  • Video of me catching lots of baby peacock bass on a bare hook in South Florida. You can see me catch at least 25 peacock bass in less than 13 minutes and 24 seconds. Baby peacock bass are extremely voracious and will eat almost anything that moves quick in front of them that is small enough for them to swallow. I have caught largemouth bass, peacock bass, and many other fish on a bare hook for over 20 years and this is the first time I posted it on RUclips. I enjoy micro fishing for tiny fish like you see in this video as much as the big sharks I have caught while doing land based shark fishing. All peacock bass were quickly released after catching them. I will post more fishing videos in the next couple of months.

A lot of South Fl fish such as young bass and some adult bass are really hungry! They’ll go after whatever moves, I notice a lot of small cichlids hides since there so much predators, I hardly seen any open water fish such as Shads, golden shiners, chub suckers etc … except the brook silverside or inland silverside, these young peacock bass thinking that bare hook is a silverside and that’s why it’s going after it

@darebear4749 Thank you for watching! I am happy you enjoyed the video. A lot of fish will eat whatever they think is edible, even if it is a bare hook. I agree there are times bass will eat almost anything. I have caught large bass on cut bait and hot dogs while fishing for other species. You can also catch saltwater fish on a bare hook, especially pelagic fish that have not seen many baits with hooks.
It is possible these baby peacock bass thought the bare hook was some type of baitfish, and that is why they bit the bare hook. Small fish tend to hide from larger fish, you can still find them near the shore, in aquatic vegetation, and near structure. For example, jewel cichlids can often be found around rocks and aquatic vegetation close to the shore.

@@Grouperhunter Thank you for respond, of course a lot of fish will eat whatever, But I notice Miami Canals and some lakes don’t have bunch of mosquito fish at the shore areas for a young bass to get a easy snack on, many times they miss due to mosquito fish jumping tricks to escape the predator, but I can tell you this … I have seen a Peacock bass pair took their bigger juveniles at the surface hunting the brook silversides (them stripped glass fish at the surface) that gave me the reason why them baby bass went after your hook cause it’s similar the same color as them brook silverside, their parents interduce them for hunting, I’ve witness that several times.
Yes I’ve seen Jewel cichlids at the shorelines around rocks/vegetation, I always see them, they are awesome to watch, especially at breeding time, they are so brave going after the young largemouth so aggressively if they get too close to their broods, Black Acaras too! lol Especially here in Orlando, FL

@darebear4749 You are welcome. Yes, it is possible these baby peacock bass thought the bare hook was a silverside or mosquitofish, that may be why they bit the bare hook. I have caught silversides in the Everglades and other areas, along with golden topminnows, mosquitofish, and other small fish. The place I was fishing in this video has a large population of mosquitofish, which is probably one of the main fish baby peacock bass eat in this place.
Jewel cichlids are very brave when they are spawning, which has helped them reproduce in large numbers in Florida. I have caught jewel cichlids from South Florida to Central Florida, they are capable of living in colder temperatures than a lot of the exotic fish in South Florida. Black acara cichlids are another interesting cichlid species, I have caught them in Miami-Dade County. Dimerus cichlids (Cichlasoma dimerus) are found in the Orlando area and are similar in appearance to black acara cichlids. With that said, it is impressive how far North cichlids are living in Florida.
