I noticed that you put a check mark on "Make-up gain for 0 dB after compressing." If I understand correctly, you are compressing the louder portions of the track, but then amplifying the entire track to maintain the loudness level.
Its a pleasure listening to your teachings, new sub from kraazy South Afrika, did you see the new Audacity update yesterday? Can u please do a tutorial on the most useful features of the update....Otherwise keep it real and respekt...
Thank you so much Josh. Great vid as usual. Have you any videos on mixing saxophone? I'm battling to get things sorted when recording/mixing sax. Thanks again
It really just depends. Most of us need to use a little compression at least. It’s it’s already insanely equal I don’t believe so bit it also depends on what your RMS is reading as.
Hi Josh, greetings from CHIAPAS MEXICO. I have a question about the sweet recipe and the addition of compressor, so, could we say that this is the order of the sweet recipe or where should be the compressor's place? 1 Noise Reduction 2 Noise Gate 3 Loudness Normalization 4 EQ 5 Compressor? 6 Limiter and run ACX? Thanks in advance for your time and effort with the videos, they are really well explained and pretty deep but on a simple understandable way, even for me as a non native English speaker. Greetings again.
Hi, I wandering if there is any way to do the translation on audio file and record it? Technically I know it is, but I was trying to do it and it's not working. In some points when you translating you need to stopto think of a correct words and restart again. I hope you got some ideas and I'm sure it will be useful for many people.. Appreciate your job what you do, I learned allot from your videos.
Thanks for the great tutorials! Just to clarify - are we trying to get rid of the dynamic change? For a vocalist, we often want those dynamic changes. How/why do we do compression in those situations? Thanks Josh!
This is really handy video, however, the pencil tool example should not have been a plosive, those are best handled with a multi-band compressor (applied to a small selection) set to just reduce the low end. The pencil is used for join two waveforms that don't meet at zero when pasted in or fixing pops and clicks in a waveform where you can't mute because there is other content that needs to remain. Drawing out a glitch artfully would allow you to remove unwanted click or pop and make it unnoticeable. You can really "deep fake" an edit with that pencil but it takes practice.
Hey , for right now I just began getting my equipment.. as of right now all I have is my computer , daw(audacity), 2 cheap okay microphones but no audio interface yet , and earbuds .. do I need more cables or an interface just for my computer to pick up either one of my microphones to record because as of right now I think it only has been picking up recording’s offf my computer instead picking up vocals from me plugging in my cord microphones..
Regarding the Ratio - What would be a good rule of thumb or at least a school of thought when making considerations between voice acting/dialogue vs. podcast/voiceover. Would I be right to conclude that the latter would benefit from a higher ratio whereas a lower ratio would benefit an acting performance because it retains more energy/dynamics? Many Thsnkf ro your channel and your knowledge. All The Best
Say you're narrating an audiobook where you do the voices for female and male characters. Different characters have different pitches and different ways of speaking. You want to keep them different. Should you avoid compression?
It was really nice tutorial very good teaching techniques, thanks. Sir I’m facing problems with the time shifting tools it’s not appear on the latest Audacity would please let me know how to get back time shifting tools, I will really appreciate if you can solve this issue, thanks

So here’s a question: My VO Coach just directed me on my commercial demo. She had me do it in one long track, but asked me to separate into individual wav files to send to her 😱 So..HELP? Gulp.
In a talk between two speakers , one is speaking in low volume and the other one in high volume ; how can i auto - select all audio on the person with low volume based on audio level ?
Hi Josh I have been learning a lot from your videos, I have a question maybe you can help me with, I have a Blue Yeti and I use it to record my voice and not any music, when using it with Audacity should my PROJECT SAMPLE RATE be 44100 or 48000hz? Great content as usual, Josh.
Can you also maybe do a video concentrating on reverb and echo effects? Thanks!!
Thanks Kaivan! I certainly consider it and out on the list 🤙
Thank you for this video, man! Really help me here
Thank you, this makes so much sense!
BOOM!!! Damn dude that was dope. VERY well explained. I learned something today thanks to the VoiceOverMaster.

Why do TV shows not understand this? They start and people are talking a whisper so you turn the volume up then a song kicks in AND IT'S LOUD AS FUCK.

would you compress a whole 1h long interview for a podcast or would you do only one one part? I get both opinions on this... so let's ask the Pro ;-)
good stuff. thanks😎
Thanks for the great tutorials! Just to clarify - are we trying to get rid of the dynamic change? For a vocalist, we often want those dynamic changes. How/why do we do compression in those situations? Thanks Josh!
You want the dynamics as a vocalist but we don’t want the quiet parts to be soo quiet it’s hard to hear them over the music. 🤙
@@VoiceOverMaster So only use a light amount of compression then?
@@hollyt15 exactly. It’s about a healthy balance 😊🤙

I have an OLD Audacity 2.2. What should I UPGRADE to, so I can successfully download use ACX Check?

I think the mic quality also effects the compressor
I am big fan thanks brother

It should 🤙
