Why is there a large format and a small format? What are the pros and cons of each? I understand that the pins of small format are a smaller diameter than standard pins. Are large format pins different from standard pins?
@@miketripp2168 The reason for large format cylinders is to accommodate standard size keys. Whether they're Corbin Russwin or Schlage or any other manufacturer, just because of the size of the key they need to be a larger format. When Best came out with their small format interchangeable core, they were meeting the need of government and also a design that made it unique to be able to be patented. So between manufacturers they made uniquenesses to their large format so you have to buy their product to make it work. For the most part, with some exceptions, small format are mostly all the same. Best patents have expired long ago so you have aftermarket like Falcon, Arrow and other manufacturers that make cores that work in small format cylinders. Best original products are pretty expensive and the aftermarket can save you a lot of money. And also within that Arrow, Falcon, and Kaba have their own key restrictions designs that have patents. This is to restrict key duplication and makes it that only institutions or locksmiths can duplicate the key.

Right now I don't have time to do a video, but I would imagine there are videos of locksmiths pinning large format cores.
