Is This The Rustiest Car We've Ever Owned?

- This week Ethan and Jack head down to AutoMatrix UK to find if our JDM Honda SM-X is the rustiest car we've ever owned. Will our Christmas present to Ethan be the perfect project car for Ethan to modify, or is it too full or rust to save?

This needs to be saved. They have saved so much crap in the past and this one is way more special.
yep a rare motor
Damn right!
Ethan learns to weld
Please save it
Yh pls save this its a belter
I think it is time to teach Ethan how to weld!
I came here to say these exact words!!
YEEEEEES. Id be interested myself
You need something to weld TO!
he welded diff tho
This is our old car!!! Can't believe you bought it 😂. But now you have, please restore it, don't scrap it. We wanted too but couldn't afford it. We live miles and miles away from Automatrix. We desperately wanted to get it to him. We also have a Stepwagon same year in a similar state! Lee is your man! He is a legend to anyone who owns SMX/Stepwagons in this country. Fix it up!!!!!!!!! The BAP mobile must ride again.
What did you sell it for
@@Jb7878-i8r The mechanic said he would offer breaking money (£200 - £300) for it. The lads said that they paid 2-3 times more for it, so I would assume £500 - £900 which seems expensive for a rust bucket. But then again, it's a rare care in the UK.
How much sleeping did you do in it?
Lol you got lucky they bought it, they got ripped off
@@Jb7878-i8r It was written off by the insurance as someone stole wheel
Time to teach Ethan to weld something other than a diff 😂
Imagine the whole “Ethan’s Weld” arc, where Ethan transitions into his dark side of working with metal instead of wood
@@aidarsays I 'wood' love to see that
Of all the cars you have done work on this needs to be fully saved & restored
Great day filming this with Ethan, Jack and crew. Even if it was the coldest day ever!!!
We are already talking about next steps with this S-MX
So what’s the plan with the car? I imagine you guys first make it road worthy removing some rust
That is excellent!
May I ask how things are with it now that it is five months later? :)
@@AndorRadnaidue to the presenter changes at car throttle, we purchased the car.
We fixed the wheel bearing, exhaust and rollbar links. And have sold the car on as a project. The new owner plans to fix the rust...
@@automatrixuk That is nice to hear! Thank you kindly for the update. ^^
If you can save that junker of a Porsche, than you can def save this one too. Make a great series of saving this quirky little box 👍 Ethan learns to weld in the next 293847 episodes 😅
It’s time to shine - make it the most original and non rusted SMX in the UK
Most original? The mechanic said they would already have to use parts from other Hondas, Fords, and whatnot: 11:00 & 11:24
Do an extensive rust repair mission like Alex with his Miata!
fix it and convert it into a mini camper, so that it can take part in some kind of mad cap challenge for Ethan to drive around Europe with
i know there is a running joke about the layout and curtains, but loads of JDM cars had lace curtains, might be able to get a universal kit for it
Great idea tbf
This has Yorkshire car restoration all over it. 😍😍
It was heartbreaking looking at Ethan’s face as the mechanic used his magic wand to make the sills disappear!😔
Definitely worth a restoration! Videos have been so good recently too.
Ethan, you can get windshield filler to sort out the chip and as for protection there are films you can get that go over your windshield to prevent rocks and what not cracking it. They are kind of like a screen protector on a phone.
But uuh, looking at the underside there are bigger things to worry about.
Sounds like Yorkshire Car Restoration has a possible new work project on their hands :D
After they're done with Colin Furze's M3
Jack. Speaking of that Saab… We need an update!
Definitely save it! Would be amazing to see, and to see ethan enjoy it!
"Like good worse?"
Ethan 2024
defo restore it. its well worth it
2:05 that starlet!
I think this one is absolutely worthy of a full restoration. Would love to watch a series about it! It's such a unique car and the fact that you guys found a specialist for it is incredible. PROJECT SMX!!! ❤
Try restoring a lada... I am restoring mine and it has a lot more rust then your honda😅 but awesome vid as usual cant wait to see more!
Do a full restoration on it would be really good content!!
As soon as they started poking around underneath the car: "I don't feel so good Mr. Stark..."
Restore it, lads. It's a very rare and quirky car, you'll regret scrapping it. (or at least I'll be sad, because I'm a Honda guy 😄)
if any car should be saved THIS is the one ! Please make a series showing Ethan learning how to weld :)
Great to finally find out what Lee from AutoMatrix looks like. Was mega helpful when I was working on my neighbour's SM-X!
Save it.
Do a vid on getting inner and outer sill profiles made, and get Ethan welding.
Close your eyes and that car is definitely being inspected by Holly from Red Dwarf
The S-MX is dead Dave!
I've never seen a chassis rusted out like that!! Those salted roads really do a number on the underbody (I'm an Aussie we dont salt our roads - dont need to)
That starlet glanza 🫠 a 1.3l turbo i4, like 130hp?? 👌👌👌
And the rest, it's 220 ish atm
07:21 😂 His little face 🤣
So hilarious! 😂
I can't believe I'm rooting for a black version of postman Pat's van however it would appear that I am! You've got to get this thing back on the road and not half arsed either. Do it properly and it will be a great mini series to watch....on second thoughts, the welding may be like 9 years of Project Binky all over again!
Nice to see the SMX getting some loving online! Mine was just as rotten on the rear!
If you like the Honda, keep it, however it will become a labour of love!! Once fixed/repaired it will live on but this will be down to the effort put in to get it looking as it should all old cars contain rust it's how you future proof and noting its rarety some components will be like hens teeth to find let alone buy so it may end up being converted or upgraded having parts fitted that can be replaced easily like brake components, exhaust etc..... Good luck with the rebuild or cut your losses and weigh it in for spares
This car cannot be sold, scrapped or destroyed, please give it the time and care it deserves. Great content 👌
Come on lads, you simply HAVE to save her!
Make a series out of it, think of the views? I’m in already!PLEASE!🙏❤😊
I remember a StreetKa which was also for Ethan, and was so rusted than you decided to scrap it... this need to be saved.
I think the best thing about that car was the interior, the km/h speedometer (because who uses miles, aside from the UK and USA) and the aftermarket stereo! Being one with light up LEDs, it should at least have Bluetooth!
Save the car. It's rare and cool. This car is part of Honda's history of quirky and cool cars. Ethan you won't regret it.
Looks like a job for Yorkshire Car Restoration! 😀 The rust initially doesn't look as bad as Alex's BMW Touring though.
the jump-cut at 7:17 hit me right in the heart.
7:21 Ryan Gosling level stare
If you listen carefullyly I'm sure you can hear Ethan's heart breaking when the sills get poked through 🤣
Japanese cars, no matter what make, always seem to have a brilliant tendancy to rot spectacularly from the inside out. They can look absolutely mint on the outside but be completely rotten underneath. I got stung by a Celica that didn't have a spec of rust on the body. A look underneath on the side of the road it seemed a bit crusty but solid. Its only after bought it and had it on the ramp that i realised how bad it was. My father in law had a Primera Tino, again, mint on the outside but the subframe was more sieve than structural. I was looking at buying an MX5 and the rear quarter panel at the bottom of the wheel arch had bugger all metal behind it. The inner panel disintegrated when pressed it with my thumb.
Looking forward to see Ethan weld
You could always see if the lads at Yorkshire Car Restoration are up for a challenge…🤣
Fix it! It deserves another chance at life, and with Automatrix it'd be in very capable hands!
It is great fun watching you guys enjoying any kind of car and messing with it. Keep it up 🎉
Welding costs allot of money!
So have Ethan do it! :)
Once the minor things like new sills and gaskets are sorted, I think you should spin the wheel of (mis)fortune to pick a new colour to make Ethan get the car sprayed in - terrible options only.
minor things? it's rotten almost completely
This cars got sentimental value you can't abandon it
Good vibes on this channel. Really enjoying it
Please dont scrap it, you gotta save this one, its getting rare even in japan. Keep a piece of honda history alive in the UK
A full restoration is needed!!
This absolutely needs to be the next restoration
Definitely restore this one if anything!
Enjoyed this, it must be saved!
Also, we need the next 924 video please 🙏
Future Yorkshire Car Restoration project / collaboration
Time to call Yorkshire Car Restoration 😁
5:39 that’s probably why people go on to the Step wagon, they’re a bit bigger.
What are you doing, StepWagon?
I love seeing the cars saved but honestly, just bin this one guys
It would be good to see Car Throttle to have a crack at doing the welding, maybe go full tubular chassis with a K20 swap.
You already know how to take an engine in and out. If you had a welder and 🤏 effort. Could be cool.
You need to do (after repairs) a proper "Pimp my ride" neon, screens, pink fur alk over!
Mid mount something in it, anything in it. Bike engine, JZ, Vtec anything you know you want to do it!
Save it weld it fix it up! Next years Christmas surprise for Ethan?
It took me a minute to place the guy's accent at the SMX shop. He sounds just like Arthur English in Are You Being Served.
I would definitely restore it inside and out to Ethan’s taste. Maybe air suspension and wheels and then go on a European road trip with it as a micro campers
That's a cool little things. Wouod be good to see it brought up to a good standard.
This deffo needs saving - such a rare car and come on, it’s Ethan’s dream car!!
The rustiest car just happens to be a Honda :D
As the owner a 80s CRX and having had several Hondas in the family, I can confirm they do like to rust
Rebuild and modify. Would be interesting to see how much Ethan can do alone.
Yall should get a starlet like the silver one next to the smx. Starlet content would be fire
Check out the guys at Yorkshire Car Restoration, they’d love this and it would be good to see you all working together
When’s it going to Yorkshire car restoration?
I vote spend the money and get it fixed. It's Ethan's dream car, sure, you could probably go out and find a better example, but this one is his
My nights made car throttle has uploaded ❤
I'm coming over a bit Paul Calf.
'Bag o' Shite!'
anyone that would be able to genuienly save this car (not only for a looks/video) is a true hero. Coz the car right now is dangerous to drive with all the rust.
I rarely LOLd this hard at a "However..." before 🤣
Restore it. And in the end put an ebay turbo kit on it. It's a B series motor, it's gonna handle some low boost easily, about 300 crank should be possible.
Great content guys. Much better than that other bloke 😂
You should do a collab with Yorkshir Car Restoration. Its a very unique car
Definitely needs saving
Then drop a vetec turbo in just to see Ethan faces when he drives it 😂
7:22 the face of a broken man
Haha, let's get your Saab in here. Best moment
What that's it? It's in better shape than literally 90% of the cars you see on the road in Maine. You should see our Outback. The front coilovers have holes rusted through them and the wishbones are scary, the bottom of the radiator support is rusting out, etc.
Make do with what you can. Can't afford another car payment in this economy especially with auto loan interest rates.
Crazy how the previous MOT guy didn't even notice that rust.
Save the little beauty , just think of the loads of content you boyz can make , gotta be a winner
I feel like once the rust is sorted this would be a great successor to the Swagon
Cant take my eyes off the glanza ❤❤❤❤
Ethan needs to learn how to weld, these are super cool nuggets and deserved to be saved.
You have to fix it. And do a how do turbo your honda series on it. It will be such a cool car with love. And thousands of pounds spent
You've got to save this one guys. Get it welded, then let Lee work his magic on it. Also you should give us another 5 minutes looking at some of the other little gems that are sitting there.
I like that wee starlet Glanza.
Would love to see a full restoration on this !!
This is a question for Jack. Were you on the quiz show "Tipping Point", at some point? I saw a rerun on TV over here recently and there was a guy on there who looked very like you, sounded like you and was also named Jack who made it to the final round on the machine. Cheers in advance. IDB.
Rare car! Can anyone supply a non rusted shell from abroad ?
- UK cars bidies are like their breakfast; toasty.
This is such a cool car. Please save it!
Are we able to see any more about the Porsche?
I hope their supervisor considers that project worth continuing.
@@CheapBastard1988 It would be very annoying if the project was stopped because it is quite an exciting series and also they have already done so much work to the car so if they never get it roadworthy, that would really suck not just for us but for them too. However, at the beginning of the last video, jack showed a few photos of cars they needed to get rid of and for a split second you saw the porsche so I do have my concerns.
Well time to save another car. Ethan lets go!
Passion wagon project!!!!
