I once bought my first Apple Watch just for fitness aspects. But like a year ago I started using it on a daily basis for my everyday life and I’m not wearing any other watch at the moment. What I personally like the most from the Apple Watch is the versatility. I am a runner, yes, but I also do other workouts and I am a gym class instructor. So my watch needs to fit into these multipurposes. And I have to say: For me it’s the best running device. Just because of one reason: I can leave my phone at home and don’t have to worry about music or emergencies etc. I simply connect my AirPods to my watch and boom I have my whole music library on my wrist whilst I’m running through the woods. Fantastic BUT I have to say I am not so into all the small little details you named. So for me the data that the Nike running club/the native fitness app collects is enough :) hope this info might help someone who is reading this and isn’t sure if you should buy the watch.
@Rebecca Chen, the Watch no. Even if: you can clean it under water. No problem :) the band you can easily clean with just water and bar soap. But you can easily get multiple watchbands from Amazon/Ali express for really cheap. Yes, it’s not the Apple Original, what means it’s not the same quality. But it’s cheap and easily exchangeable. And not a single watch band I have is dirty or got ever broken. :) I hope this info might help you
I just realised the problem isn’t the difference between these watches, the problem is me! I don’t know whether I’m a runner or an Apple fan boy! Existential crisis!! Great review as always 👍🏻
I have the same problem. I would love to wear my Apple Watch every day but every time I put in on I instantly miss my Garmin Fenix 6. Oh man, lifes tough, I guess.
I got both Apple Watch SE and Garmin Fenix 6s and this is my opinion: if you want the watch to prepare a given running target or a competition you need the Garmin. However, if you need a watch to track your running without too much detail, for instance, keep your shape, fat loose or track your daily calories and so on the Apple Watch is better because it does that plus much more tasks throughout your day as an excellent smarthwatch. It depends how focus our are into running like doing speed series, hills running, etc. With Garmin you can create those workouts. With apple you cannot. I ended up using the Apple Watch cuz I do many more things and battery last my two days. If would need to run and prepare a race I would grab the Garmin cuz it tells you all data and feedback you need to get your running goal.
I completely agree. Garmin is better suited as a dedicated sports watch. The Apple Watch can track sports but also is great for daily life. Thanks for watching!
At 3:50, you can customise what features you see on the workout app if you go through the watch app on your iPhone, scroll down to ‘workout’ and tap ‘workout view’ and choose the workout you want to customise.
I am a new runner and am being gifted the Apple watch SE for Christmas. If I was buying something for myself it would not have been my first choice, I would have gone down the Garmin route, so I have found your reviews really interesting. It looks like I will not be rushing out to buy a Garmin now, I will see how I get on the my new Apple SE first. Thank you so much for this. It is also good to see what apps people are recommending to use with it
I have been a Garmin user for the past few years. I just recently purchased an Apple Watch SE. I still use my Garmin VA4 for running, workouts, sleep metrics and to compete in group challenges. The AW is very functional for the rest of my day.
Interesting overview thanks 👍🏻 I’ve had a series 4 for a good while & normally use Strava app for running & cycling. I also really like listening to music while running via a Bluetooth Shure earbuds... I’m not a competitive runner so the Apple Watch works fine for me.
I assume I can just sync a bluetooth chest strap HRM to the Apple watch, correct? Looking into one of these instead of a Garmin 245 Music because I could use the Apple watch with my existing Apple music subscription, whereas for the Garmin I'd have to get a separate Spotify subscription. For battery life, I could just turn it off between runs, as I wouldn't need it anyway.
I’ve had it for a few days, The only part is that you can’t manually lock it which should be a feature. Sometimes it will auto open apps and stuff. But the best part is if you’re trying to wake up for work or something and you have an alarm set on your phone. If you’re wearing your watch it will vibrate so you will wake up instantly
Have you tried the water lock out icon? That will lock the screen! The alarms are nice but I find I can't sleep with mine due to needing to charge it nightly. Thanks for watching!
As active duty military I run a lot so music is a MUST! I hate carrying my phone while running. And I’m not a techie so the complexities of the Garmins appear off putting. FOR ME so far looks like the apple watch SE is the best pick. It’s main downside is battery.
Totally agree with other comments about Workoutdoors, it changes the watch. Also if you’re running with your phone it uses the gps from that. I love that I still get all day gps tracking while hiking using that feature. It’s not as accurate but I really only need great accuracy when I don’t have my phone and I’m pushing my pace on a run.
TheRem484 in the Strava iPhone app. You go to your profile -> settings gear -> applications, services and devices -> health and Apple Watch. You then have to manually import the work outs into Strava afterward but you can essentially set it up to notify you.
I have a Garmin 245 Music 🎶 and my wife just got me an 🍎 Watch Series 6 as a gift. I also just got a Stryd Foot Pod! I have connected the Stryd to both the Garmin 245 🎶 and 🍎 Series 6 and use them both at the same time all the time even at work. The 🍎 on my left wrist and the Garmin on my right wrist. Which device do you think the Stryd 🦶 pod works best with from these two watches ?
@@ChaseTheSummit it’s been great! Thanks! Loving the Stryd 🦶 pod. Been using the Stryd foot pod connected to my Garmin 245 Music 🎶 on my left wrist while using my 🍎 6 on the right wrist to compare results. 🍎 6 has been good and I have the Stryd app on it but been looking at the Stryd Metrics on the Garmin 245. Can the Stryd be connected and show metrics on both the Garmin 245 and 🍎 6 at the same time? That would be 😎! I also found a huge discount on a Garmin Fenix 6 Pro ($495) ! I am considering getting it. Is it worth it to get the Garmin Fenix 6 Pro when I already have the 🍎 Series 6, Garmin 245 Music and Stryd foot pod already?
How does the connectivity of GPS vs GPS + Cellular affect the use of fitness tracking apps? I am especially interested in Strava. Could I still use it without the Cellular service? I am so tired of carrying my phone to track my workouts.
You can still track your workouts without a cellular connection (even without your phone on you). The activities basically sync once you're done and have a connection to your phone.
For multi functional purpose would an AW be a good pick up? I don't want to drag my phone with me, and just run with my watch while also being able to listen to music. As for the Garmin watch the 255 is the most budget friendly but still 160 euro more than the AWSE. I only intend to use AW for fitness/running, but I want to listen to music while running through BT.
This may seem like a stupid question, but for the gps model (not gps+cellular) you can use the standard running app and other running apps on your Apple Watch without your phone, right?
@@romansteinbrenner Stryd has their own app. Also iSmoothRun is compatible to power metrics from Stryd, but not compatible to structured workouts from the Stryd app.
Hey, I found that the garmin vivoactive was not quite precise in term of milage. I was thinking about changing to apple watch because I use apple in all other devices. Is the forerunner better in terms of precision and batterie than the vivoactive ? Thanks great video!
Great video! I use my SE for riding, and it suits my needs perfectly. It was good to see somebody's honest opinion on a different usage of the watch. Got the thumbs up :D Stay safe outdoors!
I run regularly with an Apple Watch user & I’ve never thought I’d rather have one than a Garmin. I still think that BUT the GPS data on this review & others does look super accurate!. I’m sticking with Garmin though. Touch screens & sweat aren’t a good mix. Plus all the other metrics in Garmin Connect are really good.
The touch screen on the AW is really nice but it's super frustrating if you're sweaty, wearing gloves, or in the rain. Can't beat good old fashioned buttons! I also agree that Garmin Connect is MUCH more powerful in terms of training tools. Thanks for watching!
You can click the crown and power button to pause workout and avoid the screen to end a run. Also 3x tap screen for intervals. Not perfect but better than nothing.
Thank you dude. I left Fenix 5 behind and moved to Apple Watch SE. I´m runner first. I´m not really missing all the information collected by the garmin, as I don´t care about ground contact time, vertical oscillation, ... at the end of the day these information is not going to change what I´m doing, just running. Still I´m finding very interesting having connection to the network without carrying my phone. THis is specially interesting to me as I´m also windsurfer, so being able to call for emergency from the water is a great feature. I know I can carry a phone with me, but having in your wrist is a plus.
@@ChaseTheSummit no way, thank for your valuable contribution, I found it very useful! I also found the app work outdoors recommendable for AW, it adds possibility of planning training sessions (intervals, farlek...). Once again thank you pal
Help anyone. I really need to ask you something. I love garmin watches, but the wife wants to match... anyway.. I really like that the interval training on my Garmin, I run for one-minute rest 30 seconds. can i do this on the SE? Im sure there is an app for this on the apple watch. anyone can answer.
My main reason for using an apple watch as my main fitness tracker is the heart rate accuracy (Apple Watch S6) absolutely bang on with my HRM Pro/F6 combo. It even handles weightlifting super well.
Thank you for the video but I couldnt understand two things: 1. I saw that you run with music. How long the battery life will be in the apple watch while having music on+gps+cellular or just music+gps? Will it survive a marathon? 2. How accurate is the distance measurement on the apple watch? Thank you
1. depends how fast you run a marathon haha! I think you can get 3-4 hours of it while using all of the features but it might be a stretch depending on how often the screen is illuminated and brightness settings.. 2. Distance measurement is pretty good and inline with my other test devices.
@@ChaseTheSummit thank you so much. So I guess its still better to get a garmin for battery life. I wanted to buy the apple because of the cellular option which can be nice for long distance run if I get stuck or something
Hi Chase the summit! Thanks for the video! When I bought my first SmartWatch (my current series 5) I did it looking for fitness insight. However, after nearly a year of use it leaves me with a disappointing feeling, because when it comes to sports it doesn’t give you enough information, stats.... it so basic. It is true that it gives me more in terms of smartwatch stuff but for me that is not necessary. As long as it tells me when someone calls me or text me.... for the rest I always end up taking the phone which I always have with me. I think Garmin will give me so much information for all my runs, rides, hikes, skiing days, sleep, fitness status... and I won’t have to worry about battery!!! Having to charge the Apple Watch everyday it is so annoying, not to mention the impossibility to go for a long day into the mountains without failing to record your entire hike or being worry about it!
I totally agree. the AW is great in some aspects but for dedicated sports tracking Garmin/Suunto/Coros/Polar devices are so much more reliable and full featured. Thanks for watching!
Chase the Summit ...spoiler alert! I’ve made up my mind, I am getting rid of my AW and amazon is bringing me a Garmin fénix 6 pro tomorrow. It hasn’t been easy to make the decision between all those brands but I hope Garmin doesn’t leave me the same disappointing feeling as the AW.
Thank you for taking the time to create this video. I've been a Garmin wearer for years and have just purchased an Apple SE (my wife actually got it for me). I was going to do exactly what you did - wear both and compare data - and you doing so saved me the time in crunching the numbers. What you say here makes sense to me knowing the Garmin and it looks like I'll be holding onto my 235 for my running.
Hi, sorry if I missed it, but with the SE2, will it use its own inbuilt GPS even when carrying the iPhone on a run/outdoor activity or walking etc, or will it leverage the phones GPS ? I’m hoping it will use its own even when carrying the phone
el apple watch se, te permite salir a correr sin llevar el celular? Me refiero a si tambien almacena los datos en el caso de salir a caminar, nadar, etc....
Apple Watch SE will work with or without your phone to track your runs using the GPS antenna inside the watch. However, you won't be able to send/receive texts or make calls unless you have the Cellular version.
You can change the display on the running app you have to go into the watch app on your iPhone, then Workout, then workout view. You can change it all in there for each individual exercise type.
Interesting. I'm finding the display on my Forerunner 245 increasingly hard to read. A larger screen and better contrast would help I think. I may look into the Apple watches.
The retina display on the Apple Watch is certainly vibrant and easy to read especially using an app like iSmoothRun or WorkOutDoors! The "not always on" display takes some adjusting though. I like that the 245 never turns off or dims. Thanks for watching.
Great in depth review. The Apple Watch might record sleep data if it is not being recharged. Heard that the version 7 can be charged more quickly than the SE allowing to record sleep data if you recharge it before going to bed. 80% in 10mn. Sleep data helps to calculate training load and evaluate if you need to rest and might be overreaching. I prefer to have a good multipurpose App than having to load a bunch to achieve the same and having to deal with exchanging data via Apple health. For that reason I’ll stick to dedicated sport watches like Garmin or Polar that have greater battery life and provide excellent metrics and tracking abilities straight out of the box. Keep up the good reviews
You don't need a phone if you're recording a GPS activity. But if you wanted to access some sort of map you'd need to find an app that supports offline mapping (there's a few on the app store).
Not really on a plan right now. I just try to get out when I can and on the treadmill when I can't. When I'm training for an actual race I'll be a bit more structured. Thanks for watching!
I’ve got two Apple watches, but don’t use either of them now. I use my Fenix 6X for all my activities. My biggest bugbear with Apple was that I couldn’t use my watch to navigate when I was unsure of my whereabouts = I travel a lot and often want to run in unfamiliar territory and the agar in excels in this area..
Dave please can you in details show how to set up de Vo2 Max in the apple watch 6, I could not find how to make it work on my serie 6 apple wath, please
I would assume so. If the GPS chip is active it will probably draw the same power consumption regardless of the activity. It also depends how often the screen wakes up. Hope that helps!
My son just bought this watch and there is an issue with total distance accuracy. On a known course of 5 miles his watch measured 5.8 and in a known course of 3 miles his watch measured 3.4 Any suggestions on how to improve the accuracy. Both of my Garmins are practically spot on on both of those courses.
Hmm... That's odd. I'd suggest standing still for a few minutes before starting to run outside. It might help the GPS get a better lock. Does he run under heavy tree cover or in cities with lots of buildings? Does he have the watch under layers of clothing? All of that can play a role in accuracy.
I’ve take. My Apple Watch Series 3 up to 40 miles and still have battery left over. I’m curious if I can push it to 62 miles with the new series 6? I’m also a well known trail and marathon runner.
You got a new subscriber brother. We need more RUclipsrs using mainstream tech in specialized scenarios. Because most of the specialized tech is super expensive.
Thanks for the video! I'm a casual runner (I'm 22 and I've been running for about 5 years), but I've never had a fitness watch before. I did some research and the ones I most identify with are AW 6 / SE and Garmin Venu/Sq. I don't run exclusively, I also do yoga and functional training. However, I am interested in evolving in the race and I liked the “Garmin Coach” feature. What do you recommend? If relevant, I also have an iPhone
Both will do the job. The Garmin Venu SQ seems really awesome at its price and has much better battery life than the AW. However, the AW is much "smarter" and more integrated with the Apple Ecosystem. If you want to download additional apps and stuff that might matter for you. Personally I'd go Garmin for fitness, Apple for everything else.
@@ChaseTheSummit Is the lack of altimeter a problem for runners (not pro) ? Do you know if it can be use the iPhone altimeter if I carry it with me? I like this one because of the size, I have a small wrist and the regular Venu seems to be really big for me. As I said my other option would be AW6 SE but smartwatch features are not my priority, I care more about health and fitness stuff
Well crap I've been running with an Apple Watch for a few years now. You just showed me something that I did not know. I love it I changed all the settings and now I like it a lot better when I use the Apple Watch running.
Awesome video. Was exactly what I was looking for. Thank you. I used to use the Apple Watch 3 and the Nike running app. I liked it but I love my garmin forerunner 55. Thinking about getting a Cellular SE (second gen) that way I can leave my phone behind while running, walking, at work, etc. but not sure since I love my garmin so much.
I have just purchased this watch nike version and I am totally amazed, never thought id say it but its better than a garmin forerunner for the price !!
@@ChaseTheSummit I am actually in shock myself ha. Also another off put from a Garmin stand point is I have an iPhone phone 11 and Garmin Connect just does not like iOS14. Keep up the great videos !!
I use NRC on Apple watch, the NRC show much data, where the core app no show much data event export or sync to strava, but when we buy HealthFit Apps the core Workout Apps is showing much data. On the gyro altimeter censor I think NRC is good measure the elevation gain, core apps is good to, but when core apps sync to strava they measure to high elevation gain, I think strava data about topography is not up to date in especially in my country
I want an Apple Watch for running, but I’m mostly concerned with using it basically like an iPod shuffle with Strava. You didn’t really cover the experience of using Apple Music or anything with this watch.
At the time I didn't use apple music so it wasn't something I covered. It does work great like most apple things... If you use apple products with apple products you'll generally have a good experience.
Hey Dave, so I just got Apple watch series 6 but still have the Garmin Forerunner 245. My plan is to use Garmin watch for runs and when I get back I switch to Apple watch for everyday use. So hard part is going to get the Garmin connect to sync to Apple watch rings. Anyone else doing this?? Thanks
My heart rate registers much higher on my Apple Watch SE compared to my Garmin Vivoactive. I wore both today, small difference in pace and speed but average HR was 152 max 171 on Garmin. On Apple it was 181 average, 188 max. I know by how I feel during my runs that the Garmin is closer to the correct numbers. Any solutions to this?
@@ChaseTheSummit I actually started to wear it slightly more loose and calibrated the settings in the Watch app on my phone and now both devices are almost identical on all stats/data.
I consider myself less knowledgeable than an average person. So, thanks for all your inputs. 🙏 I don’t own an Apple or a Garmin Watch, but now I am thinking about getting either one of those. Just one quick question, please. When someone purchases an Apple Watch, isn’t it the intention of the typical user to install running app in it, instead of taking an Apple Watch as it is? I heard a good running app costs a few bucks a month which will quickly add up. 🤷🏼♂️
The Apple Watch has a built in workout app and of course you can download several other free offerings like Nike Run Club or Strava. The best app I've found so far is called "Workoutdoors" and it's only $6 bucks... one time, no monthly fee. Hope that helps!
I have been using the Apple Watch 5 for 6 months now and I have to say that the default app isn't enough. You need the iSmoothrun or something else. I got used to iSmoothrun more than the other competitor's apps. The app allows me to program my training and also gives me more data. I'm actually now looking into getting a Garmin Fenix 6 or a 945 (I'm still deciding and that is why I got into your channel, thanks BTW). My decision of getting a dedicated watch for running, cycling, and swimming, is that the Apple Watch GPS seems inaccurate. But it may be me again not choosing the right settings on the app iSmoothrun as they recommend you use the watch data only when selecting on the start screen.
@@ChaseTheSummit You are right, I got to know this app after checking the comments here and looks like its better than the iSmoothrun I was using. I will give it a shot.
You can indeed customize the running view or pretty much for all worksouts. For this you need to use the watch app on the phone, you can’t configure it directly on the watch
I ended up figuring that out! I knew I'd get something wrong in this video... DOH! It kinda stinks that you can't do it on the watch itself though. What if I left my phone at home? Thanks for watching!
Which iPhone would you recommend to go w the Apple Watch SE? I’m thinking of totally switching over to he iPhone as well,as Apple SE after you review. Right now I use Garmin 235 an have an android phone, lol.
Chase the Summit thanks. I’m looking for best price, so really don’t care too about the upgrades specs, and a larger phone won’t serve me really either. I have smaller hands, 🙂. And I don’t need cellular on the watch, correct?
I love apple products, but when I got my garmin I switched to android and have never looked back. So thank you garmin for opening my eyes up to what's really available out there. Garmin/ android for president!!!!
@@ChaseTheSummit i want it to track steps, calories, strength training & HIIT. I run twice a week. which budget friendly watch do you recommend? I’m also looking into garmin venu sq.
Longtime Apple user here but not anymore. The Apple watch is ok if your in Apple's garden. If your not, well thats a different story. With Garmin you're platform independent which is a great thing.
I have question for Se owner. does the gps and heart rate sensor are accurate? I need the answer to decide wether to buy or not. please respond anyone!
Hey, epic video, only thing I was curious how much battery you used on all these devices when on the same run ? I've got one and it seems to use almost 30-40% battery on just a small 5km run with music. Does your garmin do the same? might swap. Thanks!
Depends on which Garmin you’re using. Something like the Fenix 6 or Forerunner 945 will last up to 10 hours while using music + GPS or 35 hours with GPS only. Music is a battery hog unfortunately!
How does Apple Watch calculate pace? My friend and I both have Apple Watches Series 4 Nike+. We run side by side all the time but we get different pace with a difference of about 20-30 sec, which is a lot for just a 5K run. Furthermore, at the end of the run, he needs to make about 100 meters more to complete the 5K. Is it because of cadence? Anyone can explain? We both use Nike Run Club app.
Chase the Summit Actually he tried to raise his cadence while keeping the same speed as mine and the data we got was much more similar. So I thought that pace was being calculated based on cadence. Although I would expect to get the same pace/speed for the same distance covered for the same amount of time.
I've bought an polar vantage V and I was not happy with it. My bpm was not right... So i've send it back to the shop where i bought it and now i'm considering to buy the apple watch SE. I run 30k in a week and gps and hart rate are important to me. Which watch do u recommend? PS love ur vids!!
The Apple Watch SE might suit your needs. The only bummer is that it basically needs to be charged daily. If you're primarily a road runner the Coros Pace 2 or the Garmin Forerunner 245 are also good choices! Hope that helps!
WorkOutDoors has literally been the app that convinced me to use my AW 4 Stainless Steel for everything now, instead of my old Fenix 6. The developer is actually super cool too, and he's open to letting nerds like us beta test for him! Amazing smartwatch, does everything I need it to. Yes, it's not all contained in one main place, and you need to install separate apps and then use HealthFit or RunGap to get your data to a good place (I still use Garmin Connect and just sync over everything using RunGap, which also syncs to Strava), but it's so feature-rich for a price that is cheaper than the F6. Good video, Dave, keep it up.
"Old Fenix 6" makes me feel sad. I've heard a lot of good things about WorkOutDoors I'll definitely be checking it out! Thanks for the tip! I guess I just wish all of these features were baked into the product rather than requiring third party developers to make it work. Thanks for watching!
I decided to keep my series 5 after confusing to move to a forunner. But a friend suggest workoutdoors. Best running app vs super cool developer like you said.
I am looking to replace my series 3. And am so torn what to get! This shouldn’t feel like a life decision! My longest runs are very occasional 50ks and I’m like a 7 hour 50K runner. You’re saying the fully charged SE in gps only last like 7 hours? Ugh. I’m also looking at Coros pace 2….
Yup, on a full charge you'll have a hard time completing a 50K with the Apple Watch unless you find time to charge mid-event unfortunately. You could also disable the Heart Rate sensor and turn down the screen brightness to milk a couple extra hours out of it in a pinch. Hope that helps!
Great comparison. I been using a polar m600 for awhile to track my cycling then I got hook on Wahoo’s stuff. Then I won garmin Fenix 5 in a raffle. I think if you are looking start getting In shape an Apple Watch will do the job, but if your seriously training for events a dedicated sports like a garmin, polar watch or a wahoo is going to suit you better.
I have an Apple Watch series 3 ( had some loyalty program points to use so just paid for shipping), and I more or less use it as an activity tracker . Whilst it is fairly accurate. It has one massive Achilles heel, pretty much the same one subsequent versions have, battery life, at current activity levels I get approximately 2 days use ( I don't sleep with it on). For running outdoors I prefer to use my Sunto Ambit 2 although I have had to jerry rig the Watch bands because of them breaking over time ( Ambit 2 has great battery life). If I can swing the cash I would replace applewatch and theambit with a Garmin Instinct Solar or Fenix 6 pro.
Yeah the battery life is the big limiting factor unfortunately. Apple Watch makes a nice companion to a dedicated sports watch like a Garmin. Thanks for watching!
I can’t seem to get the audio cues on my AirPods from the workout app. Anyone have a fix for it? I connect my watch to my phone and listen to music on Spotify as well
Kind of a toss up depending on the person but in my testing I’ve gotten the best results from Polar watches . I’ve heard the Apple Watch Series 6 is quite good as well but haven’t tested it.
I actually figured this out shortly after filming this video. DOH! I knew I'd make a mistake. Still... the app is pretty limiting. Thanks for watching!
The lack of always on screen of my Apple Watch 3 is exactly why I'm switching to Garmin or Coros (Haven't decided yet...) Totally tired of the screen flaking out when I raise my wrist to see my heart rate. No, going to a v7 apple watch isn't going to happen since I only wear it for running.
Very good review, thanks for sharing!! I noticed when you were showing the HR data that it looks like the apple watch takes fewer data points than your garmin watches. Looks like it might not be a great tool for doing intervals or something with fast changing data based on the seemingly fewer data points. As a long time Suunto GPS tester, I have a few tips for you for future reviews: 1) Try not to do out and back routes. It is very hard to see how accurate the GPS tracks are compared to your actual path when you are looking at 2 sets of tracks stacked on each other (from an out and back) 2) Try to incorporate routes that have a decent number of sharp turns or curves, so you can see how it tracks in comparison to easy straight line and "gentle curve" running 3) When comparing GPS devices, wear as many as you can on the same arm. All GPS devices have some sort of sideways offset, so wearing the watches on different arms is a less accurate method of comparing; especially when comparing overall total distance and GPS track accuracy. I can wear up to 3 watches on one arm by doing the following: wear one watch on my wrist, wear another on my forearm, and a 3rd wrapped around my hand. Also make sure that the watches are spaced by about 1-2" so the GPS antenna don't interfere with each other -- a buff or wristband Hopefully a few of these tips might be useful, I have learned many different things to watch out for in 5 years of GPS device testing. Keep up the great vids, and happy trail running!
Thanks for the feedback. I actually prefer out and back tracks for analyzing data as it gives you a better idea of how the GPS is tracking on a single device since map data won't be 100% perfect. Theoretically the tracks should be right on top of each other if you're on the same side of the road/trail. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for this Video! Definitely some interesting thoughts about the Apple Watch. I am still not sure, which watch i should get. Just because i love to hear music/podcasts while running and i am an iphone user..
Thanks for watching! The Apple Watch is pretty awesome for the right person. If you don't mind charging daily I'd say it's a good companion to an Iphone!
Great vid Dave! Just got an SE to try it out. Generally use a Fenix 6 for long distance triathlon stuff. SE is never going to replace the Garmin but its a really useful addition. I’m finding it useful for controlling music, sending texts while running......Siri works great! So great as a second device and its a proper smart watch, so can do loads of stuff that the Garmin can’t which is cool
For sure. It's a nice companion to a dedicated sports watch and it's great for shorter runs on the road. My only issues with the AWSE is the battery life. Aside from that it's a really great daily wear watch. Thanks for watching!
Albino Shrimp babies it’s actually the same hardware. You can download the Nike app on any Apple Watch. The only thing you get with the Nike version is apps pre installed, a special band, and some branding.
Awesome video! I’ve had two garmins and when I do an activity the heart rate is low for the first ten minutes and then kicks in. Any idea what is causing this or a fix for it? I love the watches other than this one issue. I’ll be at 150sh and garmin will be stuck on 100 for 10 minutes while I climb hills lol. Instinct and vivoactive 3
Hmm... have you tried comparing that to a chest or arm based HR sensor? The only advice I can give you is to make sure the watch is tight (shouldn't be able to fit a finger under it) and slide it as far up on your wrist as you can. If it's on the bone it doesn't get a good read. Thanks for watching!
@@ChaseTheSummit yep tried everything and it's happened with two different garmin's and never with ky samsung, apple watch or fitbit. Maybe I'm just not built for a garmin lol. I can't figure it out although researching it it seems to he a common issue for people with garmin. Absolutely love their watches too so bummed out
Thanks for that video. I am wondering if I can use the apple watch SE, full function strava without cellular. Would love to be able to run with no phone but have the data with GPS update to strava!
Yes, but it won't sync to strava unless you have an apple watch with cellular connection. You'll still need to connect your phone to upload the data. Thanks for watching!
And I have to say:
For me it’s the best running device. Just because of one reason: I can leave my phone at home and don’t have to worry about music or emergencies etc. I simply connect my AirPods to my watch and boom I have my whole music library on my wrist whilst I’m running through the woods. Fantastic
BUT I have to say I am not so into all the small little details you named. So for me the data that the Nike running club/the native fitness app collects is enough :) hope this info might help someone who is reading this and isn’t sure if you should buy the watch.
Sounds like you found the right tool for your needs! Thanks for watching!
Do you find that the apple watch itself and the strap could get dirty from sweat, debris, dirt if you workout/run with it on your wrist daily?
Haha! I feel the same way. I'm a tech nerd but I'm also a runner. Finding one watch to rule them all is difficult!
❤️
I have the same problem. I would love to wear my Apple Watch every day but every time I put in on I instantly miss my Garmin Fenix 6. Oh man, lifes tough, I guess.
@@quest666PL troubles of first world jaja
Great review, it's important to note that in this case, the apple watch is a lot cheaper, so it's good deal (Garmin user here)
Very true! Thanks for watching!
EpicEarthGaming YT thanks! I eventually figured this out. I wish it was available on the watch itself! Thanks for watching!
It is also good to see what apps people are recommending to use with it
Nice! The SE is a great watch for fitness and day to day life. Check out the "work outdoors" app. I've really been enjoying it!
I have been a Garmin user for the past few years. I just recently purchased an Apple Watch SE. I still use my Garmin VA4 for running, workouts, sleep metrics and to compete in group challenges. The AW is very functional for the rest of my day.
Thanks for sharing.
Interesting overview thanks 👍🏻 I’ve had a series 4 for a good while & normally use Strava app for running & cycling. I also really like listening to music while running via a Bluetooth Shure earbuds... I’m not a competitive runner so the Apple Watch works fine for me.
It definitely does the job and is super easy to use. Thanks for watching!
You can actually add more options from the iPhone for the workout apps also you can add objectives like average pace or rolling pace. Cool video!
I ended up noticing this after I posted the video. Doh! Thanks for watching!
I just started my running journey and the SE has been great for a beginner runner like me. I also like that it can track other kinds of activities.
Just to cofirm you can not use Spotify with cellular only apple music!
Right, my mistake. I hope they change that soon.
@@ChaseTheSummit now you can, in beta though
If I get the gps only version, can i use apple music without carrying my phone? Maybe like downloading the playlist into the watch?
@@Iamad19 no you have to use Apple Music to pre download
Now you can!
Thanks for sharing!
I've heard good things! I'll check it out!
I’m just using the workout app from Apple for running, cycling, swimming and snyc the data to strava. its enough for me.
They sure do make it easy! I guess I just miss the customization. Thanks for watching!
How do you sync your data to strava?
TheRem484 in the Strava iPhone app. You go to your profile -> settings gear -> applications, services and devices -> health and Apple Watch. You then have to manually import the work outs into Strava afterward but you can essentially set it up to notify you.
@@DesertTriDad Wow! Thanks mate
The Stryd app on the Apple Watch is pretty awesome! But I do like how seamlessly it works on Garmin too. What's your experience been so far?
Hey friend. How to connect addidas running app installed on Ticwatch 3 to strava? Thanks 👍
This may seem like a stupid question, but for the gps model (not gps+cellular) you can use the standard running app and other running apps on your Apple Watch without your phone, right?
Yes. The watch works without your phone because it has an internal GPS antenna. Thanks for watching!
Using Apple Watch series 4 with Stryd, and I absolutely love it🏃💨
Awesome!
With which app do you use the stryd ?
@@romansteinbrenner Stryd has their own app. Also iSmoothRun is compatible to power metrics from Stryd, but not compatible to structured workouts from the Stryd app.
Hey, I found that the garmin vivoactive was not quite precise in term of milage. I was thinking about changing to apple watch because I use apple in all other devices. Is the forerunner better in terms of precision and batterie than the vivoactive ? Thanks great video!
The newer Forerunner 255 is a pretty big step up in terms of GPS accuracy as compared to Venu/Vivoactive.
You can customize the data on the Apple Watch running app also
Great video! I use my SE for riding, and it suits my needs perfectly. It was good to see somebody's honest opinion on a different usage of the watch. Got the thumbs up :D Stay safe outdoors!
Thanks! Glad to hear you're enjoying the SE!
Do we have to carry our phone while running for GPS tracking? Asking for non-cellular version
Nope, even the non-cell version has GPS built in.
The cellular version is really nice in that way. Always having a way to call for help without lugging around a phone! Thanks for watching.
Im sure there is an app for this on the apple watch. anyone can answer.
thanks for the video, i was already thinking about whether i should buy an apple watch to run or a garmin!!
Glad you found it helpful!
If you sweat a lot, is it easy to stop a run with sweaty palm/fingers on Touch screen?
You can configure the apple watch to use the buttons to stop the activity in the settings.
My main reason for using an apple watch as my main fitness tracker is the heart rate accuracy (Apple Watch S6) absolutely bang on with my HRM Pro/F6 combo. It even handles weightlifting super well.
If I am correct the apple watch SE has an older HR sensor, I can only speak from the S6 experience.
I've heard great things with the S6 heart rate sensor! I wish the SE got the same one.
Thank you for the video but I couldnt understand two things:
Glad it was helpful!
I miss something in your review. Can we plan trainings such as laps in AW? Within Apple Training app, Strava or whatever.
That's coming soon in Watch OS9 update sometime in the fall.
Going for a run with an apple watch se nike. Do I have to carry my iPhone with me? ✨
Nope.
@@ChaseTheSummit big thx 🤘🏾🙏🏽
RunGap is a great app for interfacing to Garmin Connect, Training Peaks and other services
Thanks for sharing
what is the app you are using for showing running data, and comparing gps etc? and how do you export them from apple watch?
I use something called Quantified and also the DC Rainmaker analyzer tool over on Ray's website. To export from Apple Watch I use RunGap.
Hi, sorry if I missed it, but with the SE2, will it use its own inbuilt GPS even when carrying the iPhone on a run/outdoor activity or walking etc, or will it leverage the phones GPS ? I’m hoping it will use its own even when carrying the phone
Yes. The new Apple Watches always resort to the internal GPS.
el apple watch se, te permite salir a correr sin llevar el celular? Me refiero a si tambien almacena los datos en el caso de salir a caminar, nadar, etc....
Yup, it has an internal GPS antenna
Did he bring the phone on the run? This is important... I don't know whether I should buy GPS or cellular version..
I noticed this after posting this video... doh! Thanks for the tip. Still... the available fields are somewhat limited.
Chase the Summit yeah I agree.
Do you still have to carry your phone in order to map your route and track your statistics while running?
You don't need a phone if you're recording a GPS activity. But if you wanted to access some sort of map you'd need to find an app that supports offline mapping (there's a few on the app store).
Running 50-60 miles per week, do you follow a specific training plan?
Not really on a plan right now. I just try to get out when I can and on the treadmill when I can't. When I'm training for an actual race I'll be a bit more structured. Thanks for watching!
I’ve got two Apple watches, but don’t use either of them now. I use my Fenix 6X for all my activities. My biggest bugbear with Apple was that I couldn’t use my watch to navigate when I was unsure of my whereabouts = I travel a lot and often want to run in unfamiliar territory and the agar in excels in this area..
Having offline maps is reeeeallly nice. Thanks for watching!
This is what I use WorkOutDoors for on the Apple watch. GPX to watch and then I get vector maps + route on the Apple watch.
Dave please can you in details show how to set up de Vo2 Max in the apple watch 6, I could not find how to make it work on my serie 6 apple wath, please
You'll need to download an app like "HealthFit" that can calculate your fitness. Apple Watch doesn't do this by default.
Do you think using the aw se will also only get 7 hours if you use the gps for yardages in golf?
40 Miles? Dang... How many hours was that?
@@ChaseTheSummit it was about 5 hours. I was trying to go for 7 minute miles but the trail was a lot tougher than I anticipated.
You got a new subscriber brother. We need more RUclipsrs using mainstream tech in specialized scenarios. Because most of the specialized tech is super expensive.
Thank you!
As I said my other option would be AW6 SE but smartwatch features are not my priority, I care more about health and fitness stuff
You can actually edit the datafields on the native workout app by going to the apple watch settings on your phone. Thanks for a great review!
Thanks for the tip! I actually figured it out but the options are still pretty limited. I knew I'd make a mistake in this video 🤦♂️
Well crap I've been running with an Apple Watch for a few years now. You just showed me something that I did not know. I love it I changed all the settings and now I like it a lot better when I use the Apple Watch running.

At the time I didn't use apple music so it wasn't something I covered. It does work great like most apple things... If you use apple products with apple products you'll generally have a good experience.
@@ChaseTheSummit ok sweet.
Thanks
You might be able to pull this off with RunGap? I haven't tried it.
Random question if I miss a payment for Apple Music would I still be able to listen 2 my songs already downloaded and would my music still be there?
I doubt it. I’m sure Apple has a way of syncing authorization with your phone. But I’m not totally sure 🤷♂️
That's odd. Typically the Apple Watch is more accurate. I'm not sure what might be causing your problem. Are you wearing it tightly on your wrist?
@@ChaseTheSummit Thank you thank you 🙏 I Will be watching for Black Friday flyers from the local Walmart and Costco 😀
Interesting! Yes, I didn't get perfect GPS accuracy from the AW either. I did find that the "Workoutdoors" app was pretty awesome though!
Chase the Summit well, if you leave it at home you can’t customize the views on the go. But then again... how often do you need that?
Which iPhone would you recommend to go w the Apple Watch SE? I’m thinking of totally switching over to he iPhone as well,as Apple SE after you review. Right now I use Garmin 235 an have an android phone, lol.
Really any of them have the same integration. I've been using it with the iPhone SE but I'll be getting the new 12 pro soon!
Chase the Summit thanks. I’m looking for best price, so really don’t care too about the upgrades specs, and a larger phone won’t serve me really either. I have smaller hands, 🙂. And I don’t need cellular on the watch, correct?
Can someone tell me what program he's using to compare the data between watches? Thank you.
I use DC Rainmakers analyzer along with something called Quantified.
Runkeeper? I use this app on my phone while running...
Edit : What about the Fitbit Versa 3? How is that watch for a runner?
Runkeeper is a good option too. I haven't had a chance to check out the Versa 3 unfortunately but it's on my list! Thanks for watching!
I love apple products, but when I got my garmin I switched to android and have never looked back. So thank you garmin for opening my eyes up to what's really available out there. Garmin/ android for president!!!!
They're both pretty great. I do like how integrated the apple ecosystem is but I also enjoy the freedom that comes with Android/Garmin.

The Polar H9 and OH1+ work great.
Longtime Apple user here but not anymore. The Apple watch is ok if your in Apple's garden. If your not, well thats a different story. With Garmin you're platform independent which is a great thing.
For sure, nice for Apple users... Non-starter for everyone else. Nice device though! Thanks for watching!
I have question for Se owner. does the gps and heart rate sensor are accurate? I need the answer to decide wether to buy or not. please respond anyone!
I think I cover this in the video but the AWSE is pretty good in GPS mode but not perfect in terms of HR data.
5:23 Stryd 😜. Now we just need apple to allow third party apps to keep the screen on during activity
Ryan Clayton I’m afraid of what that would do to the battery! 😱
Apple Watch SE doesn’t include the “always-on display” feature, so it can’t do that... that’s only available in Series 5 and Series 6
Are you comparing watches that are about 3-400$ price difference?
In this video, yes.
It's based on GPS data and averaged. It can vary a bit but it shouldn't be 30 seconds off.
Chase the Summit Actually he tried to raise his cadence while keeping the same speed as mine and the data we got was much more similar. So I thought that pace was being calculated based on cadence. Although I would expect to get the same pace/speed for the same distance covered for the same amount of time.
Maybe a stupid question, what kind of software do you use to compare the heartrate and GPS data? Thanks
Not stupid. I use something called Quantified!
Great thanks 👍
For sure. The AW is a great start if you already have one for daily wear. T Lucky you winning a Fenix! Thanks for watching.
I connect my watch to my phone and listen to music on Spotify as well
Which Company is the best for HR accuracy? Polar / Garmin / Suunto ?
Kind of a toss up depending on the person but in my testing I’ve gotten the best results from Polar watches . I’ve heard the Apple Watch Series 6 is quite good as well but haven’t tested it.
@@ChaseTheSummit but the HR Chest belt is the best way to messure or?
You can change the data fields in the watch app on the phone.
Thanks for sharing.
Very good review, thanks for sharing!! I noticed when you were showing the HR data that it looks like the apple watch takes fewer data points than your garmin watches. Looks like it might not be a great tool for doing intervals or something with fast changing data based on the seemingly fewer data points. As a long time Suunto GPS tester, I have a few tips for you for future reviews:
1) Try not to do out and back routes. It is very hard to see how accurate the GPS tracks are compared to your actual path when you are looking at 2 sets of tracks stacked on each other (from an out and back)
2) Try to incorporate routes that have a decent number of sharp turns or curves, so you can see how it tracks in comparison to easy straight line and "gentle curve" running
3) When comparing GPS devices, wear as many as you can on the same arm. Also make sure that the watches are spaced by about 1-2" so the GPS antenna don't interfere with each other -- a buff or wristband
Hopefully a few of these tips might be useful, I have learned many different things to watch out for in 5 years of GPS device testing.
Keep in mind if you are running on the track, wearing the watch on your left or right hand makes a big difference in the distance measured.
For sure, I need a third arm!
@@ChaseTheSummit how long will the battery last with normal using (just notifications on) and 1 hour training?
I use the dafault running app on the apple watch(gps, not LTE). Has anyone used the Nike Running app without LTE and does it help?
It's about the same as the default app with a little more customization.
This video was very helpful. Thank you for this review, its exactly what I needed to know!
Glad it was helpful!
Why didn’t you get the Nike version? It’s literally designed for this
Albino Shrimp babies it’s actually the same hardware. You can download the Nike app on any Apple Watch. The only thing you get with the Nike version is apps pre installed, a special band, and some branding.
Chase the Summit plus... more nike watch faces. A little extra for the same money 😊
Absolutely love their watches too so bummed out
Do you have the cellular version or just the gps? Is cellular vital though?
Just the regular one. For me Cellular wasn't necessary and I didn't feel like paying more for my cell bill! Thanks for watching!
Chase the Summit thanks for replying!
is there an app that allows you to input treadmill incline level for your workout?
Hmm... nothing built in but there might be something on the app store.
