Balto was actually named after Samuel Balto, an explorer who among other things was part of the team that first explored the interior of Greenland on skis. He lived in Alaska for some time and transported goods from Nome to mining workers in the Yukon river valley, which is probably why a dog from Nome ended up being named after him.
