  • AI is making strong inroads into gaming. In particular for NPC dialogue. Nvidia recently released an article on a cloud service they're working on and I wanted to dig a little deeper into what benefits it will bring to the table but also what the drawbacks are.

Honestly i think you're underestimating the possibilities with an engine designed to facilitate NPC interaction. Current models don't send flags to interface with game mechanics, but we've seen similar systems built into LLM to trigger different facial expressions, animated actions etc. based on how the model is "feeling" at that stage of the conversation.
For example, the background NPCs could have their generated discussion using info generated by your playthrough, and then if they got into an argument over it, the model could send a flag that they've gotten aggresive enough to fight and the brawl could take place in-game. You can also trip information flags - take a classic mystery quest where tou need further information to confront someone, an astute player might be able to indentify hints and interrogate an AI powered NPC to tell him the right info, and then once it has been told to the player, the appropriate check can be passed to allow the confrontation.
Not to mention reporting crimes to guards to sic them on people, live social relationships between NPC that you can meddle with etc.
All of this is possible now with a custom model built for gaming, and thats just scratching the surface. Dont mistake what a modder doing a proof of concept woth a generic model can do for what you could do with an industry behind it

I think those are very good predictions for what the system will evolve into in the long term. At the moment it's based on scripting, so it's a simple reaction to the game's directives. So something like the game giving the AI engine a direction that the NPC is concerned and get back the appropriate facial expressions.
I agree that in the long term the next step in the evolution will be to have a dynamic system where reactions and counter reactions will not be scripted. So the AI showing concern might lead to a request to help from the player, which then triggers a dynamic (i.e. not scripted) AI reaction to that. Or the player might get aggressive, which might trigger a different dynamic response from the AI.
It won't be trivial but it's the logical next step. Dynamic AI systems interacting to each other and reacting in a lifelike manner (IMHO the most difficult part) will be tried. In the long term it's the likely outcome.
But a lot of the concerns I have are about how such an AI system would work rather than about the AI itself. So for instance, you need an always online system to have such dynamic AI behaviour.
Another issue is that for such a system to have meaning it will have to provide the player with meaningful interaction. A key weakness of such systems are that they don't really matter. So what if an NPC has dynamically generated dialogue? Or even gets into a fistfight? The issue is that players know that these are random events, ultimately they don't matter. It's the same issue that Bethesda "radiantAI" quests have, they give the player things to do but they just don't matter.
Once you get to the point where AI can generate meaningful quests that change the gameworld then AI will take over. But the thrust of the video is that in the short to medium term AI will not change things significantly, nevermind the hype.
Once we're looking at AI cards, like the graphics cards we have now, and a much more developed AI then gaming will dramatically change, but that's a LONG time away IMHO.

it could drastically lower the price of game production since developers can save a lot of money from not hiring voice actors, and a solution for the price would be to record the dialogue and insert it to the game and immediately after cancel subscription

Yup, that's the "practical solution" I talked about in the last section. It'll give us the same result that we have now, i.e. NPCs repeating the same lines, but the cost will be a lot lower so small teams will benefit from that.
