It doesn’t matter who did what. The fame is purely circumstantial. It’s not balto or his musher that declared themselves the heroes. Togo is a hero, balto is hero, and so are the other dogs and there mushers. Fame and praise doesn’t matter to heroes.
The man who owned Balto was pissed because he didn’t get all the credit. He was pissed off that a dog he thought was awful was getting attention. Balto did his job for the human he loved. The other guy would have completely missed the serum because he was a pompous ass. Togo deserves some credit sure but his owner was clearly a greedy monster.
@@alibentz8692 I wouldn't call him a monster. I say he was a man obsessed on creating/realizing a story. The man clearly loved huskies and had his vision of how he wanted them seen and represented. He felt Togo best exemplified the virtues of the breed. And he wanted Togo to be the poster boy of the serum run and his breed. He felt his story got screwed over when the media latched onto Balto--a dog he considered mediocre, and felt he stole attention away from Togo.
What an amazing story, truly amazing! But however I think it's a great pity that the humans involved allowed their pride to get in the way of the real reason for this heroic act of kindness and compassion!
The dog Balto relieved did the hardest part . I can't remember his name but he took the lake side trail at night, leading his team through a night so dark his musher couldn't see. All the dogs need to be honored.
Wow... This reminded me of a childhood film I had almost completely forgotten about. Cheers, Simon, though this tale is certainly more shocking! Please do Wat Tyler next!
15:35 How sure are you about Seppala trying to erase balto from history? You just make him look like a villain. There's nothing wrong in wanting recognition for his dog that gave him eveything. Give the man some dignity he's a hero
There is a few things here I feel seem to attempt to paint Leonhard Seppala in a bad light. Talking about his 'need for speed'; according to the story Henry Ivanoff had run into reindeer, and had gotten tangled up. There was no reason for Seppala to stop and help, there was no emergency of any kind. Seppala also believed he still had 100 miles to go to reach the meeting point with a storm brewing. Originally he was to do the 170 mile run alone, and he did not know Ivanoff was sent with it, but when he met him he took it over and did the 91 mile run (plus the way he had already come totaling 261 miles, more than twice that of ANY other of the mushers and in the most dangerous part). The reason Kaasen wasn't aware of the 'order' to wait until the storm had lifted, was because he missed one of the stops that had the telegram. And that was very close to being a complete disaster, as his sleigh flipped in the blizzard and ejected the serum. Luckily none of them broke, and he managed to find it. As for being jealous of the credit, from the quotes I've read from Seppala it seems he wasn't jealous because he didn't get credit, but because Balto got all the credit when he felt Togo really deserved it. Considering the distance they covered; 261 miles of the most dangerous part of the journey compared to 51 miles of the easiest (albeit in a blizzard, though so did Seppala) it really feels like he had a point. EDIT: Not to say that Balto wasn't a good dog, or didn't do well. He wasn't the perfect sled dog that Togo was, but he performed really well. It is just that Togo's achievement in that run blows Balto out of the water. And as for Seppala selling Balto, I can't really find any evidence suggesting Seppala sold the dog. The closest information I could find was that Balto was sold by the company that sponsored Gunnar Kaasens tour of the US with Balto, not Seppala. Also find suggestions that Kaasen sold Balto, but very little suggesting that Seppala was the one that sold Balto.
I absolutely love this biography. Me and my daughter still talk about it today and she is 22. Austitic but she can talk in length about this amazing dog and man. Thank you for this video. Her and I so enjoyed it.
Truly dogs are man’s best friend. Last year hear in Florida an adopted dog that has been abused and abandoned took off running and barking they followed the dog across the field and down a ditch to find a little girl who was like the dog abused and abandoned
The Disney plus movie still didn't get everything right, for example, Seppala probably wouldn't have needed any extra convincing to go on the run as he had a daughter the same age as the other children at risk for diphtheria. But it did shine light on Togo and the other dogs contributions! And it starred one of Togo's actual descendants!
All dogs used in that run are heroes! Balto was lucky to be in Gunnar's team - he was picked by the media of the time and became so famous due to that. Togo was by far the superior lead dog of his days and he was 12 at the time he lead Seppala's team in the most demanding and dangerous lap of the race. Togo never got the credit he so deserved.
Bruno Gomes Just remember that Balto leaded twice as Road as he was supposed to, also he was in the middle of the road when they were hit buy the storm and he leaded the team basically blinded by snow . Balto deserved every inch of fame, but i Agree that Togo didn't got enough credit. Togo's story by itself its amazing. He forgot to mention that Togo was rejected by Sappala because he was too weak he gave it away to a family but togo scaped by jumping out of a window and came back to Sappala sincen then he became his favorite dog. I just wish that both Dogs were equally recognized.
@@keiwolfen It seems Disney will bring Togo's story to the big screen in the upcoming movie "Togo: The untold true story" with Willem Dafoe portraying Seppala. Every single dog used in that run deserves the 'hero' status.
Togo was the real hero of the story..... Balto ran 55 miles. Togo ran over 261 miles through the most dangerous terrain. Balto wasn't even good enough to be on seppala's team. Such a shame that Balto got all the credit just bc he happened to be the last team on the journey. At least Togo got the movie so everyone knows how amazing he was. 💓❤️❤️❤️
I love Balto I see him from time to time in Cleveland. I think Togo must have been legit too. All the Huskies were winners. Pretty petty guy to be jealous of the fame of the dog. The most important thing is the kids and people sick were saved. Hope people can learn not to be petty and appreciate more with or without credit.
Some of the info in the video seems to be angled in a certain way. What I can find in regards to Seppala, it seems he didn't feel like he should have the fame, but that his dog Togo deserved it. And he certainly had a point. Togo ran over double the distance of any other team, and in the most dangerous parts of the journey. Mushers today consider Togo and Seppala as the true heroes of the story. And I can understand Seppala feeling bad for his dog, when instead all of the glory is handed over to someone doing the easiest part of the run. You can really tell the angle of the story in this video, when he talks about how Seppalas need for speed almost ruined the whole thing. When the actual story reads that Henry Ivanoffs dogs got tangled up because they had run into some reindeer. There was no need to stop, Seppala believed he still had 100 miles to go and he needed to hurry because of the incoming storm. He didn't know that the serum had gotten as far as it did. So when Ivanoff called and said he had the serum, he stopped and took it through the furthest and most dangerous part of the journey.
Seppala was a father driven mad at the thought of losing his child when he set out. When he came back he was more jealous than grateful. Not just of Balto but Gunnar. If it was him in the newspapers and celebrity photoshoots and the central park unraveling, he could've sold a dog to every child in America. He was a bussinesman that missed out an opportunity while Gunnar did nothing with it and didn't even make enough money to buy the borrowed dog that saved his own life. Plus he got absolutely lost after handing off the serum anyway and got back to Nome two days after Gunnar@@Fung15

It wasn’t Balto, it was Togo. But Balto deserves some credit, he ran about 64 miles while Togo ran about 250 miles.
They’re both heroes
"And we know this for sure about Balto, he was a very good boy, indeed." Aww Simone, YOU'RE a good boy, too!
The dog Balto relieved did the hardest part . I can't remember his name but he took the lake side trail at night, leading his team through a night so dark his musher couldn't see. All the dogs need to be honored.
It was actually mostly Togo, but still amazing what they did.
Watching from Alaska, I grew up with the story of Balto. I'm so happy you covered Him, He deserves it so much
I feel like the caption of this video should have been “Balto: the Goodest boi”
Wow... This reminded me of a childhood film I had almost completely forgotten about. Cheers, Simon, though this tale is certainly more shocking!
Please do Wat Tyler next!
Ah, old wat, went to london and chopped off the heads of government... could do with him now lol
@@LeadsTheFallen The Father of English Radicalism. 😎
You didn't by any chance watch a Tony Robinson documentary with him in did you?
@@darthsawlex8257 I did lol
@@darthsawlex8257 I'm afraid I have not.
You know you're gonna need a Togo biography vid
I've never been so moved by a RUclips video. Thank you Simon, for such a wonderful presentation of mans best friend.
Dogs are the best thing on this earth
Legit this whole video i wanted to cry.. dogs are such a soft spot
Death: Its your time Balto
Balto: Was I a good boy
Death: No... You were the best boy
Balto AND Togo deserve ALL the fame!!!
15:35 How sure are you about Seppala trying to erase balto from history? You just make him look like a villain. There's nothing wrong in wanting recognition for his dog that gave him eveything. Give the man some dignity he's a hero
Yeah it wasn't fair for him and togo balto and gunnar took all the credit while putting in the least work compared to togo and seppala
Xenaric 2303 Gunnar and Balto didn’t “take” anything, the media gave them the glory.
@@samuricexful and he could've told the media it was seppala that did most of the work not him but he didn't
@@samuricexful but you're right the media gave them the glory
Like much else in this video it's not true...
Balto was the bestest boy. RIP to one of the good boys.
The airplane goes if it can.
The dog goes even if he can't.
Hats off to the dog.
The whole world needs a Balto right now.
After April 1st I dont trust a single word out of this mans mouth!
And now I'm wiping tears from my eyes thanks Simon 😭😭😭
I think the spotlight is large enough for two good boys
Balto was a Hero! I never heard this story before, thank You for sharing with me. I’m a dog lover
Also find suggestions that Kaasen sold Balto, but very little suggesting that Seppala was the one that sold Balto.
this is the only time a biographics video has made me tear up. Animals really make you feel something special.
Balto is such a beautiful looking dog
Simon, you and your team hit it right out of the park with this story! Not all heroes are human... Heartfelt thanks.
Simon you bastard im crying.
Fun fact; I am named after one of Balto's pups (Kodiak) from the animated movie series
Came here after watching several if your more sad videos to up my spirits. Wasn't disappointed.
Would love to see a video on Laika the Soviet space canine that was lost in space... on purpose.
Great video!!! Thank You!! Always loved the story of Balto!!❤❤❤
very sad story i absolutely love dogs they deserve more recognition...if you treat them the way your are meant to they will b your bestfriend
Actually Togo did most of the work. Watch the movie on Disney plus.
I did, it's meh.
Dogs make us better people. God Bless all the amazing dogs of the world.
"A very good boi." The only thing that can make my eyes twinge
Please make more videos about the Wild West I can't get enough of those!
All dogs were great but Togo was real beast 🔥
That's a good doggo. Also I legit teared up during this video lol
What a brilliant documentary. Thank you. The famous huskie with the white socks. RIP Balto ,Togo and all the other heroic dogs that took part
He was a very good boy! Another great video from biographics even if did make me cry.😭😭😭
This is the only one from Biographics presented by Simon to make me cry! I really enjoyed this :-)
I loved the animated movie as a child, and this brought back some great memories. Also incredible to hear the whole story. Cried a bit. Humans can be so great and so awful, but a dog just does dog things. I would love to go see the statue in NY.
This is a great channel, and this is my favorite episode!!! Thanks Biographics!!!!
