      The Submarine Force saved me as well. I'm just pointing out the fact that whenever we pulled to Port Everglades / Fort Liquordale, we always got a lot more respect and interest from the public than Targets ever did. EVERYONE wanted to tour a Fast-Attack; very few cared enough to stand in line waiting to tour a DD or FF, so I can't imagine any difference for a Gator Target - Flagship or not.

    I saw a couple of young men in a Florida department store some years ago. I could tell just from their "cut" that they were in the military. One of them had on a tee shirt that displayed on the front a Trident nuclear sub bursting from the depths and a logo that said. "The most powerful weapon in the world". And on the back was the same sub with the logo: "And I get to clean it".

    My grandfather was a 20-year "mess hall specialist" on the aircraft carrier USS Constellation. His brother used to joke that he (my grandpa) was the most powerful, most popular guy aboard the boat. We just kinda laughed along with what we thought was just two brothers joking around. But the day he retired, the boat held a going away luncheon for him in Coronado. Hundreds of current and former shipmates showed up...as did several XOs, COs, and Captains. They all gave him a Lazy BOy recliner...a bunch of Scotch...and a really cool plaque. I'll never forget that luncheon. He really WAS the most popular guy on the carrier! (BTW--he was a damn fine cook...he prepared/supervised lots of family dinners/parties/picnics in retirement)

    • @CYBERVISIONSdotCom
      @CYBERVISIONSdotCom 2 года назад

      @David Robinson PH was a pretty tight rate to get into if I remember right. The only problem in a rate that has a small community is that you’ll never advance as fast as you hope. If you want to advance fast, front line combat vessels / duty is your best option. Still….a career in photography? Should’ve stayed in Brother. Check my YT background photo.

    • @davidwendelrobinson
      @davidwendelrobinson 2 года назад

      @@CYBERVISIONSdotCom Well that is somewhat true, but it also depends on when. Nowadays it is pretty tough to advance in the MC (Mass Communications) rating I understand. But I entered the navy as a PHAN because I had an associates degree in photography. I advanced to PH2 in just over 3 years. Faster then most but I had skills and knowledge some didn’t. That and I managed not to piss of any Master Chiefs. Still regret not making it my career. I could have become as at least a chief, and with a bit of luck and not getting in trouble, maybe even Master Chief. No matter what, still the best job I ever had and the dumbest thing I did was to leave the Navy for dreams of commercial photography success that never happened. Wish I knew then what I know now. But like they say hindsight is always 20/20.

      STS3 - Sonar Tech, Subsurface
      as opposed to my rating, STG3 - Sonar Tech, Surface
      we're picky about the distinction, we don't want to be confused with the bubbleheads

    • @CYBERVISIONSdotCom
      @CYBERVISIONSdotCom 2 года назад

      @@RobGrognerd It's not "Subsurface" douchebag; You don't even know the history of the Rate split, much less the meaning of your own des. STS is Sonar Technician (Submarines), or in my case STS1(SS).
      As for not being confused with Submariners, having witnessed a Skimmer Shack try to track a fast-attack (boxed & rigged), I can say with absolute honesty and 100% certainty that STG's will NEVER be confused with, or be mistaken for STS's.
      Honestly, I was embarrassed to be there as a CNO Observer. I was the only trained person in the shack with Spook experience aboard at the time; not once did the Sup even think or bother to ask me anything, and he clearly needed input. But he was either too stupid or stubborn to ask, a trait I've noticed with most STG's.
      And "Picky" my ass; STG's simply don't want anyone to know they're in the 98% group, and STS's are in the 2% group. An STG will never have to worry about failing somewhere in the training pipeline and being dumped into the Submarine Force. But for STS's? That constant threat of failing and winding up on a Target as a result was a very real possibility - and a good motivator.
      But of course that's why we're in the 2%, and Skimmers are in the other 98%.

    • @andystack2602
      @andystack2602 2 года назад +2

      No one gets seasick once you’re underwater. But when transiting on the surface to get out to sea or heading back, it can be rough depending on the waves and weather. Submarines obviously aren’t built for surface transit, so the impact of the conditions is greater than a surface ship of the same size. I was stationed in Pearl Harbor where the surface transits are short and the weather normally good. Groton, CT has a notoriously long surface transit to get to and from open ocean with much rougher weather, so those sailors are more likely to get sea sick.

    Alternate #1 number 1: "Close quarters in the shower". Alternate #1 number 2: "A genuine opportunity to master your claustrophobia." Choose.

      Could be; Skunk Works will go to great lengths to avoid doing a contract for Navy hardware. But, they will take an Air Force contract, any day of the week, and twice on Sunday.

    You can fly above the speed of sound in an F16, try doing that on a boat!

      Old story - An F-16 pulls up alongside a Navy P-3 Orion. They establish comms, and the F-16 jock says, "Watch this!" He proceeds to go full afterburner, does some aileron rolls, an inside loop, and an Immelman, then rolls up back alongside the P-3. The P-3 pilot says, "OK, watch this!" The two planes fly straight and level for several minutes, then the P-3 pilot says, "Well, what do think?" The jet jock says, "About what? What did you do?" The P-3 driver says, "Well, I got up out of my seat, went back to the head and took a leak, went to the galley and made myself a sandwich, ate it, and drank a cup of coffee while I read a Playboy!"

      You can not sail under the polar ice cap in an F16.
