The “In Summation” title card sent me to another planet. Bold of them to assume there was anything said at all in this segment that could be remotely summarized.
The lack of an audience response actually makes this funnier. Plus it rather pointedly showcases the command of timing Seth and John have - they're not responding to an audience in the room, they're just THAT GOOD at knowing when the next line needs to happen.
Agree! Its like going from watching The Bimg Bang Theory to The Office, where you laugh because things are funny rather than hearing other laugh. Personally I love it
I love how everybody hates on Big Bang for using a laugh track when 90000 different shows have also used a laugh track and never is anything said about them.
@@ryanl784 The criticism of BBT is not so much that the laugh track is there, but that the laugh track is there and the show (allegedly) isn't funny. Before that it was Joey - the Friends spinoff - and Friends had previously gotten the same criticism. Before that it was Fresh Prince of Bel Air, before THAT it was Mama's Family, and in the dark ages of sitcom history it was Joanie Loves Chachi. Of that entire list, the only one I myself legitimately didn't think was funny was Joanie Loves Chachi. Even Joey didn't deserve its reputation - audiences just didn't "get" the show. All the rest not only WERE funny shows, they stayed on the air for years with a substantial audience, and Fresh Prince in particular is regarded as one of the best sitcoms ever. So I don't really think the exemplar of an "unfunny sitcom" has any truth to it at all, ever, it's just a social agreement that we will use this show as shorthand for a bad sitcom. Even if it's not a bad sitcom. We'll just pretend it is.
This is comedic gold despite what everyone says. First question from Seth, “why did you right this skit this way” the awareness of it being so odd is hilarious.
It being odd? Is that why he called him out. I was wondering why john writing it like it's a recurring sketch is john flexing his ego. Cuz when John said both. N Seth said well were in it now like he thought johns answer if both was bs

If they weren't, like, best friends, the energy here would be so uncomfortable, but instead it's so charming. I wish I’d seen it before I knew, so that I’d have an idea of how it first came across. That said...yeah. It seems like Seth is really trying to figure out why the heck they’re doing this bit. And JM...if I didn’t know, I’d say he was doing Norm MacDonald style antihumor. Now it just reminds me of someone I knew who couldn’t focus AT ALL after he tried Adderall. Ironic, I know.
As much as I care about John Mulaney and as concerned as I am for his well-being, I really don’t see why this clip specifically would come off as him being on something. Seth seems to be obviously reading off of cue cards which needed to be made beforehand (on late night shows the topics they discuss are usually pre-planned). There’s also a defined bit happening here, the premise being that John came up with an idea for a whole segment so he could come on and share his thoughts. Which are the same knee-jerk reactions that a lot of people had to Meghan and Harry leaving only to come to a more nuanced perspective on the situation with the help from Seth. Before learning that John was entering rehab after relapsing I loved this video and I honestly still love it just as much now.
You can still love it, but that’s not just fans thinking he seems high - it was reported by sources close to Mulaney and picked up by some reputable news outlets.

This is not a hindsight is 20/20 thing - it was a moment that stunned me. I was like "No, nope, that didn't just happen, did it?" He was soooooo damn loose, basically. Sober John walks a more deliberate line. Edit: To be clear, I thought it was hilarious, too. It can be both things.
Don’t know if you are being sarcastic lol but he was a writer for SNL and does stand up already. Has a Netflix special too he’s really funny. He does a joke about giving his university $120,000. So funny 😂

No it doesn't. Most of this is weird because its unedited. The piece itself isn't well written. The inherent point of the joke is that no one cares about the joke but john mulaney. Not that it can't still be funny, I just personally didn't find the laughs there. The only nod towards his future rehabilitation was that "its been a hectic time...for the windsors". Still, this weird 'we now know he would eventually go to rehab so everything is evidence of that' is bullshit. Again, smart but unfunny joke that I think gestures towards his own relationship with conservativist style. As much as I agree, I’m glad he’s getting help-him being ‘slow’ in this segment is part of the bit. The whole bit is him doing a self-obsessed, ‘odd’ caricature of himself giving a witty take on something uninteresting which he cares way too much about like he normally does. I’ve got nothing but respect for both of these exceptional comedians. My love goes out to John and his family.
well said.. his appearance on Desus and Mero 11 months ago was really edgy, I remember thinking I like this aging, cranky Mulaney. Just learned about him checking into rehab and surprised and hoping for the best like everybody else. Obviously COVID is testing us all but I wonder if being investigated by the secret service for a joke during his SNL monologue last year was an extra strain pushing him over the edge. I'll put my money on John getting through this and coming out stronger for it. He's got all the skills needed to become one of the all time greats.
This is a scripted sketch. Seth is not annoyed with him, he's reading lines off of cue cards. Seth and John wrote this together. The "rawness" is part of the bit.
I genuinely want to know if John just keeps showing up on his trench coat and sunglasses or if this is all from the same chat and they’re splitting it up into different days and different segments. I really want it to be that John just keeps showing up.
John was hired on as a writer for the show since he has nothing to do with stand-up right now so he is just showing up, but it's more of him behind the scenes pitching these bits then the rest of the writers' room just shrugging their shoulders and letting him do his thing.
i think the first one might have been from the same chat, but this one and future ones are different days because they’re referencing news occurrences that didn’t happen yet when they did the first one.
I was gonna say it’s the same day because Mulaney is wearing the exact same outfit (shirt and tie too) But it might not be because Meyers is wearing different clothes in the segments

Awesome observation/point - thanks!
I know it feels like a crazy 3am convo that you're sitting in on and I love it
This is comedic gold despite what everyone says.
@@briancannon3987 nah it was definitely written that way for the absurd humor aspect

If they weren't, like, best friends, the energy here would be so uncomfortable, but instead it's so charming.
Edit: Knowing that John was on drugs during this segment casts a horrible pallor over this. I'd been assuming that the delivery/structure was a bit - self-deprecating "look at this uncut material" - and, as it turns out, it really was just a deeply uncomfortable look at someone who wasn't getting the help they need. I'm glad he's checked into rehab.
They are best friends but the energy WAS uncomfortable. A few days ago it came out that John was high on drugs during this segment. He checked in to a 60-day rehab program. I hope he successfully recovers.
@@lilJuvis15 I heard about that, and while I don't want to speculate about whether he's high in this segment specifically (it's a plausible theory, but there's no way to confirm one way or the other and it feels a little mean-spirited), I probably would have found this more alarming than charming had I known about his struggles at the time.

As much as I agree, I’m glad he’s getting help-him being ‘slow’ in this segment is part of the bit. The whole bit is him doing a self-obsessed, ‘odd’ caricature of himself giving a witty take on something uninteresting which he cares way too much about like he normally does.
