The last bit about applause was actually written by and suggested to Mel and his father by a then still school aged Rob Reiner. They were smart enough to listen to and notice the kid's budding comedy writing skills even back then.

Story goes that they started this routine at parties and George Burns told them that if they didn't record it he'd record it, so they made the album and had a hit.
I still have the vinyl album.
