Hi all - thanks for watching! If you want to dig into the Apple Watch SE GPS/HR data a bit more, here's that set from the video: analyze.dcrainmaker.com/#/public/7f8e9cd6-5b92-4beb-6912-1875244a22a3
I watched the video about the series 6 as well so I get it when you say that the 6 did better on mario karting than the SE. But why didn’t you take the 6 on the comparison run for the SE??
Agreed! Most reviewers just read what is off of the website and so if Apple doesn’t report it they don’t either. Feels like reviewers have gotten lazy. Reviews like this are so nice to see! Glad someone actually takes the time to test the Watch and not just report on the published spec sheet.
Appreciate you taking the time to do this. For most users, this minor GPS issue is no issue at all. Unless you’re a proper athlete, the SE is a fantastic device at a great price point.
Blackpink_ Kakumei Rolexs are pretty much useless why would you pay 36k for a watch that only tells the time when you can buy an Apple Watch for 800 that is actually helpful
Was never interested in getting an Apple watch until the SE because of the apparent value for a cool smart watch. Thanks for saving me the money -- I will stick with my Fenix 6X pro.
This is the kind of review that tech reviewers should do but instead they just go through the specs as if the viewers are toddler. Love your review on the data accuracy! Keep it coming!!
Looking forward to the full review. It would be very interesting to see how the SE compares against a Series 5, specially heart rate and GPS accuracy. Given that a series 5 can now be had for very similar prices to the SE.
As someone who mainly purchased a Series 3 for fitness after my previous device died, thanks for delivering this kind of analysis for the SE. I was contemplating upgrading but this breakdown gave me gave me a reason to save my money for something else.
This was so helpful. I’ve been trying to decide between the SE and 6, since I don’t care about ecg, pulse ox, and even the U1 chip. I do care about GPS accuracy though.
3:19 FYI, they didn't add the reflective circle in later generations, that's the difference between the composite (plastic) back and the ceramic zirconia one, the steel rings reinforced the lenses. You can even read ceramic vs composite on the backs there.
Thanks for this great review. I’m looking to buy the new Apple Watch, but did not see too much of a difference between 6 and SE. Now I’m convinced to take the 6. I’m coming from the AW2, and doing trails. I think the 6 is more accurate, and it will be a big step up from my 2, certainly with altimeters. Great stuff! Thanks again!
Disclaimer: I purchased an SE. One of the main reasons was for the larger 44mm size and cellular. Maybe you mentioned that, but another thing to consider when comparing options against S3. Very good GPS accuracy analysis. Thank you.
So, a couple of things, Ray. First, it would be great if you could compare the SE and the 6 (not necessarily here on RUclips, but on your blog maybe) on the same run or ride, not really sure why you didn't do that. I would love to see a direct GPS (and HR for that matter) comparison to see the swooping vs what is going on with the Series 6 and see how much difference it really makes in distance and pace. Second, there are a number of other advantages to the SE over the Series 3 - 1) It has the bigger and brighter screen, 2) At least new, the Series 3 can't be bought with cellular, whereas the SE only costs $50 more for cellular vs the 6 which is $100 more, 3) The SE has loads more memory and I believe it has the same processor the 5 had, which is lots faster than the 3 (As an owner of a Series 3, with WatchOS 7 that is a big deal) 4) It has a better mic and speaker. Oh, and the compass could be a big deal if you are using the watch for directions, particularly when they have cycling directions in more places. If it wasn't for your disappointing results so far with the GPS and heart rate I'd say, at only $80 more than the Series 3 it is the one to buy. BTW, thanks for another great and timely review.
For what it is worth I don't think GPS or Heart Rate on the Series 3 is any better, its actually the Series 6 that seems to have made a jump with the accuracy in HR and GPS. Even GPS and the "mario karting" issue may be a bit overblown (not that Ray is saying otherwise) because it seems to mainly affect the look of the track on the map, NOT the overall distance on the older watches.
Really helpful. The lackluster gps is why I’ve avoided Apple watches. It sounds like the series 6 may actually be the first realistic option for me. Thanks!
sheeshhh! i was for sure am gonna get the see instead of the 6. nobody needs the ecg or the spo2, unless u're 50/60 years old and up. but I am going to use the watch for workouts & runs. dang. thanks btw. awesome detailed review.
I suspect that older apple watches capture GPS coordinates at a slower rate, so they ‘smooth’ the lines out to disguise the longer interval between points. Battery life is always a big deal, and Apple is known to sacrifice features (including slowing down the chip) to squeeze more minutes out of the tiny battery. The series 6 is rated for the same number of hours despite having a more efficient processor and a larger battery, so they must be using the extra juice to put back the corners they cut from the previous models.
Awesome, thank you for so clearly highlighting the differences between the 2 models on this first impressions. It does seem to confirm first thoughts when it comes to accuracy as it physically appears to be identical to the series 5. In my opinion a highly decision influencing first impressions review.
Maybe the Watch SE has lower GPS sample rate and that is why it cuts corners? Heart rate measurement has also a sample rate, integration period, algorithm which is different in every model.
Obligatory engagement comment. See youtube, I'm engaging with DC Rainmaker, his engagement is increasing because of this comment. Engagment comment over.
Great info / analysis!. About the GPS: when switching back from LG-G6 to iPhone-XR, the most obvious thing I noticed on Strava cycling-trip recordings was that I went from a rather 'wiggly-all-over-the-road' rides that were honestly reflecting GPS inaccuracy to 'pretty smooth-on-the-road' rides that were sometimes on the wrong road! I've ridden through golf courts cutting corners, rode on different sides of a canal... also rides were consistently shorter (not weird, but looking at the rounding / averaging maybe a bit over the top ...) BUT all of that did not happen, it was Apple GPS 'intelligence' rounding off corners and even projecting my track onto the nearest 'real' track on the other side of the canal ...I'm a bit of an Apple fanboy, so that was a bit of a disappointment ☺️
Excellent well made video. I love the SE for walking and Apple Fitness+ workouts, even more so with Watch OS 8. I’m happy to forgive it for cutting a few GPS corners! But as you indicate, there are plenty of better devices for the seriously sporty people.
The compass is interesting. I have a feeling it will be used, in conjunction with the U1 chip, for some very interesting 'object finding' tech in the near future.
I’m looking at getting my first smart/fitness watch - I run but want the get into it more seriously and be able to run a half marathon eventually I’m an iPhone user so I know Apple Watch works better with that but I’m torn between the SE and the Garmin Venu 2S! Any thoughts?
Yep super interesting review. I find myself constantly tracking if apple matches a garmin or not, even though I'm very happy with my forerunner 245 music... Great review
About optical sensors. Don’t think that outer view of sensor mean something. I think they have 2-3 types of sensors with improvements. To clearly understand, you should do a teardown of AW & we will see what improved & what hardware used in all types.
Not really. At a high level PPG sensors have X number of LED's, and Y number of photodiodes with Z colors. When you change anything starting at that level, it's a different sensor. Similarly, when you change the physical arrangement of those same parts, you're changing the sensor design and 'package', as it's called within the PPG industry.
I don’t care about gps. I use a Fitbit Alta hr which is very basic. Do you think this would be a good option for me? I really just care about heart rate, calories, tracking steps and my workouts. I’m wondering if it tracks workouts automatically. Or do I have to start a workout for it to track it?
Well aligned T-Shirt :) I still find the battery life atrocious, 6 hours GPS are way to little when I go for a day hiking and having to recharge daily is just to much an inconvenience for me if I didn’t use the watch heavily that day. I am heavily invested in the apple ecosystem but this is not going to replace my Fenix.
