I took the Google Data analytics certificate, and i landed my first job in to tech 3 weeks later after completion , and without having any previous experience in the field I completed the course in 3 months, though the course is not complete, i think is definitely a Nice way to start. Thanks
Glad someone is honest about these certs. I've seen WAY too many Tubers bragging about "I got the job with this simple cert!" and it sounds too good to be true. I'm on disability so I needed something to learn. Thanks for your brutal honesty because a lot of people really need it during these times.
Finally a review from someone who actually experienced both these courses. I saw many people simply sharing feedback based on details from their web desriptions. Thanks a lot for your honest review 👍
Finally a refreshing review. I have watched dozens of videos and many RUclipsrs want to sugar coat everything to gain an audience. The certificates are good, but lack a lot of rigor and depth. They are just a stepping off point for more learning . I still have not found one program that is comprehensive and current. You probably need to take several different courses , and get a lot of practice, before becoming competent. I am just starting that journey now. I will say though, the IBM course seems more content-worthy than the Google one since it covers Python, SQL and databases more. Google covers some R and some tableau but nothing really deep.
Update. Although ibm seems to cover more material, I didn’t like it . Very confusing for a beginner. I think this was just some internal course they decided to put on Coursera. I went to Datacamp and Dataquest. Much better.
I am currently working through the IBM certification. I have to say, this is the first time I have ever taken a "course" to teach a programming language that does not actually have you write any real programs. The IBM approach to teaching Python is basically to tell you about a concept and to show you 1 or 2 examples but they do not say ok now here is a sample problem, write a solution in Python that solves this. Which to me is the only way to learn something technical such as programming. Also, the instruction itself is very average at best. There are many examples of other RUclips videos from other creators who explain and teach concepts such as Python programming which do a much better job of clearing up the concept for the student. I almost wish that IBM and Google would set it up to say, we offer this certification. In order to get it, you must take this test. The test will cover concepts such as IBM Cognos, Excel, Python, SQL etc and then from there leave it up to the student to go out and find classes and methods to learn these concepts before finally taking the test.
If you are looking for courses with more practical work, you could consider the courses offered by Udacity. They require you to do an end to end project (of course, with guidance) after each module and you will receive a review (which more often than not is really helpful). You will only get the certificate after successfully completing all the projects. The project are also not trivial. For example, the last one took me 10 days (about 5 h/day) to complete. The only downside is that Udacity is really expensive. I get the impression that Coursera is actually not that much different from Udemy in terms of practical course work and, hence, the worth of the certificates. Maybe, that impression is not correct but after doing days of research and comparisons I went for Udacity.
Thank you for being so detailed, I was trying to see which certificate I should take first and if I couldn't get any good reasons I was going to pick IBM because the company has been around longer in my eyes but you really help with the decision
this lady sounds very honest and giving an honest appraisal of the google data analytics certificate. There are so many videos that advertise the program I think I got taken. It really doesn't help getting a job. The coverage of the various tools like tableau, sql, excel is seriously inadequate. I wish this video was out years ago, or at least before I did the program a year ago.
Thank you for the review. This is the best review I have seen. I am already in the IT industry and thought about these but something felt off about them, especially the heavy marketing of Google Data analytics cert. I think these are an affordable for people who are already in the IT industry to pivot slowly into Data analysis and Data science (if they have the math behind it). It tacky to believe that these certs alone will get you the job. Especially now a days with the layoffs and competition from people wanting to get into something to work from home. These certifications are a supplementary addition at best.
you saved a lot of people from being scammed..setting realistic expectations about what anyone gonna learn and what skill set they really gonna have is so valuable..data science and analysis is not a joke field..strong background in calculus, linear algebra, probability and stats is required..python, r, sql are required too..but as a tools that make the job easier, they're not the core knowledge required for data analysis per se I guess..thanks a lot once again
Hi! Thanks for the video. Could you please share a link to your github? I just want to get some inspiration on how you have made a portfolio showcasing your work in the course. You mentioned you made some PDFs and Jupyter notebooks regarding the course assignments. Thanks!
I don’t have a favorite platform. Everyone learns a little differently so i don’t want to assume you learn best in one way or the other. I think the most important thing to do is evaluate why you want to study x. Then look at your timeline for when you want to complete x by. Then create your curriculum that best fits your why and when. I personally break up the learning into small chunks. So i learn about a topic in depth for free on RUclips then i try practicing what i learned. Once i feel i am satisfied i move onto another topic.
Thank you for your honest opinion on both of the courses. Quick questions, do you think it could/would be easier to get a Data Analyst job if I have "Tech job" experience? I have 10 yrs experience in Managed File Transfer, dealing with SFTP, HTTPS transfer software. I want to change the path of my career and that's why I'm looking into these certificates. 2nd question, how many hours did you spend a week to finish the IBM certificate? Thank you in advance.
Hey there, i think it’s possible for you to transfer into the tech space as your job sounded technical. Think beyond just the tools you used. More importantly do you have problem solving skills, curiosity, and internal motivation to keep learning? Transferable skills are key. It took me about 3-4 months (Dec to March) to complete the whole IBM certificate. I don’t remember the weekly dedication.
@@clairekraft4892 Awesome, thank you for your quick response! I'm planning to spend 8 hrs a day for at least a month on one of these certifications. Thank you for your responses!!
I've been interested in data analysis for a while and I've been searching for the best cert to start with which led me to start with the IBM cert. Most of the videos I've watched were pushing the Google cert based on the total hours and no one and as you said, they're overselling what to expect. It was an amazing 29 minutes video of honest feedback.
As someone who is taking a Google Data Analytics Certificate, I suspected this was the case. Some themes are gone through really fast and they lack depth. If I was looking for a data analyst certainly I wouldn't give too much weight to these certificates. I have started to look to into other resources to learn more deeply the core skills (Excel and SQL). I'm looking into Kaggle at the moment. Claire any thoughts about Kaggle's certificates?
Hey Damian, i think it’s great you’re taking the initiative to find other resources for more depth. I, personally, have no opinions on Kaggle certificates because i’ve no experience with their certificates. I do enjoy using their datasets for EDAs.
I chose the Google one cause I'm doing it for 100% free through The American Dream Academy program. People can also audit the course for free and apply for financial aid which will give you it for free. So, I don't agree that it's predatory. It really just takes a person to be thorough to find these benefits. I'm also the type to be independent. I don't need positive affirmation or feedback when I complete something and I don't really care for grading other's work. I graduated university and I never want to go through that setting again, so bring on the self-study haha. I also need to say that influencers will always lie for money, but that's not Googles fault. People with critical thinking skills should know that a cert will not give them a job and a majority of people who do the research know that it's not going to immediately give them a job.
Would getting an advanced degree (like say a masters in analytics) be more worth it in terms of learning the topics covered in the certificates more in depth?
If you want to be a Data Scientist, yes. As a data analyst, no. A portfolio showcasing skills helps the most. Demonstrating skills in excel, sql, python, and “Easy to understand” visualizations.

Congrats! I'm on course 7 now.

It would be alright if they weren't preying on vulnerable people
Everyone considering these certs should watch this video. It is excellent, much better than others.
Finally a review from someone who actually experienced both these courses. I saw many people simply sharing feedback based on details from their web desriptions. Thanks a lot for your honest review 👍
Glad you liked the authentic review. Thanks for watching.
Yeah most people just read from the website and add small comments. No much real analysis of the courses or programs.
Yeah those videos are like videos about "Top 10" exercise equipments where the "reviewers" just showed commercials of the equipments.
I feel like doing both will give you a wide range of skills and a good start into Data Analytics
This is like the most honest review I've seen regarding these two certs. Thanks, Claire Kraft.

I think if a certificate increases my chance of landing an interview, it already serves its purpose.

Data science is not the same job geared towards data analysts. The Google cert is for beginning data analysts.
Thanks for honest review

I'm almost done with Google data analytic. Is there a class I can take just for Python? Or is it not worth taking a class for Python?
you've repeated yourself could you re-word it ?
IBM certifications are more technical goes more into depth on topics. Google has a more marketable name.
Thank you

What about datacamp certificate???
I don’t have an opinion on datacamp certificate as i’ve never used it.
if you finish in one month you pay only 39. if you spend 6 months you ended paying 236, right?
Right. I finished my Project Management Certification in 2 months and canceled the subscription.
What was the thing that landed you the job?
It wasn’t just one thing. It was timing, location, networking, portfolio building, and self learning.
What's next after the ibm cert?
Up to you
Can we take both course together and learn?
You could but to maximize performance maybe do one at a time.
@@clairekraft4892 which one to take first?
Up to you. :) Happy learning!
