  • In this episode, we cover some of the basics of early-game farming, including a discussion on different soil types available to us in the Stone Age and how to irrigate and care for your crops.
    But the rust-red clouds of a temporal storm soon appear on the horizon, and before we know it, we're thrust into our first temporal storm!
    I'd like to take a moment to give a special thanks and shout-out to Nemonaemo (channel: / nemonaemo ) for mentioning my name and this guide over on his channel. If you like Vintage Story content (and lots of other content!), check out his RUclips channel and look for him on Twitch!

    There is also barren soil, which is even worse than low-fertility. It only offers 10% nutrients. You'll generally find it in hot, arid areas near the equator. However, with that mod you have, you might also get one if you used low fertility soil to grow crops and then tried to dig it up while it was below maximum nutrients. Not that I think you'll ever end up in that situation... =P
    So in total there are five soil tiers: barren, low fertility, medium fertility, compost, and terra preta.

    • @Kurazarrh
      @Kurazarrh  2 года назад +3

      You know, I completely forgot about barren soil! I've actually never seen it even though I have a southerly manse on a public server. Maybe I'll cover that in a future episode, though by the time we get it, I expect it won't even be relevant. The compost soil type I mentioned but didn't get into, since we have no way of creating it at the moment.

    This game is so complex, and your videos are showing me so many things and details I overlooked or couldn't even imagine.
    Please keep up the great work, it's the best guide out there, and also very entertaining. I can't watch it all at once, but I will watch all of them.

      Thank you for such a glowing review!
      It certainly is a complex game with many systems and subsystems that work together in different ways. It helps to take it slow the first time, build some muscle memory for the game, and then next time you play, you can bootstrap yourself a lot more easily and in far less time.

    I love how hard you avoid saying M*necraft. I got this game a couple of years ago but it was a bit rough then so I've been putting off playing it. It's looking very good now! Seems very clearly inspired by Terrafirmacraft, one of my favourite M*necraft mods.

      I don't know what you're on about. I'm just talking about That Other Block Game over here. Innocently, of course...
      ;P
      Actually, the lead developer of Vintage Story worked on Terrafirmacraft back in the day, and started Vintage Story because he found modding to be too limiting, IIRC. Among other reasons, like updates breaking mods.

    As far as I understand it, during the more severe temporal storms drifters can spawn in midair, so I think the "stuff on the floor" spawn proofing is not guaranteed to work if the room is more than 2 blocks high. Personally I find the storms very annoying, I'm glad the game has options to sleep through them, or even turn them off completely....

    • @Kurazarrh
      @Kurazarrh  2 года назад

      I'll keep an eye out, but I haven't had any drifters spawn in the air yet. I have seen them occasionally spawn in a 1-block high area and then get shunted into a space containing a rock/other debris, but I'm not sure if that's a feature or a bug.

    • @Kurazarrh
      @Kurazarrh  2 года назад

      @@tamagoO3O I'm not him, but the command is: /worldconfig temporalStorms off
      This doesn't turn off rifts or mess around with temporal stability, though. There are other commands related to that which can be found here: wiki.vintagestory.at/index.php?title=World_Configuration

    The one time I found a traderless wagon, I took shelter in the wagon overnight and the trader mysteriously appeared after a few hours. I think it must be a glitch with how they spawn.

    • @Kurazarrh
      @Kurazarrh  2 года назад +2

      Sometimes they'll spawn in a glitched location; other times they may never spawn. They also can spawn with their cart partially deleted; usually cut in half.

    Not a fan of the game-y "feature" of placing partial blocks that in world look exactly the same as regular blocks but magically prevent enemies from spawning. I really like what better than wolves, a mod for a different block game did with the spawning mechanics. Mobs will apear in any block, whether it is a full block or a partial one. But they will only spawn on dirt or stone based bloks, so you can prevent spawns in an area by replacing the floor with wood, either logs or planks. Much more consistent than the whole full block/half block thing.

    • @Kurazarrh
      @Kurazarrh  2 года назад +1

      If I had to guess, I'd say that the current spawn mechanics aren't going to be around forever. Especially given that the engine obviously CAN handle spawning on other blocks via mods, I wouldn't be surprised if the base spawn mechanics change dramatically in the future! (And really, they should).

    Come on, finding copper pickaxes and terra preta 'accidentally'...bogus. Admit it, you've set this up! ...lol, just kidding. Holy smokes man, I've to chime in along the other YT denizens - is the rest of this playlist as good as these first few episodes? You've got a good mike setup, your commentary is very calm and pleasant and your editing makes the experience all the more enjoyable. Hmm, I wonder, was there maybe another very good content creator you took some ideas from? What was his name...Schnitzelmiffs, no...Rixelpuff...no...ah, I can't seem to remember. But who cares? I have a huge problem with people doing what you are doing. Making a Let's Play series, and calling it a "Guide". You poison the SEO and you have to know what you are doing because the ONLY reason you do this is to get your Let's Play in front of people who search for "Guide" videos. You don't even put time stamps. This video is 32 minutes long and it's Episode 5, like WHO is going to watch 2.5 hours of You playing a Game in order to learn anything? From your "GUIDE" " " " " airquotes abound. You are probably an ok guy and your series is probably alright just call it what it is man! A Let's Play! ... What's wrong with that?!?!

      Well atleast kurazarhh
      Tells the viewers what he is doing like seriously man
      He didn't use the copper pickaxe because he wants this walkthrough to be progressive not a skipping one
      I kinda envy him for having that luck in vintage story but meh
      The other guides aren't fun as this guy's videos, And kurazarhh tells us what he does and not just saying "Guys this would be really important later" or "This is some good stuff guys" instead Kurazarhh says things like "This reed is good for bags for the early game" and this Episode is about farms and the first temporal storm
      The way Kurazarhh does the videos feels soothing reminds me of a certain afro haired painter
      And there is just this feeling when watching a one series of a game you don't know in a channel that is not so popular
