This is a text book dog training lesson with Roux the border collie puppy! Roux listens pretty well, but at 5 months old, she’s still inconsistent when it comes to listening in distracting situations.
If you want your dog to listen to you in situations they find distracting you have to prepare them for these occasions. I’ll show you two easy training exercises you can do to start building solid communication between you and your dog.
Videos I reference in this video:
How to teach your dog to listen around anything, even vacuum cleaners: • How to Get Your Dog to...
How to teach your dog to fetch perfectly: • Everything YOU NEED to...

*me coming here after my dog ignores me for a day*
Mine too well for a week but ey...
My dog always ignores me...
@@user-not-found.0hh oh no!
My dogs always ignored me
Omg me too I was so tempted to yell and even hit them out of absolute frustration .. so I took a breather, now in the washhouse having a ciggy and looking for help. Instead of losing the plot.
I love Zak's reaction when Rue immediately comes to Anna with no problem. "what?! are you serious?" hahaha
Abdullah Almousalli *roux*
you're the reason I got the confidence to get a dog, thank you so much for these videos!!
Danielle Manziello how come?
love how zak trains without intimidation or bullying the dogs. just shows how it isn't necessary. Biggest challenge for Zak.... teach other dog trainers to use this technique!!!
I'm so thankful for these videos. I just adopted my first dog. She's 9 months old and grew up in a shelter. Because of these videos she now knows: her name, sit, lay, stay, and come! We're still working on keeping these up when we're on walks, and perfecting her leash walking. But I just wanted to say thank you for making these videos. They've helped me tremendously!
it's really a help when you tell the kind of dog you're working with.
I love your videos because you approach training in a completely positive way this is the way dogs are supposed to be trained keep it up zak
Thanks Zak! I just goy my puppy a few days ago. I have been reviewing your vides for the past few months so I know what to expect with training. I really love your tips and technique on positive training. I also have been sharing your videos and talking about your methods with other dog owners. Thank you so much for your videos it means a lot to me and my friends who are also learning to train their old and new dogs through your videos. Hopefully, I can show my support through Patreon soon! Looking forward for your future videos!

My jermam Shephard pup is really listing and she know many tricks thanks to you
Thank you
Roo is such a peach!! Her Mumma is amazing with her. The clip of her holding on to the toy and sliding over the floor ....AAAAWWW!!
I’m really struggling with my dog lately with her listening. I’m trying to not get overwhelmed because I know it’s up to me to teach her so I’m looking into your videos. I found your potty training ones very helpful with her..
brilliant vid. hope to use the fetch training on my little sprocket - she has the chase going on, but is happy to leave it and finds something else to interest her. Nice one.
My puppy learnt fetch on his own!!! I have trained with him a bit more just to clean up the bringing back the toy but I am very proud of him as I have only had him for a week and am able to teach him stay with distractions and hopefully one day he will sit and wait for his food as he loves his food
Come on let's get Zak to 1,000,000 subscribers
I love this dog!!
Your a good dog trainer 🐶🐕🐾
I sure wish PetFlow delivered in Canada! I'd be all over that option. :)
Zak, you are a God send, I have a 16 week border collie who is extremely intelligent and loves to learn, but is sometimes like a wilful child. your video's have helped me tremendously and I look forward to learning more. Do you think you might do a video on agility training ?
Aww Rue! I love Border Collies! My bf and I are getting a Boxer in a few weeks.
You are just amazing
This guys training videos are so good. It makes it even better that he's from Louisiana too.
Another great video...my corgis are in the same group as the border collies. They are in the hearding group and are very active. Thumbs up again
***** Thanks snowballs!
She is one cute Border Collie. Love the eyes!!!
I have a 4 and a half months old BC, I taught her to fetch when she was just 3 months old. I've never expected it to be so easy, but when you put in the time, results will come
Exactly. It’s simple. They just need your time 💕
My dog is so nervous and won’t listen if there’s anything around that distracts her! She’s refusing to go outside at night and we’re working on it everyday! She’s a rescue and was abused (someone tried to cut her tail off and hit her in the head and then she developed cancer) I’ve watched so many of these videos for help and I appreciate all tips!!
Zak... You should have more subcribers... Your videos are so well made! Makes me so happy to see them! :)
+Purpleglace Thank you:)
So true!
JustAOldAcc 👍
first steps to training a dog
My silky terrier is very well behaved because I’ve watched your videos for years and taught my dog as a puppy. However, I have a doggie daycare and boarding and I get many dogs that are defiant, disobedient, and bark all the time. I’m trying to train other people’s dogs for the short time they’re with me, it’s not easy. Thank you for your videos.
Best RUclipsr ever!
I laughed really hard at 3:24. I love this puppy.
she is so good
I dont have a dog, but i still love your videos sooo much!

Zak, Our coonhound got away this morning and would not come back we've had the hardest time teaching him come, he wont come for treats, toys, happy up-beat calls or car rides and constantly ignores us in several situations . When I came onto youtube the first three videos I saw on my wall were come & stay, how to get your dog to stop ignoring you and why your dog wont listen to you outside and how to change it, you/youtube must have known the morning I've had
Well, you asked.... I'm becoming an R+ trainer due to growing up with a dog aggressive dog. A punitive/abusive home environment did no good for either of us. Thankfully, he never got into a scrap with another dog; we were vigilant about monitoring his behavior while he was out and managing his contact with other animals. Had my parents bothered to neuter him, his attitude toward other male dogs may have been different; but, times were different then, and he never got the chance to really be a "good boy" in all the ways he could have.
So, thanks for what you do. :) We're the humans; it's up to us to make the decisions that will keep our pets safe and happy. Your videos make that easier for a lot of people. Keep up the good work.
she is so darn adorable
This is cool
Omg this dog is so. Cute!!!!!!! 😍
♥️♥️♥️♥️
This fetching stuff could really help my doggo, even my new puppy that we got, they’re both border collies.
You're video's are good
You need waaaaaaaaaaaaaay more subscribers! !!!!
Subscribed. Got a german shephers pup. Shes 9 months old. Trying to teach her stuff but its tough. Watching these vids makes this a whole lot easiers or even possible haha.
Bruce Sweeney my 9 weeks German shepherd doesn't listen to me and bites me what i can do can you help
Carol Bashour hmm shes quite young i wouldnt panic! You still got time to make her kick the habits. Watching these vids will help you alot! As the guy mentioned in the vids. The dog has to understand you first before yoi can start teaching it stuff.
Carol Bashour about the play biting there are a few ways to teach her to quit. One is emmiting a loud yelp and let your bitten hand go limp. This may kind of scare the dog for a second cause it thinks it just hurt you and will less likely do it again. The other is perhaps putting alot of quarters in a tin can and shake it wildly when it does something you dont like. It will suprise the dog and discourage it from doing the wrong thing again. But again. This is something that takes time and you have to stay on top of it
SUPER
I'm kind of biased to seeing a Border Collie in a training video. I've had mine for a month now and she's out performing any of my other dogs (she's like a machine, built to learn). So when I see this, I think to myself that using a Border Collie is like using a pro athlete to train a basic sport activity. (super easy mode)
I really like the videos. I'm really encouraged to pursue more advanced things with my dogs now that you've taught me how to use good motivation to tune them in. After watching about 25 of your videos in a row, I see a lot of things I can improve on. You've given me much awareness on the behaviors used in training.
thumbs up Roux
I have the perfect dog...except when someone comes to the door. This is great information for us! Look out Millie...I'm coming to train you! (she just ran out of the room, hmmm)
i love your vidoes
Can you do a video on what supplies you need for your puppy also what dog food would you recommend for German Shepards
I have 2 very over the top aussies but they become even more over the top if friends come over & then will not listen. We have worked our way thru the Do More With Your Dog Trick titles & both have their Champ titles! my baby girl will b 3 in Nov this yr & competes in agility & OB (& does really well if not being too much of a freak that day) my baby boy is 16mnths & competes in Breed OB & just started with a few Dog Jumping rounds but does not have the concentration to stay in the ring for a whole class of that! Just way too much fun!
yeah that is my dog, she is now 7 months and still does the same thing, she will play for a while and then go eat grass and dig dirt. We call her Fernanda like Ferdinand the Bull, she prefers staring at the bees and birds flying by. Once in a while she gets it together. I get when a dog gets bored this one is just goofy. Half the time when she comes back from a walk she is worse than when she left no matter how long or short it was. We keep trying but we feel like there is not winning with her. She was bred for herding, but honestly she think she is one of the cows. The worst part is when she just zones out so bad and for her safety's sake we actually end up having to pick her up and move her at times. We persist just gets really tiring, my husband's joke has become "that's why she was the last puppy left in the barn", we love her just not sure what's us with her.
Hi Zac George. I am enjoying your videos. I have a 2 month old Mini Eskie and am applying some of your tips and they are working slow, but working. I do have a question though on teaching a puppy to accept a leash and then being led by it. I have been leaving the leash on him and he walks around with it, but if we it up and try to get him to come it becomes total hysteria. Thanks and keep the videos coming!
Hi Zak! Great new video! You cracked me up dragging Roo across the floor with the tug toy.
Joy Victory HAHA! Thanks Joy! Roux was so funny.
Ah I should've known coming from that part of the South that her name might be French. Roux = red in French. Makes perfect sense. Love the name and love the rapport betweem Roux and her Mom. Keep the videos coming Zak!
And Zak, you need a puppy! Why not 5
Me too
Cool
HI Zak, your videos are awesome. i have question . could you please name a treat for dogs which i can use when my dog is outside and in full distraction. My dog likes dogs chicken biscuits. but when he is outside in full distraction then he just sniff and dont eat. even if he take biscuit in his mouth he will exert out. i tried real chicken also. but want dry treat.
Hey zac. Do you have any videos on agility or obstacle training?
Cool opening aerial scene
nice
i agree with ur techniques except for i believe you have to reward them at first especially and gradually lay off the treat but increase the praise..
I really need this because one of my dogs is super grumpy, he sometimes hates you and sometimes he loves you
