      DJ Carlo, thank you for all of the free lessons. I was a club DJ for about 2 years during the 90's. Prior to that, I was a radio DJ. I left the club scene for a corporate job in the radio industry and about 7 years ago, got my 1st DJ controller. Through your videos, I have learned digital skills to add to my analog knowledge. I only get to practice on the weekends but your tutorials have improved my bedroom DJ skills. Right now I only mix fort my wife's entertainment but sometimes I get invited to house parties. Keep sharing your knowledge, we appreciate it more than you know.

    3:22 about that, when starting out, don't think of other djs in your area as competition (unless ofc you are competing) but as people you can ask to teach you stuff or to shadow or smth like i met one of my rly good school friends because he was djing at homecoming this semester

    • @djcarlo
      @djcarlo  2 месяца назад

      I think my point there was to say that you just need to keep innovating, and make yourself stand out. If you get complacent, then others who do stand out will come in and take those spots. Other DJs can be your friends or foes, as in all industries, but its always good to form connections; that's an entirely different point and lesson altogether!

      It's this reason why I always wear headphones for very noisy places, as it does help keep my hearing in tact. But at the same time, if you play music in your headphones too loud, not only will you lose your hearing, but you'll end up having to go to some Ear, Nose, and Throat doctor just to clean out your earwax.

    Great tips Carlo. I got caught in the trap of getting too much music and because i dont see artwork in RB, i only saw files and i didnt get to learn the tunes. Now i create a playlist in my djpool and come back to them in a few days time to see if i really need/want those tunes. this hugley stopped me getting too many tunes. for 30 years i never once made a playlist to play out from, it was always on the fly because i knew the songs. Now i take time to construct a playlist and this is so much better now. when i stream i know whats coming next and this takes so much stress away when live. 🔥

    Hi Carlo. Your videos have valuable content as always. It's true what you say about creating a brand. There are so many great DJs that it's difficult to stand out from the rest. Besides, marketing is very important and it takes a lot of time to achieve our goals. I've been practicing for around a year and a half, but I'm shy and didn't dare to record myself. I finally did it for a contest. I uploaded the video, shared the link on my social media and... Only 1 view the first day 😅😂 It's easy to have a low self esteem with these amazing results, but I'll keep going until I'm noticed. Haha

    i havent djed for 6 or 7 years, i started, but had a huge life change before i could get really good, but the last year ive been enjoying VR and VRChat mainly, and there is actually quite a few people who dj in vr, and its pretty safe to say that there is a live dj almost 24/7 in vrchat if you know where to look. ive been to a few of them, though ive never actually been to a club in RL before. never had anyone to go with so never had a real reason to go by myself, but vr is a completely different story, so i figure why not get back into DJing. which means completely rebuilding my library from basically scratch while also juggling other bills as well

    • @djcarlo
      @djcarlo  Год назад +1

      Dude, your DJ journey is legit fascinating! Life's got its twists, but the fact that you're jumping back into the DJ game after a 6-7 year hiatus is seriously cool. The whole VR and VRChat vibe is on another level, right? I mean, 24/7 live DJ sets in VR? That's the kind of innovation we're living for.
      It's wild that you're rebuilding your music library from scratch while adulting with bills and stuff. But, hey, if VR is the space where you can unleash your DJ skills and vibe without the solo-club awkwardness, why the heck not, right?
      Props to you for finding a community in VRChat that gets the love for DJing. If you ever need tips on rebuilding that library or just wanna geek out about virtual beats, there's gotta be a bunch of like-minded peeps in the VR DJ scene who'd be down to share their wisdom.
      Here's to you, man, stepping back into the DJ scene and making waves in the virtual world. Keep those beats dropping and enjoy the ride!

      @@djcarlo yea, there are, im still trying to find them. I'll get there though, im in no rush, i know the door will open for me when im ready. it usually does. i just want to build my library, figure out why traktor pro 3 is not playing well with my DNS 1200 cdjs. i have a feeling its asio4all, because i use an external mixer. and get back into practicing and also clean out all the dirt and dust from my mixer's faders (2 inputs are still functional) but one thing at a time. i never stopped listening to the music though, i just stopped playing it, so i guess i just have to buy all the songs that ive been streaming for the last 5 years or so, and ive always been musically inclined, so it'll all turn out fine in the end.
      One thing to note for DJing in a completely virtual world though: the interaction with the dancefloor is completely different. i dont know if its easier or harder, but its definitely different

    I’m not new to DJ equipment. In fact I’ve owned either turntables or a controller for over 20 years. Despite this I’m just now wanting to play music for others and for the past few weeks I’ve been trying to ask this.
    How do Dj’s craft sets (pick songs to chain together).
    ? I’m not talking about BPM; but more so I’m talking about the flow and energy from one song to the next. The primary genre of music I’ll be playing will be hip Hop RnB reggae funk and soul.
    For some their answer will be, “The crowd will dictate the songs” but that’s not the aim of the question. I’m looking for how they would dictate the flow internally and without a crowd to read or what they as a DJ default to. A great example could be a mix tape or when I’m djing I try to….
    Shhhiiiiddd, is there a better way to ask this question?

    • @djcarlo
      @djcarlo  11 месяцев назад +2

      Ohhhhh, this is an interesting question and may require a ton of different answers, but for me, I usually chain together songs that are in key, carry similar percussion or bass line patterns, and have similar crowd reactions (dancing or singing or both!). But I like to keep my sets open to different genres, so I try making micro-playlists which I can whip out, depending on how the crowd is vibing, and I just really observe what the majority are going nuts to

    This is solid advice to anyone watching this vid...PLEASE READ AND I HOPE YOU TAKE THIS INFO BECAUSE I MESSED UP AND AM PAYING FOR IT RN:
    1)Do NOT download a bunch of songs and immediately start mixing. Start with like 20 here, learn to mix them, 20 there, learn to mix them, and so on. SLOWLY build ur library
    2)Actually probably more important than 1: MAKE SURE ALL AUDIO IS 320kbps and OR HIGHER (e.g. mp4 lossless, FLAC, AIFF, or WAV). USE ONLY 320kbps OR HIGER MP3s IF UR GOING TO USE MP3s
    3) Learn about beat counts or bars: mixing on 16 bar or 32 bar/32 beat or 64 beat of intros and outros, the last chorus of songs, or on builds. Set hot cues/memor cues based off this mostly because it makes mixing easy
    3)Immediately learn camelot codes or circle of fifths (circle is technically better but requires more work) and know how they fit together
    4) Start making edits of your own IMMEDIATELY for songs that dont work real well for mixing or dont have intros and outros
    5)Organize libraries by playlist ideas/moods not necessarily by genres. Analyze energies and how songs might fit where. If you do organize songs by genre, make the genre a master crate and then have moods/energies/timeslots as subcrates
    If you start out IMMEDIATELY checking off these boxes, your life will be SO much easier and you wont have to back and fix your library MULTIPLE times like me🤦‍♂️😥

    (apologies for my English its not my first language) Do you have any advice for not finding music for your set you actually like or is on theme? Like for example i will really like 1 song and make it my core song or starting song for a set. But as i add more songs or play ones with it, it doesn't feel right and just feels like filler songs. Im not sure how to explain it but the sets i perform or make just doesnt feel right. It could be a bit of burnout but I'm not sure

    • @djcarlo
      @djcarlo  Год назад +1

      Hmmm, interesting situation there. If the songs don't feel right, then try looking for other songs that really make you feel happy, or that you actually like. As long as your audience is happy, and the "fillers" are keeping you booked at the venues though, you may want to stick to them as well.

  • @DIKKEPIJP
    @DIKKEPIJP Год назад +1

    Being prepared and having everything organised gives benefits with everything that you do in life.
    Think that for a DJ with bookings could ruin his name faster than most other branches. Example: a tennis player at pro level doesn’t ruins his career by losing a few times. A dj who’s booked but doesn’t prepare his music and make’s a mess of it, could bring his name very quickly down. Preparation brings quality, better quality results with more bookings. It’s harder to build a name than bringing it down. Especially with this digital world where everything goes viral within seconds.

    @DJ CARLO, can you do a video on Quick mixing and why it is important to no matter what music u play underground house music top 40 etc Especially with tiktok and people with Short attention spam People these days don't listen to whole songs because it gets boring.

    • @djcarlo
      @djcarlo  Год назад

      While this is a valid observation, I have to disagree with the reasons behind it. Nowadays, yes, younger clubgoers tend to have a shorter attention span, but it doesn't apply to everyone in the audience. Quick mixing should only be employed if your song doesn't hit right. Otherwise, let a song breathe. Observe your audience. Don't normalize short/quick mixing only, but let educate your audience with the fact that there's more to the song than a chorus.

      @@Sheriffvlogs Yes I am. Nick makes some good points, and I personally practice 2 chorus mixing, but again, it always depends on the crowd. Some folk in my home country go chorus to chorus to chorus ONLY, which I feel is a poor practice. The way I understand quick mixing is one verse - one chorus, which is too fast to create any tension or depth with a song.
      But by far, the one thing I can say, is just let people mix how they want. Underground people will definitely disagree with quick mixing, and some Top 40 DJs will go toe to toe with their music. Different venues call for different styles. Just observe your crowd, see if they're vibing, and decide whether you wanna employ quick mixing or not. The logic though that all people nowadays have short attention span is where I'll need to disagree with you.

    • @Sheriffvlogs
      @Sheriffvlogs Год назад

      @djcarlo I'll probably say it depends on a track by track basis for some tracks. People want to hear the hole track other time. they just want to hear the bit that they know or want Viral on tiktok.

    I have to tell you a little story. I had to perform in a club in Spain. A friend of mine (also DJ) was there too, ready to go on stage. I say to him.....HE Eric, did you hear it yet? Eric says what is it. I say to him......those guys from NASA!!!...... Eric looks at me and says what is wrong with NASA??? I don't understand??... So I say to him. NASA shot a rocket into space with 2 monkeys in it, and they piloted the rocket themselves, flew 3 circles around the Earth, and then flew back independently and landed on Earth. ....Eric looks at me and says .....so what?,. I continue my story, there is more, I say. listen ..... I'll go ahead and tell him ..... Well those guys from NASA had a 3rd monkey but he didn't come along because there wasn't enough space in the rocket. And then they taught that monkey to singronize records because otherwise that monkey had nothing to do. And what is the case now. he has to play records after you. because he has become the main act. I say to Erik.....good luck guy, make something great tonight.. I had to laugh and Erik laughed too. But that evening Erik did not perform as well as he normally would. He said to me later that evening that he kept having the thought of that monkey in his head... I had distracted his concentration with that. And that is of course a NO NO
