  • Well what a fantastic experience I have had over on the East Coast photographing these short-eared owls at Benton Cliffs.
I met my good friend Alan Tweeny over there first thing on Monday morning in the car park. Where he greeted me with a fantastic cup of hot chocolate to start the day off.
We decided to head over to the North End of Bempton Cliffs. Which we felt was the most likely area for the owls. To go hunting and flying over as it was short grass. Under very well-camouflaged area. After a few hours, the owls made an appearance, flying low over the grass and diving in occasionally in the hope of grabbing a vole.
Tracking the birds with the camera. Was not easy. As the birds dipped up and down, behind the grass is and. That colour blends in so well with the surrounding scenery that losing tracking. It was just a constant struggle all the time.
However, we did manage to get some good photos and some excellent video footage of these birds flying around Bempton Cliffs.
The shorted owls do migrate from Scandinavia, Russia and Iceland. To the UK for winter. As it is slightly warmer over here.
But what another fantastic wildlife photography adventure? I've just been on and witnessed these beautiful, short-eared owls. Up close and in the wild.

Im absolutely sure I saw a short eared owl at Attenborough nature reserve Nottinghamshire today! Very briefly and I’m not terribly experienced but my ID book backs up my conviction! I’ll have to have a trip to Bempton cliffs to try and see them again!

I thought it looked like a female sparrowhawk in the clip myself ,but short eared owls were fantastic

Tend to agree, same size as the Carrion Crow mobbing it and too long tailed for Merlin

Nice video Ashley 👍. I need to get across to Bempton sooner than later to see and hopefully photograph the SEO's. I bumped into Alan at Studley Royal Deer Park , Fountains Abbey probs a few days before this video! Gave him a few tips and directions re the Deer there, found out through chatting that we both had a common past. (Now subscribed to your channel. Keep up the great work.

What a thrill for you, Ashley, and what a thrill for us. Extraordinary footage of shorties (R5 serving you well). Never will see these owls ourselves, it's wonderful the trouble you go to, to share. Absolute stunning image of the sunset with flock of birds. ATB from Western Australia. (We are blessed with seeing flocks of waders arriving every year.)

Shorties are just great. Great video Ashley, great footage - especially the sequence near the end with 3 of them, just WOW. I was shocked when you pointed out the couple deliberately flushing birds out, scandalous behaviour. In my latest video (have a look if you like) i was visiting my local big reserve (Attenborough NR) and came across some guy feeding birds from his hand and putting food on a gate post...ok, doesnt sound controversial you may say...but next to the post, and all around were signs 'do not feed the birds due to local outbreaks of bird flu'...I even pointed it out FFS.

Are you sure it was a Merlin, looked more like. Peregrine and they are often seen in that location hunting around and perching on those derelict buildings. I thought Merlins were smaller, but similar to Kestrels?

    • @WildlifePhotographerUK

Hi Yeh I think the grey bird weas the peregrine, it had not dawned on me to be that bird, the second bird that flew past with the brown back, slow motion not to sure.

Small point, you have your lens mounted too high on your Gimbal head, the lens should be adjusted on the rising platform so the middle of the lens lines up with the pivot point. It will be smoother to operate when aligned this way.

Hello Ashley,it was nice to meet you up in bempton, enjoyed looking at your video.but the comment as regards me and my wife " flushing out " the birds, a merlin,or sparrowhawk came down,i didn't know what!!, That was the reason my wife walked across.in hindsight,in today's catrostaphy with what is happening to nature,it wasn't the Wise's thing to do, just by the fact,if one person does it, everybody else follows.and who asn't push the limits to id a bird,or get the photo!!.the annoying thing Ashley with your video reference is that, you didn't take into account me and my wife's love, and respect for nature.im 60 yrs old, and have got grt pleasure from it,from being a child.thats why i take afence with your comment,it was hurtful.i know your love for nature is strong to, that comes across in your videos .. neil and Julie.

Hi Neil & Julie thanks for the comment, I did not reference you or call you by name i mealy stated a couple, you say that in hindsight it was not the wise thing to do, I agree. I am sorry you took offence, it is not meant to be offensive, just pointing out that it was wrong and hopefully others will keep that in mind in the future, and not do as others are seen to do. We all make a mistakes now and then and hopefully learn from them. Anyway all the best and hope you got some great photos on your trip. thanks .👍

Totally agree with calling out this behaviour and don't think anyone was unfairly singled out or named and shamed so feel like it was done correctly. If we are to enjoy being in the presence of wildlife then we must do it responsibly, respectfully and without disturbing it
