    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
    Moses (Charlton Heston) is arrested and brought before Sethi (Cedric Hardwicke). Moses claims he is not the deliverer, but would free the slaves if he could.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
    Based on the Holy Scriptures, with additional dialogue by several other hands, The Ten Commandments was the last film directed by Cecil B. DeMille. The story relates the life of Moses, from the time he was discovered in the bullrushes as an infant by the pharoah's daughter, to his long, hard struggle to free the Hebrews from their slavery at the hands of the Egyptians. Moses (Charlton Heston) starts out "in solid" as Pharoah's adopted son (and a whiz at designing pyramids, dispensing such construction-site advice as "Blood makes poor mortar"), but when he discovers his true Hebrew heritage, he attempts to make life easier for his people. Banished by his jealous half-brother Rameses (Yul Brynner), Moses returns fully bearded to Pharoah's court, warning that he's had a message from God and that the Egyptians had better free the Hebrews post-haste if they know what's good for them. Only after the Deadly Plagues have decimated Egypt does Rameses give in. As the Hebrews reach the Red Sea, they discover that Rameses has gone back on his word and plans to have them all killed. But Moses rescues his people with a little Divine legerdemain by parting the Seas. Later, Moses is again confronted by God on Mt. Sinai, who delivers unto him the Ten Commandments. Meanwhile, the Hebrews, led by the duplicitous Dathan (Edward G. Robinson), are forgetting their religion and behaving like libertines. "Where's your Moses now?" brays Dathan in the manner of a Lower East Side gangster. He soon finds out. DeMille's The Ten Commandments may not be the most subtle and sophisticated entertainment ever concocted, but it tells its story with a clarity and vitality that few Biblical scholars have ever been able to duplicate. It is very likely the most eventful 219 minutes ever recorded to film--and who's to say that Nefertiri (Anne Baxter) didn't make speeches like, "Oh, Moses, Moses, you splendid, stubborn, adorable fool"?

Just pay attention to the social conditions that he addresses, you might find some similarities to what's happening here in America. I believe that was the point the director, Cecil B. DeMille was trying to make, seeing that this film was released in 1956 during the beginning of the Civil Rights Movement while the Montgomery Bus Boycott was taking place. If you pay attention to the news, you may notice that we still have racial problems today.

    I absolutely loved this movie for showing sympathetic Egyptians. Seti genuinely loved Moses, and showed contempt for the vindictive Ramses. He was prepared to appoint Moses Pharaoh over his natural son because we saw how hard Moses worked, how he treated slaves like human beings, and did it all for his admiration of his father and for the glory of Egypt.
    "No son could have more love for you than I." Seti is completely crushed to have to banish Moses. His position condoning slavery to advance Egypt is of course wrong, but that doesn't make him any less heartbroken to lose the heir whom both the Egyptians and Hebrews grew to adore, the people's prince. I often wondered whether Moses, after he fully accepted his role as God's prophet, looked back on Bithiah and Seti fondly and remembered that as the only earthly parents to raise him, they taught him how to be a good man with a kind heart for all people, even slaves.
    You don't see this representation in many other adaptations, where all of the Egyptians except for Pharaoh's daughter are painted as one-dimensional tyrannical cutouts. DeMille did an amazing job showing Egyptians with both admirable and unadmirable qualities in this film, and Hebrews as well, with Dathan.

    • @crucisnh
      @crucisnh 6 лет назад +19

      I don't know that Seti cared about the slaves being treated like human beings. He might have appreciated that Moses was able to find a way to get the slaves to be more efficient workers, even if the cost was some temple grain and so forth. Also, Seti isn't portrayed as a total tyrant, except for defending the institution of slavery. Other than that rather large flaw, he was portrayed as an otherwise wise and decent monarch. And you're correct that most other Egyptians were portrayed as fairly decent people, except perhaps for Rameses. And even he was probably a victim of his own jealousy of Moses, though I rather doubt that he's have been as wise as "prince" Moses.
      Dathan was without a doubt the sleaziest character in the film, though I think that he was meant to be that way to fill a role in the overall story. Frankly, his sleaziness was semi understandable prior to the Hebrews leaving Egypt. But afterwards, it just started to get annoying because he was constantly trying to get the people to turn their back on Moses even in the face of a number of miracles that everyone witnessed first hand. At what point should a more realistic character say to himself "Maybe I was wrong, and maybe I should just shut up now."

    • @luciuscorneliussulla5182
      @luciuscorneliussulla5182 6 лет назад +4

      It should be noted Moses was COMPELLED to be a prophet. Or, to put it another way, recruited against his own will. He didn't have a choice.

    • @AtenRa
      @AtenRa 6 лет назад +6

      I didn't say that Seti himself is a tyrant, I said that in most _other_ adaptations, the Pharaoh and other Egyptians are. To uplift the Hebrews, Egypt is often painted as a country of cruel-hearted monsters who enjoy spending time finding new ways to abuse people. Ramses is certainly like that, but Seti isn't. DeMille forces us to step back and think, if Moses was raised by monster tyrants as most stories have portrayed them, why is his father so moved by his loving deeds? It's far too dismissive of Seti's character to say "Yeah, you're a sweet father and all, but you still condone slaves." I mean, Prince Moses had no intention of abolishing slavery, just making sure they were healthier. Shouldn't we write him off at the time as any other Egyptian then? From that angle, all he did was toss the Hebrews a bone to chew on and become more loyal to his purpose. Ramses, on the other hand, cared nothing if a slave or two got mowed down by his chariot.
      DeMille's TC doesn't let Moses and Seti be so simple. The Egyptians' personalities are nuanced, not cutouts. Plenty of historical figures have been admired for their character, even as they owned slaves in a time when it was commonplace. As a movie character, Seti feels love, and pain and loss of a son that other versions would gloss over to make the Egyptians monstrous.

    • @AtenRa
      @AtenRa 6 лет назад +12

      All the more reason to sympathize with Seti, in my opinion. In the early years, Seti snapped at the priests and people who tried to compel him to choose Ramses, insisting on letting him judge his own sons. He gave Ramses and Moses all the breaks and chances to let their actions speak for themselves. Seti wasn't even swayed by Nefertiri, who never hid her preference for Moses. He was fair, and just. Because of this, his banishing Moses is equally compelled, becauses Moses simply refused to turn back from where he was compelled. Seti was forced to follow the law and give Nefertiri and Egypt to Ramses. Moses' refusal deprived Seti of his free choice, and in return he was forced to justly disown him, or be labelled a hypocrite. That would be devastating to a king, and to a father.

      Just because you’re an angelic leader with a love of the people doesn’t mean that the people in your court feel the same. Moses freeing the Hebrews would’ve likely scared and angered many other powerful people in Egypt. A rival to Moses could gained the support of the other nobles and priests and the soldiers and then removed Moses from power. Bigger army diplomacy will always win, no matter what time period it is.

    TTC is a 1956 film and Heston was the star. The amazing thing is that in 1958 Heston took a supporting role in 'The Big Country.'

    • @kevinwrynn2659

      He took the supporting role in The Bug Country because his agent told him that Willim Wyler, who directed The Big Country, was going to direct Ben Hur the following year. Heston felt this movie would make a wonderful audition for Judah Ben Hur part and show Wyler the depth of Heston's acting capabilities. The plan worked to a tee for Heston.

When the several actors’, who auditioned for the titular role of Judah Ben-Hur, failed their screen tests’, Wyler decided to change Mr Heston’s role to that leading one. The rest, as is said, is history…………with Charlton Heston winning Best Actor Oscar in 1960, for his wonderful portrayal…………

    This film is pretty accurate in the storyline, it really doesn't matter whether Moses was black nor white as long as we get the message if you don't understand the Bible's depiction. The movie will explain the parts you don't understand 😂

    • @annemurphy9339

      The Bible’s depiction is of Middle Eastern civilizations, who are Levantine caucasoids. Dynastic Egypt was created by tribe(s) from the Levant of the Near/Middle East who migrated down into North Africa. That is why modern Egyptians still consider themselves a Middle Eastern people even after thousands of years in Africa.

I guess when you stand before God and see that His Word is true you'll be convinced. What a shame though, that you'll have wait to see to believe! Why not believe now.

There exists a huge Egyptian block of limestone which is kept in the Egyptian Museum being the ONLY carving mentioning Israel leaving Egypt! Besides, what PROOF do you have that nothing in the Bible is real! I'm one who doesn't take chances, I believe in being prepared. So, what if everything in the Bible is true and one day you find yourself standing before GOD, what would you do then? It’s a great film, there is no denying that, but it took amazing liberties with the Biblical story. The Biblical Moses was never arrested, he left Egypt when he realized that his killing of an Egyptian was known (because a Hebrew slave was angry at him for stopping a fight and said « Do you intend to kill me like you killed the Egyptian? »
    I’d really like to see Hollywood just once make a Biblical film as stirring as this one but stick to the actual’Biblical text.

    "If there is a God, he did not mean this to be so." Powerful words!
    But let me ask this, if he didn't mean the suffering we see today, then why doesn't he do something about it?
    Every time you go to church, and that something bad has happened in some country, or someone love dies, or whatever the case may be, normally the Reverend will always say: "It's God's will."
    Well if it is "God's will", as indeed the preachers say, then what kind of God is that?
    The way the church talks about God, it convinces me of one of two things, either God is Not Almighty, or he would have done something about the suffering that faces mankind a long time ago, or he simply doesn't care about what happens to mankind.
    Well I personally refuse to believe that God doesn't care, nor that he is not Almighty, so with that being said that is why I have stepped away from the church.
    I think the church has lied, that it does not describe God the way that he truly is. But I still believe that there is a God, because how else do you explain all the marvelous things that exist? I refuse to believe they exist solely by chance.
    No, to me and intelligent designer came up with them, someone of vast intelligence, and power designed everything that we see today, including us as human beings.
    I do not believe that we were the products of chance, the products of Darwinian evolution, but rather that we were the products of creation, that we were made in the image of God.

      Its about attitude what you think and feel that makes you decide what to do . Good self less or evil selfish . That you are either good person or not . Boko Haram do not really do God's will - on Dos and Don'ts : steal covet neighbors possessions [ child ] and murder [ strapping a bomb to the child and blew up kill the child and everyone near the kid. ] as for forgiveness . did they knew about his commandments ? knew about his commandments yet they violated it and they say they did it for him - really ? either they are stupid or they think god is - if they think he is going to buy that line. On the forgiveness . we are at a time on retribution or last judgement - a sorting out : for God or against him . there is a hell and heaven as well as the abyss - that no. 2 death : souls get destroyed .

      Your view is like that of Rabbi Kushner who wrote "When Bad Things Happen to Good People". He concludes that God is not almighty. I think he is right. But here is how I think God does work and can change things: Christ said those who are welcomed into The Kingdom are those who helped "the least of these." Feed the hungry, clothe the naked, visit the sick and people in prison, and in the letter of James it says pure religion is when we help widows and orphans. And anyone who does so, helps Him. "I and the Father are one."
      "If God created us in His own image, (Genesis 2:27) then we are God. And when Man is at his most creative, loving, gentle and human, then he is most God-like." The late Harlan Ellison wrote these words in 1969 and I believe they are true. Fr. Mulcahy on MASH said God created us so he could be here himself. We each have to be God in everyday life.

    Sorry, this a very short comment. I have already written a complete ecplanation on this subject. If you want a copy, leave your email add here.
    For the mean time, this is what the scripture says,
    Romans 10:1-4
    1¶Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israelfn is that they may be saved.
    2For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge.
    3For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God.
    4For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes
