    Yes, I will be doing a big chop soon. This is not like bleach or heat damage - this is chemical. You can't bounce back from that. I just wish that my new hair growth was normal though.... It's growing out wiry and grey. I believe my scalp is permanently damaged.

      I did a big chop recently, I thought all of my issues were from having babies. My curls at the nape of my neck (supposedly the healthiest) are S’wavy!!! I was born with 3c Botticelli curls.
      This is crazy. FDA needs to get on board like European laws. I don’t know who to trust anymore. Greed at the root of all this mess. Just make honest products, aren’t billions of dollars enough money? Always cutting corners. Just let honesty pave the path.

    I never touched a bottle of DevaCurl, but I'm angry for every person that had their identity, hardwork and possibly health damaged by a negligent company. To everyone that has suffered: I pray that every wave, curl, and coil comes back with more life than you can imagine. The length is restored at twice the original speed and your health improves following this disaster.

      Meagan Sanders wow I’m so sorry my whole life I absolutely loved curly hair I always loved it. Anyone who ever made you feel ugly for your beautiful hair was absolutely jealous . And jealousy turns to hatred. And when people hate they say cruel and mean things. All those people are suffering with personal insecurities. They said those things because they don’t like themselves. Tearing you down gave them a sense of pride , which was self defense for their own self pity. They were completely in the wrong for that. And now here are all these women wishing they had your hair . Crazy isn’t it !! Much love to you 🙏🏼💖

      Talia Salemi, I understand your upset to a point. Your Mom was wise to tell you "no" to using DevaCurl products. I'm sure as a hair dresser, she knew to first check the ingredients printed on the products. Researching beauty products of any kind doesn't require being a cosmetology expert. It only requires reading the ingredients and looking them up to know if they are helpful or harmful to your body. Ayesha Malik did not have her hair "taken away from her without her own doing" as you stated in your comment. Ayesha responsibly admitted on her videos to viewers that she used DevaCurl products for years without double-checking the ingredients until she began to experience its harmful effects. One of the smartest choices she's made following her painful experience is to use it as an example of what NOT to do. Education is key to empowerment! Buyer beware: read and research your beauty product ingredients before use ALWAYS!!! Ms. ECstreet :)

My hair only looks good after washing for a couple hours and I see frizz when it is wet. Putting in so much work so that your hair will look good but then it turning into a frizzy ball with lifeless curl/wave things. I know my hair should be getting a least ringlets but I'm only getting weird curl waves. Looking at pictures from her hair before just saddens my heart so much, I can't believe it. So much so that ALL the victims affected that I heard from so far blamed their own hair texture, diet, literally ANYTHING before blaming the brand. In addition, the damage is so bad that even after stopping devacurl it clearly remains, so a lot of victims may have stopped using the brand and continued to think it was because of something else because their hair's/scalp's condition didn't change much.

I tried other products and it didn't make any difference so I would go back to DC since I was convinced it is what gave me the best results out of it all. For the past 2.5 years, I have tried more and more products, gotten multiple trims, even a Deva cut, and nothing has given me the several days of curls I once got from DC. I don't have scalp damage but I do now absolutely think there is something that changed my hair. I never not once considered DC was the issue at play and instead thought it was just my hair being difficult. Had I not seen her first video here about why she wasn't recommending DC anymore then I might not have learned about it when I did (because I didn't really follow curly hair channels here) and am just so glad it popped into my feed.

    Interesting that deva is taking returns from products all the way to 2017... sounds like they know they switched something back in 2017. They're not even asking if it was from a verified retailer's, they just want the product out circulation that could hurt them. If you have been damaged by their products, DO NOT send them to deva curl; send them to a third party testing facility, and contact those in charge of the class action lawsuit, they can help you get your faulty products to the right facilities.

    TAKE THEIR ASSES TO COURT!! I'm a law student and you should definitely sue for this. High chance you'll win the case and get compensated with $$ for all the damages.

    • @52hello25
      @52hello25 4 года назад +40

      Yes, they will definitely win the case. I used to work in claims administration and I wanted to share some info in case anyone with DevaCurl damage is reading this: there's a very high likelihood that this case is going to take 3+ years before any settlements are paid out because they will need to conduct an independent investigation and court processes take a long time.
      If you have damage, whether to your hair or scalp or skin, take pictures of it NOW. Make sure that the date and time is set in your camera so the attorneys can prove that those pictures were taken during the time you were using DevaCurl.
      Keep all of your DevaCurl products. If you have receipts to prove that you purchased your products, keep those receipts too (if you don't, don't worry, you still have the products).
      If you are experiencing issues like headaches, skin disease, scalp burns, etc go to a doctor and get it checked out. The court will ask for your medical records, so it is necessary that you show proof that your physical ailments were addressed by a doctor. Make sure you see a doctor now. If you discontinue use of the products and then see a doctor later and DevaCurl's lawyers find out, there's a possibility that you can lose out on getting a higher settlement amount. Don't leave room for that possibility. The highest settlement amounts are paid out to people who have incurable medical problems due to exposure to the defendant's products.
      --
      In my personal opinion, what Ayesha is describing (headaches, incurable skin problems) sounds eerily similar to a case I worked on where all plaintiffs had been exposed to a carcinogen. Obviously I don't know if this is the case for DevaCurl, but I wanted to state this just in case anyone isn't convinced that they should discontinue use of their DevaCurl products. I know that most complaints have been about the No Poo line, but I would not recommend using ANY of their products until a proper investigation in done to determine their toxicity levels.
      Also, to those who keep insisting that the ingredients list is fine so the victims must be lying: No. I worked with class-action injury lawsuits for a long time. This is what it looks like when a product contains a toxic contaminant. At the beginning of a class-action lawsuit, it's typical for consumers to appear to be out of their mind because of the health problems they claim they are suffering from. Nobody believes them. But as soon as the results of an independent investigation are found, 99% of the time those "wild" claims that the consumers had were confirmed to be true. So stop accusing people of lying about this. Stop telling these women that they aren't being logical or scientific. Stop telling people they are being hysterical. They are probably right about everything.

      @OGSumo 4 года назад

      Megan Druschel I guess you’re right and I should have been more clear/specific. I should have specified that it’s only applicable to drugs and not do you not need to inherently abuse them.
      Although, the normal dosages of most medications are designed to avoid drug dependency, so for certain drugs you need to step outside those boundaries to actually become dependent. Or they need to abruptly stop the medication to experience the actual withdrawal effects since usually the physician will ween them off, avoiding most of the withdrawal symptoms, if not all, but that is not true for all drugs.
      To be fair, when I said “usually associated” I had in mind the layperson’s definition and verbiage, where most people often associate it with illegal drugs and abuse. That still doesn’t excuse the misinformation though.Thank you for mentioning and correcting me

    When I saw that Dr. Dray uploaded that “dermatologist reacts to devacurl scandal” I was fuming. I know that this isn’t caused by “not properly washing hair.” I use to deep clean with buildup buster wondering why my scalp was STILL irritated after using it, why was my scalp still flaking?? I’d have to wash my hair every two days. I had just started using devacurl in July 2019 (when I had just cut my hair) and I was blaming my hair problems on stress. It was so easy to trust devacurl because of its marketing. All a curly haired person wants is a line to trust. From shampoo to styling products. At first it worked for me, so I fell in love with it, now I’m wondering why my curls are harder to style and are losing their shape, are more frizzy, why my scalp is experiencing irritation. It is not because I am not washing my hair correctly. If you do not have curly hair, you have no idea what it feels like to finally accept your hair, to have society accept your hair, and work hard for your hair, to have it all taken away from you.

      Ashley YES! I had to unsubscribe to her after that. There was so much misinformation and lack of research on her part it left a really bad taste in my mouth. Especially since she is considered an “expert” and people will take her word on these things without knowing any better. I had a whole comment typed up on her video but decided to leave it be because I’m not looking to argue with people who can’t even take the time to inform themselves on what they feel entitled to speak on. No one will understand these things if they haven’t lived it... especially if they can’t be bothered to research it. But it had a very strong undertone of gaslighting and I’m not here for any of that. How can anyone blame it on “co washing” when so many of us don’t do that and/or only used the styling products?? The argument doesn’t even begin to hold water but it seems so many are just wanting to jump on the bandwagon for RUclips views to benefit from others painful experiences and then they’re on to the next thing to get them views. It was disappointing to say the very least.

      Dr. Dray's video is true for many though. There are hundreds of women and men for whom devacurl still works wonders. That's not to say it's not there aren't issues with it but Deva curl stopped working for me and had almost a relaxer effect on my hair. I used sulfated shampoos to recover and clarify. Yes, it worked. Buildup buster is NOT a sulfate product and there are way to many essential oils in it to actually cleanse the scalp without potentially causing an allergic/inflammatory reaponse. I'm not saying Devacurl isn't a damage inducing product at all because it has for me as well. I'm saying people who have been following a strick CGM method have seen this exact type of damage and I think it has to do with the "natural" components of many many curly hair products which are often allergenic and destructive in the long run. This is NOT to diminish the victims of decacurl but it is definitely a caution to those are strict CGM and do not use sulfated shampoos ever.

    • @kaiceyy
      @kaiceyy 4 года назад +8

      Allie M I agree. I feel there are issues with the CG method and other products as well. Personally, I have to use shampoo. I tried to stick strictly to the method but I had to find ways to adapt it to my life and hair. Unfortunately, CGM and especially many fb groups dedicated to it have such a cult-like mindset, deviating from it in the slightest is majorly frowned upon and will lead some to even attack you for speaking your own truth. But my issue with Dr. Dray’s video is yes, it may be true for some. Many or most even. But to present it as the ONLY explanation and to dismiss any other possibility is irresponsible. To dismiss all of our experiences who are seeing issues without even being bothered to do a simple internet search to see how deep this stuff runs... It left me questioning so many other things she states as fact and if she does as little background work on those too. I feel she has her textbook based knowledge and isn’t open to considering anything outside of what is an easy answer. Like many doctors unfortunately. They’re quick to throw things at a problem without truly listening to the patient’s symptoms or concerns. Without ever going back to see if things have changed recently or there’s new research that makes the things they learned outdated. But if you have time to make RUclips videos and speak from a place of true educated knowledge, I expect more research. If I can quickly and easily see through her superficial explanation and realize she did no digging for any of her opinions... I have to question how reliable of a source she is for other things as well. I feel like it was a missed opportunity to educate herself and her audience if she was choosing to speak on these topics that she obviously has no first hand knowledge of. As a doctor I expected her to focus more on the health concerns but I can only assume being a dermatologist, her expertise is limited to the skin concerns. You would think someone who personally is dealing with thinning hair would at least be a bit more empathetic, though.

    I worked as a hair model at a Hair show in 2018, DevaCurl was set up right across from the company I was working for. The stylist that I was working with (who has done my hair since I was a young child) was telling me about how dangerous their products were (well are). There need to be laws regulating what goes into hair products and their packaging. I downloaded the app you were mentioned about last time and it’s shocking how common these dangerous chemicals are.

    • @elisazolo5762
      @elisazolo5762 4 года назад +13

      There are lots and lots of regulations. Chemicals aren`t the problem, everything is a chemical, even water. That app is the worst, so misleading and anti scientific. I think the problem may have been that DevaCurl changed formulations without disclosing it

    • @MyCrystalSwan
      @MyCrystalSwan 4 года назад +10

      @@elisazolo5762 You've got a point there: the term "chemical" seems often way overused and abused. And also, I haven't tried the app myself (I'm Italian and here we use another one for more or less the same purpose) but so far what seems wrong with it to me is the terminology itself: why be so extreme and call an ingredient "dirty"? It's just chemicals, taken singularly it's just an ingredient; Yes, it may be "polluting and/or potentially dangerous for the hair and skin" but going about calling it "dirty" seems to me like wanting to appeal to the most immediate emotional of people. If anything is dirty is the intentions or negligence of who let the products with those potentially harmful ingredients out for, of course, profit.
      Also pt.2, there may be tons of regulations as you say, but still, compared to Europe.. It just sounds like it's less strict and safe, honestly. I don't know how people can trust the products they use there
      And yeah, it's obviously really sneaky and bad to change your formula without disclosing it

    • @elisazolo5762
      @elisazolo5762 4 года назад +6

      @@MyCrystalSwan yes! I totally agree that using the word "dirty" is extreme to say the least. I don't know about regulations in Europe, I'm actually from Argentina, and it's not clear what are the regulations here. As far as I know, we can buy european sunscreens, which I know are diferent (and better) from the ones in the US due to US regulations. Anyways, I don't think the so called "dirty" ingredients are the culprit of the hair damage, but we'll have to wait the results of lab tests

Thank god my hairs thick so if you don’t know me you can’t tell. I’ve been blaming my problems on bleaching (haven’t bleached my hair in over 6 months) and the dry winter season, but guess what I recently cashed out on cause my regular beauty supply was closing down? BOXES FULL OF DEVACURL!! So I was using the whole line, the no poo kit, whipped curl foam, pomade, leave-in conditioner, everything. Idk what this did to my hair, but it’s so damaged that my hair still feels dry and crunch even when it’s wet with my go-to mask STILL IN IT. My hairs so bad now that right out the shower my bf asked me if I straightened my hair. I almost cried. The first time I used the no poo I noticed the burning immediately I thought it was infused w mint but guess what? My hair is thin now, it used to be so thick and healthy. I have a hard time not tearing up just thinking about the damage. A lot of people are experiencing damage just from the styling products but she ignored all of that and just said it’s build up? Build up doesn’t completely erase a curl pattern just ridiculous. Now more people will feel “crazy” if they want to speak out. A doctor should know better.

      To be honest, I believe what she said about scalp build up. It made sense to me. I’ve was struggling with scalp issues and hair loss since starting CGM, despite never using DevaCurl before. Once I started clarifying with sulfates more often and using tea tree oil my scalp has been healthier.
      I agree that she didn’t look at all the issues though and didn’t explain change of hair texture. There definitely seems to be a lot more going on with DevaCurl, but in my experience, scalp issues can be caused by not clarifying regularly.

      Of course it is wrong to dismiss everyone with damage from DevaCurl, and people DO clean their scalps properly and still end up with damage. However, I will say when I first started getting into curly hair care, I tried only using co-washes and steering away from any real shampoo and I experienced a lot of scalp pain and itching after a few weeks. "Clarifying" rinses with ACV and scalp massages with oil did not stop the pain. I eventually decided that no poo was not for me and switched to a gentle shampoo with lather and this went away.

    I was a die hard DevaCurl user. I put my mom and cousins onto Deva (everyone except for my mom has stopped using it). About 2-3 years ago Deva stopped working for me and even damaged my curls! This felt completely out of the blue for absolutely no reason at all. I rationalized that it couldn't be the Deva, but other products I was using/trying with the Deva. I stopped using the extra products and only Deva, which made my hair WORSE! I stopped using DevaCurl all together and wouldn't you know my curls slowly came back, but not fully. I thought I was crazy and I was the only one.

      Same here!! I was religiously using Deva back in 2014, in late 2016/early 17 I found that my hair was getting limp and wavy instead of the tight curls I had. I continued to use it because I thought it was because I moved from the UK back to Canada and blamed it on the climate. Early 2018 I stopped using Devacurl no poo and conditioner because it wasn't getting any better.... halfway through 2018 I was getting scalp sores at the nape of my neck every time I was using their gel. Now in 2020, I still have sores time to time and my hair is nowhere near where it used to be. I am just glad I wasn't the only one as every curly girl I spoke to around me was calling me crazy.
