In recovery, I’ve heard it said to newly sober people, “Get a plant, and if it’s still alive after a year, get a dog.” It’s widely advised to not start a relationship in the first two years of recovery, because getting sober is just the beginning of the real work of finding out why you needed the substance and learning other ways to cope without it. That takes time and a dedication that is very energy consuming. I love John and I hope he stays sober and dedicated to healing.

Same. I’ve found that it’s so much easier to stay sober when I can go to my support system and say, “I WANT DRUGS, HELP!” Just being able to say it out loud alleviates the pain so much. I’m glad you have support!
The wanting never goes away, but it definitely gets easier with time to not scratch the itch. I’ve always compared it to scratching an itch. At first, it’s like having chicken pox and needing pot holders duct taped to your hands, so you don’t scratch. It has now become like feeling a mosquito bite and just being able to put some mental Benadryl on it.
It’s also way easier when you have people around who can tell you not to scratch. ❤️

    • @rottensquid
      @rottensquid Год назад +2

@@heatherfeather7199 Totally see what you mean. It's interesting, there's definitely a weird thing about this kind of "my self is the art" artist where the line between lived experience and onstage persona is blurred. As though only by turning himself into this quirky character can he make sense of who he is and what happened to him. Wes Anderson's Life Aquatic explored this idea, blurring the line between the character's lived experience and his self-conscious performance for the documentary of the experience. In the end, there's no way to really separate them, because mugging for the camera is part of who he is.
What was interesting about Baby J is how hyper-aware John is on his public persona throughout the story, from the way he puts out the newspaper at the rehab clinic to the way he tries to take control of the narrative at the intervention. He refers to Mulaney in the third person A LOT. But at the end, he makes clear that his final story isn't the worst of it, it's just the worst he's willing to disclose to us. So that's probably a healthy boundary. After all, we still have to like him in order for him to ply his trade. But he's also acknowledging that the person he's been telling us about is only the edited version of who he had become, not a fictionalized rewriting of history.

@@EmpyreanLightASMR There are plenty of kind words in this comment section. "Kindness" does not always mean "positivity." Most of the comments are stating they are concerned or worried for him, specifically because these commentators are NOT naive about the lifestyle or what it means. Mulaney is in his first year out of rehab, and the first year is very fragile. You're not supposed to make _any_ big life changes, and Mulaney has made at least three, some of the biggest life changes one can make, in fact.
Stating concern for that or acknowledging that it's basically a bomb of a situation waiting to explode is not "mean" or "unkind." Just the opposite, it is the most kind to tell someone you like and love that you think they're making a bad decision.
Think of it this way; if you were about to step over a cliff, would you prefer someone say "I'm scared for you, please reconsider" or "Go for it, you can do it"?

@Kat Ashley I know a recovering addict and he was a complete nightmare when using. He’s super chill and nice now, in recovery. He was acting out a lot of pain from having a bipolar mother. He finally sought treatment and therapy and it was a huge relief. We’re all very happy for him. He is a beloved member of our circle.
What I am saying, is that you can still care about, and have compassion for a person even if their addiction is perverting their personality. One must make a distinction between the lost, destructive,, wounded, addicted persona and authentic, pure essence of a person.
Life is crazy and messy. People have trauma, mental problems, ADHD, shame. People seek to escape, self-medicate, modulate their brain chemistry. They sometimes fall down the rabbit hole, implode, betray, lie, confound. People wrestle with demons. I don’t engage with active addicts, but I have deep compassion for humanity. “To err is human.”

@@bartwilson2513 I do agree. At the same time, John is a celebrity who made the choice to do interviews so soon. Are the comments from some people right? Not at all. Is John fully aware of how the general public treats celebrities and made the choice to do this interview knowing full well people would say all kinds of stuff? Yes. Would his rehab recommend public appearances ontop of all the other stress so soon into his recovery? No.
People are gross, but you sadly will never be able to stop them from saying what they want about you. You have to take yourself out of the equation. I doubt, or at least really hope he isn't, John is obsessing over what people are saying about him and reading these comments. I don't approve of the majority of things people are saying about him, but they aren't me and they aren't you. We aren't them to change their minds and delete the paragraph before posting it. You know?
I wish we lived in a world where empathy was more of a thing. We don't. We have to remove ourselves from situations like this for our own sake. All addicts deal with the court of public opinion, mainly family and friends for the average person, on some level. John unfortunately is at a major level. It's still our duty to remove ourselves from the situation if it is detrimental to our recovery.

If we were totally honest about which drugs have which positive and negative attributes...and which people can handle which aspects of those....we'd all be living in a better world.
      But that takes radical honesty.

The more I learn about Seth Meyers, the better he seems. He's always gone out of his way to showcase his friends' talents. He gives credit to his writers, he has supported Amber's show, and he gives Wally a chance to shine and probably make more money by being on air. He is absolutely the type of guy who would help plan an intervention for his friend and then stick close to him to make sure he doesn't relapse. Mulaney is a super talented guy that any show would be lucky to have when he's sober, but I feel like Seth is the one who would take him on in any condition, just to have him nearby. I understand that Seth didn't recognize the problem as soon as he could have because he needed an outside perspective, but giving John that segment when he wasn't at his best probably saved his life. Once the audience pointed out that he seemed off it sounds like Seth and their other friends took a step back and made the realization that probably saved his life.
I'm glad that such a genuinely good person has this platform and these resources. There are so many complete and utter dicks in the entertainment industry. It's nice to see the good guy get ahead.
Mulaney seems like a genuinely nice person with a lot of love to give too, but he's got to love himself. Most addicts hurt people when they're caught up in their disease, and the nice ones tend to dwell on the guilt so much that it drives them back to it. I hope he has genuinely come out the other side of this, but this seems like a critical time that will make or break him.

In recovery it's generally recommended that we avoid romantic relationships for the first year or two. It tends to make it harder to focus on yourself and the work you should be doing on your recovery. I like John and Seth a great deal based on what I know of them. Friendships like theirs can be a powerful tool in recovery and I admire their willingness to talk about it so openly.

Kudos to John for doing this interview, he didn't have to and I hope he didn't feel pressured into it, but I think it could be really helpful for people to better understand and sympathize with people who struggle with addiction. I'm glad Seth is such a good friend for John and I hope things keep getting better for him.

I know he's a comedian and he makes jokes out of dark life situations but I cant Imagine how hard this was for him to tell the world what was truly going on in his life behind the scenes. Im really hoping for positive things for his life, I hope were all wrong and that this relationship and baby do help him stay sober. That being said I also cant imagine annas pain, and I hope she is doing well also.

As I watched this, all I could think was "John is so lucky he has a friend with connections who was willing to take the time to bring him on and literally coach him through all the crazy things going on in his life, to set a sympathetic tone and own the conversation." Seth did him a huge solid here.

i thought the same thing. like i know this is his thing and having had experiences of anything he's gonna tell jokes but these feel kind of genuenly sad, idk maybe its just too soon but I hope everyone involved is doing ok, including his ex wife. 7 years is a long time to then divorce and have a bb :(

Yeah, he probably is hiding a whole lot of real pain and trouble under these jokes. Which makes sense, he is probably not comfortable sharing those details and we have no right to them. I do hope all of those involved are going to be okay. Addictions can be hard to beat.

I definitely had the similar thoughts at first. It's wonderful to be empathetic to people going through a hard time, so it's lovely that you are clearly an empathetic person. But I the more I think on it, the more it comes to me that it's possibly dangerous to speculate state of mind when we have no idea about the circumstances that led to their divorce. It's all so personal and the decision to have children is not just one person's. Also, it's worth noting that John Mulaney always specified that he had no idea if they would change their minds eventually about kids, not that it was something set in stone. You could very well be right that it is a hard journey for Anna Tendler, but I'm going to try not to project as much based on how I think I'd feel in that situation.

He’s always joking and so it’s hard to tell if he’s just being self deprecating or if he’s actually clueless as to what it means to be an addict. He seems like such a smart and fun person to be around though and hope he is on the right track. Will be a daily battle though !
