- 4 of 7: Just another day on the construction site with your Grand Lemans Safari. This dealer film offers some compelling reasons for looking into a mid or full-size wagon.
See the "1981 Pontiacs" playlist for model-specific dealer films.

Wish the construction crews I see were like that one
It's interesting how much emphasis they put on the cargo carrying ability of the wagons.

Toad and Princess Peach grew up nicely
The Pontiac marketing department really beat that "MPG" acronym into the ground
2:47, You know you'll need locking compartments when you give your coworkers that look when they take your thermos!
Love these dealership videos on these my parents owned a full-sized Pontiac station wagon back in the 80s .
I love those wagons.
Dad had a 81 lemans safari 'grandpa had a 79 century wagon essentially the same car my brother and sister would use them when they got their license
The woman in green and blue is a timeless hottie.
When I think of Safaris, I don't think of lions, giraffes, antelope and a bad case of malaria, I think of Pontiac Wagons. 😁 How does a 96" / 8 foot sheet of plywood fit in a 90.2 inch cargo area as seen at 3:38 ? 🤔
There was a gap between the end of the floor and the back of the front seat. You may or may not have been able to haul a 4x8 sheet with the front seat all the way back, but it could be done if it wasn't. My parents bought a '79 Catalina Safari and a '85 Parisienne Safari new.
@@duaneknap3334 Thank you for the clarification. It had been my long held belief that this era of GM full-size wagon could hold a full sheet but the numbers provided in this video did not add up. BTW I drive the last Pontiac wagon called the Vibe. It certainly cannot carry a 4X8 sheet of plywood inside but it can easily haul a small bundle of 8 foot 2x4s.
@@rightlanehog3151 First-gen Vibe/Matrix has folding front seat back and separately opening rear window. Not sure whether the second-gen has these features. The original Matrix is a very versatile car.
@@TinLeadHammer The folding front passenger seat was only an option on the second generation Matrix/Vibe however the pop up glass in the tailgate did not carry over. I don't understand why every hatch, wagon, CUV, SUV etc does not have a fold-forward front passenger seat.
Just a few years later came the Chrysler minivan.
Minivans and some of the bigger crossovers are great, but I wish they had fold-down tailgates. If they split the hatch in the middle and gave users a choice of opening it as a clamshell or as one piece, it would be much easier to haul long items, especially rugs.
@@pcno2832 Nope. Tailgate makes it harder to push stuff inside, and tailgate has limited load capabiliy.
Back then 4 speed Automatic was the thing and occasionally even special orders or extra cost. 40 years maybe even sooner if your not getting at least a six speed auto then your behind the times. Most modern day vehicles are 6 speed automatic at minimum but can go 7,8,9, end yes 10 speed automatic.
If it is not electric it is behind the times.
Would love one of these today with the 4.9 V8
Best engine around back then. The 307 Olds was another good one.
As a 5'11" college student I can remember trying to fit in one of these in the early 80's in a car show and my head couldn't avoid the roof. Needless to say, didn't buy it!
I like the Safari station wagon though the Caprice Classic and Buick Estate looked better sure miss the old school GM cars so much if had a remote control though wasn't born when these cars were out doing time they all were 9 years old before born wish had remote control rewind back to memory lane though want technology go back when had better world 🌎 in the 1980s.
I wish they still made these cars instead of the over priced junk they offer today
Those wagons are long to the beach
never like the station wagon, but as I get older I'm starting to appreciate them, and maybe I'm missing them a little bit LOL it was a different time!
I had a Malibu Maxx ltz and besides the rust I really enjoyed the wagon set up
A crossover SUV is a lifted wagon.
1:50 Did they really put 3 seatbelts in that tiny rear facing seat? I don't think 3 adults could sit back there unless they really, really liked each other. I wonder if anyone tried putting a rear-facing seat in the Le Mans; there might have been room (for two!) if the spare were hung on the back. The 6000 was better suited to the task, with its space-saver rear suspension.
Women looked so much better without filters, Botox and silicone.
