- Survivor 1981 #GbodyPontiacLemans Junkyard Find. Spotted this one one while roaming the wrecking yard recently. These are not often seen and the 81 model had that one year only front end. It kind of a firebird inspired look to it. Although this one is a 4 door, the entire front end will swap into a Malibu or an El Camino. The Elco swap is actually pretty cool looking. This one looked to have been more or less a survivor with a pretty clean interior and overall straight body. There was some damage to the the passenger side doors but nothing major. I would have drove this one as is.

Whoa Nelley, body of "G" (technically A), it's going to be over for thee. This would eventually become the "Bonneville Model G" in 1982, the G denoting the switch from A to G body in 1982. That would run through the 1986 model year, although the "Model G" moniker was dropped by then.
I'm old enough to remember these brand new sitting in the showroom at the time when my 1980 Trans Am was sitting there too. We sat in the car while our parents were doing the paperwork. The sales manager said, "The only Trans Am I have left is the red one your kids are sitting in". My mother said, "That's not red, it's (code 79 Carousel Red, same color as a '69 GTO Judge) orange!" My father said, "We'll take it, we will never miss it in the parking lot!". 41 years later, I still have it....
Yuck, 231 V6, they were terrible back then. Weak oiling systems, underpowered, typically paired with the THM200 series transmissions, yes, likely the RPO "MV9" THM200 (without overdrive in these years). If it did run, it's probably a six piece band (a knocker....). Yes, the dash is a good one to have and any other A and G body items that swap over between divisions and years. Worse yet, this is the first year for CCC (Computer Command Control) which wasn't great with a V6.
Yup, the rear windows not rolling down was a really dumb idea. LOL. Some GM vehicles, like my grandfather's 1979 Caprice, they'd roll down about 1/2 way or so. Another not so bright idea, but it was done for safety reasons so they said at the time. I think it was to make people order AC in their cars, because without it, the back seat passengers would roast in the hot weather.
You can cash those in at a Coinstar machine, but don't do so for cash. Do it for a gift card, and you'll get full value. Coinstar takes like 12% off when you ask for cash. Some banks, like TD used to allow you to count it for free and then they would give you a receipt to use to put that amount in your account. They stopped that when the counters were deemed to not be accurate. That Precision Tune is still there at that same address. The rear defogger switch might have been in that area.
We got the VIN, we win: 1G2 for US made Pontiac, A for manual seat belts, D for LeMans standard model, 69 for four door, A for Buick produced 231 V6 with two barrel, aka RPO "LD5", 3 is a check digit, B for the 1981 model year, P for Pontiac, MI assembly (the "home" Pontiac plant which closed in 1988 and produced many models including the Fiero and the last "G" bodies in its final years), and the rest is the production sequence.
We got the tag, we can brag: 81 for 1981 model year (some plants used "B" for 1981, same as the 10th VIN digit), 09A for the first week of September 1980 production, 2AD69 for Pontiac LeMans standard model four door, P for Pontiac, MI assembly, 47B for Jadestone Rosiland cloth interior trim, 45U and 45L for Light Jadestone metallic upper and lower exterior paint, L for lacquer paint technology and A52 for front bench seat.
Whoa Nelley, four door and it don't go no more. 231 and it's done. V6 and hit the bricks. RPO "LD5" took a nosedive. THM200 and gotta go. Got the VIN and we win. Got the tag and the Google Man is glad. Going to be flat, and that's that. Ordered new and cheap, now it's just a heap. That's it, time to quit. Going to be squished and the Google Man isn't too pissed.
Get a life
I am amezed, wat an info, unbelieveable. Such a shame this Pontiac isnt being brought back to the road again. Would like to own one especialy with the thrifthy buick v6. Thanks a lot for the info, Greetings from Henry from Arnhem in the Netherlands.
@@henryhendriks9499 Sure, no problem. The 231 was not the engine to get in one of these. It was underpowered and not too reliable in these years.
Yes l remember these vehicles they quite common in the 80's and I seen many in junkyard in the 90's.
@@garymckee448 Yes, the "LD5" (231 V6) and "MV9" (THM200) combination was the one-two punch that totaled many of them out. I got several parts cars back then for these two reasons.......
81 is Definitly one of my favorite g body nose on the pontiac .
1981 Pontiac the year I was born cool classic for being 40 years old great video
Thank you Benny I always love watching your wonderful videos I am from South Africa
That's just a damn shame. She was still in pretty good shape. I'd bet that thing would run and drive.
Hello Benny again from Hamilton Ontario Canada my neighbor had exact car they got it in 1982 but was 1981 thanks for showing us and thanks for everything you do look forward to every video you post
Appreciate ya 👍
Thanks Benny supurb video. O i would like to own and restore this beautiful Pontiac here over in Holland. Would be a nice daily driver especialy with the thrifthy buick v6. Here over in europe these cars are all but gone. Rest in peace poor Pontiac, it deserves a seconde change considering the state and low milage. Again thanks a lot Benny. Greetings from Henry from Arnhem in the Netherlands.
At least some of it will live on. I took the entire front end, the deck lid, and the dash. Someone beat me to the steering column
Benny, that LeMans is in pretty good shape!
Dang that thing was nice yet 👍
A friends parents had one like this, same color but a 2 door with 267, nice looking cars. In late 80's my dad had a 78 4 door Cutlass with the no roll down rear windows. I always remember I got pulled over by the cops one night, we were cruising around in the middle of the night, car full of teenagers. Two cops approached the car, asked for license and registration and said roll down the windows back there so I can see you guys, my buddies said ''There's no handle or button'' the cop was like '' quit screwing around with me, do you think I'm an idiot'' LMAO! Good times. I can understand that some cars back in the day had rear windows that only rolled down halfway for safety reasons for children but when they did this it just boggles the mind. Somebody spoke up at a meeting and said I have a great idea, let's make the rear windows fixed, we can save $30 per car.
That's exactly what they did, wring out cost. Also if you think about it, I"ll bet that they sold more cars with AC for this reason. The salesman probably said, "Listen those back windows don't roll down, you'd better order it with AC". (which was a high profit option). Also, unless it as a Canadian model, it's not likely it would have had a 267. 1981 models had the 231 Buick V6, the Pontiac 265 V8 or the Pontiac 301.
@@googleusergp Yes I am in Canada and I remember it was a 267. I thought it was strange that my 1980 GP had a 265 Pontiac motor and the Lemans was a 267. Must of been a supply thing.
@@stepheng3667 Very likely, yes. Also emissions as well. Sometimes Canada got the "leftovers" from the US from the year before.
Cool find I don't think I a have ever seen one before.
First time for me in the yard
@@ClassicRideSociety wow that is rare to see I would get the front clip and put it on a Cutlass or a Buick or a monte.
They were everywhere in the NYC area back in the day. I personally remember about three or four in my neighborhood when they were new and through the 1980s. The 231 V6 equipped ones hit the scrapper first. The 1-2 punch of the 231 V6 (LD5) and the THM200 transmission (MV9) made them get totaled out pretty easily when they were about 10 years old.
Haha I love these! My first G was an 86 bonneville.
I’d like to have that hood emblem, it was in good condition, kind of sad but I remember when these cars were on the lot’s , nothing last forever, RIP Pontiac
Those hood ornaments were used on a number of 1980s Pontiacs
I may have one of those ornaments
Kool would been neat daily driver don't see too many those Gbody. Pontiac Lemans thet interior is mint condition the whole car is in great shape.
My first car was a 1980 Pontiac lemans 4 door. Same color as this one.
Man, that's a shame. That old girl could be brought back to service. It has lots of G Body popular stuff
I took the deck lid, header panel, fenders and hood along with the dash. Someone beat me to the steering column
My firat car was a 2 dr 81 lemans. The old man drove it 25 years. That car hauled all 6 of us around all the time. Soo comfy
I had a 78 two door in high school miss that car
I'd drive a junkyard car. Decent looking car for a base model. The yard should of sold that car.
They should have tried to sell it. Heck that red caddy is still there
Nice old car. It's still good.
Thank you. It was used in a movie.
Classic I need the hood off that. I have the station wagon version. Same year.
Nice find Benny. Hope you grabbed what you could. That stuff is in great shape and with a little cleanup you’re good to go. I found a build sheet for my Buick behind the upright part of the back seat when I took it out. Wouldn’t be surprised if it was there since most of that interior looks to be intact.
What year and model Buick and what plant was it made at? The VIN would indicate the plant of assembly.
@@googleusergp 77 Regal S/R. It’s from Flint.
@@geegee8380 It would have an "H" in the VIN.
That’s an easy money maker as it’s not too hard to find parts, easy to work on
I wonder if that was an elderly persons car who passed. If it had low miles probably driven to church on Sunday and the grocery store. The car probably wasn’t sideswiped. The elderly driver probably kissed something.
Then the Grandkids probably didn’t want it when it was left to them. You know they weren’t arguing who got it, and no one wanted it and off to the yard it went.
These have a five digit odometer, so it could have rolled over.
Never should have been junked, Nice dash ! it would go in any Gbody,
Some Monte Carlos came with that dash 84/85 I believe built in mexico,
Not all Monte Carlos in those years were built outside of the US. Several US plants made them back then.
never was a fan of these cars but this one was certainly worth saving ....such ignorance in todays people
Wow it’s all there definitely should be saved smh a kid in high school would like it
I would love a wagon version of this car. It's too bad pontiac went away.
I really like the front end on this. That was for 1 year only. In 82 they renamed this the Bonneville and had it for several years, but with a much less nice looking front end. Too bad, this car probably had plenty of useable life left in it if it only hd 53,000 miles on it!!
This was the best looking IMO
I thought the 1981 front end was the best looking of the Pontiac G-body coupes/sedans, wish they kept on with that front end longer than they did, I thought the 1982-86 Bonneville front end was very bland looking.
This one was the best looking IMO
I completely agree with everything you say good video EddieUK new subscriber to your channel🇬🇧
Cool!!! 👍👍👍
Too nice to be in the yard wish it could be saved
I had a Buick Park Avenue like the one next to this Pontiac.
Nice Grand LeMans front.
This is a classic G-Body. Same basic design as the Impala / Caprice. You could fix it up and use it for your Uber or Door Dash delivery route.
The Caprice is a B body, not an A body like this.
That dash looks like the same one that was in my 78 Pontiac GP
It's the same
Braces are part of the f41 suppention package. Usually.
Cool 😀
It is something what people scrap that car is perfect to me i would clean her up and put her back on the road better than a car payment to me old cars look better than the new ones anyway.
That brown Buick with the 17 inch 8 spoke alum wheels are worth 100 a piece or more.
I know it’s probably way to late for this but if you got any of the front end parts still I’m very interested
do you know where can I find a headliner for a 79 Chevy caprice 4-door
Any interior trim shop can make that up for you without a problem.
Became the Bonneville G for 1982
Correct, later on they dropped that moniker.
Some Of the 1980 through 81 Grand Prix came with aluminum radiator support which is Real viable
Actually it's the earlier ones 78/79. I have 2 of them. I put one in my 80 Monte
I have to think that header panel would be worth grabbing and stashing. When somebody needs one it's probably a $250 part. Is it all one piece with the bumper cover?
The steering wheel is kind of odd, too.
The lower door panel sections, I see those for the full size sell for good money online.
I took the deck lid, header panel, fenders, hood and dash. Someone beat me to the steering column. The front end is all one piece.
@@ClassicRideSociety Now what you can do for fun is round up an El Camino and put all that stuff on it.
@@CR7659 the thought did cross my mind
@@ClassicRideSociety A Pontiac is always an "upgrade" from a Chevrolet. LOL. (And yes, I like Chevrolet products.....)
The problem is that you'll likely be sitting on it for a while until someone wants it. If you have the space to store it, then sure. Otherwise, it will take up space for a while. But take the T-tops and Turbo Flow wheels that Benny pulled off the '81 Trans Am Nascar Y85. They are already gone and sold.
What junk yard was this please let me kno
BYOT AUTO SALVAGE in Elm Mott TX
Salvage yard your at looks familiar. Was this in florida?.
BYOT AUTO SALVAGE in Elm Mott Texas
I think the 2 doors were best looking of the 4 brands then.yet sold poorly.
A MORE DOOR!
Pulled an interior and console outta a 01 camry cus i kept finding quarters. Found about $30
I think ive got over $300 in coins right now from these yards
I heard there were rare newer quarters out there. Been looking out for one of them. I believe it was a "w" but i could be wrong
Be a great project car benny😀
I remember these downsized mid-sized GM sedans as being somewhat popular. But I saw a lot more of the personal luxury coupe (Cutlass Supreme, Grand, Prix, etc.) versions of this platform. To me, they always had that "cut down" look, like they were small cars made to look bigger than they really were. I do not see these 4 door models anymore in the upper midwest where I live. Due to corrosion from road salt, most of these did not last more than about 10-12 years here. The LeMans was definitely a better choice than the slightly smaller and less expensive Ford Fairmont. But it is surprising that on a 4 door, GM did not find a way to incorporate roll up windows in the rear doors. Even the Fairmont had them on 4 door models.
I'm often in Wisconsin on business and the cars are eaten alive there by rust and corrosion. It's unreal.
All the Chevy Malibu lovers from these years ("78-up)need to rescue that front end and the rear taillight panel.....Then they could turn their little Malibu into a Pontiac.....That front end just has to be more rare than a Malibu nowadays.
I took all that plus the dash. I think that front would also looks good on an El Camino.
@@ClassicRideSociety Sounds like you'd have a Grand-Bu or a El Mino. LOL.
hey is that lemans still there?
Long gone. They crushed it
I'm interested in that 81 Lamaze front grill if you can get both of those grills I will gladly pay you for them
I still need the grille if you can get them
It's too bad that car would have been a perfect LS swap sleeper
True. I snagged the front clip. Thinking it would look good swapped onto an El Camino
I would drive that car.
Those dimes were for phone calls when you break down driving that toilet !
😄 you're probably right 👍
Hey, Benny. Where's the summer going? We had a sneak peek of this gem the other day and it was great to see! I've always had a soft spot in my heart for Ponchos. I agree that it's a shame that it was junked! :/ I would daily that in a heartbeat. I can't say no to that change, either. I found $1.25, just last week. Another fine video. The Google Man was happy and came through (as usual), so life is good 😄 I'm curious, did you snag that dash? Anything else? I hope it will live on in other cars.
They beat me to the steering column. But i snagged the dash, deck lid, header panel, fenders and hood. Who knows, that front end looks really good on an El Camino. I googled it and its been done.
@@ClassicRideSociety That's a bummer about the column, but I'm glad you snagged all of those parts. That's awesome. I think that'd be a cool swap. I'm going to Google it as well.
Sure no problem. Glad it is appreciated.
@@googleusergp I know I've said it before, but you really enhance this channel. We really enjoy your stories and all of the information that you provide from the VINs, fender tags, dealer emblems, etc. Your thoroughness is impressive. This channel has only gotten better and your contributions will always be appreciated. Not to be overlooked, is the humor that you sprinkle in there. I catch myself thinking about the things that you guys say. For example, can't say no to a dime and you got the VIN, we win 😄 In short, I really appreciate you guys and this channel. Thank you for what you do. I'm looking forward to many more videos in the future.
@@jmac3732 Thanks, nice of you to say. The way everyone learns is when everyone contributes and shares what they know. Yup, a little humor goes a long way. I have to go take a look at my uncle's Kenmore (made by Whirlpool) washer today and then order parts. I'll need all the humor I can get for that one. LOL. Actually if it's what I think it is, it shouldn't be too bad to repair. Perhaps Benny could or would do an open house one day, it would be fun to get together and go on a junkyard/decoding marathon. LOL.
Grab the dash should be the same as a grand prix
I took it
Let's drop a 383 stroker with a TH400 into and have some fun. The damage on the doors can be fixed.
Plate C
Shouldn’t even be there. It’s in too good of shape!
Agreed
Is this really a g body? I thought all g bodies were 2- door.
Technically, this yr it was still an A-body. But the Gbody came in different body styles. 2 doors, 4 doors, hatchbacks, wagons and the el camino
@@ClassicRideSociety The Grand Prix in 1981 would be a G body (technically by GM's nomenclature an "A Body Special". This LeMans is an A body but they are closely related. Sometimes the parts book would say "A Special" for certain A body models. What was an A body in 1981 became a G body for 1982. So a 1981 Malibu is an A body, but became a G body in 1982, although they were the same car. Cadillac DeVilles were C body in 1983, but became D body in 1984. Same with the Olds 98. GM had alphabet soup back then. LOL.
fonziac
Bui-Iac as it's a Buick engine in a Pontiac branded vehicle.
Some the 4 door Olds cutlass and Buicks had no window cranks in the back, stupid.
Same as aSkylark?
I think the skylark was front wheel drive by that time
@@ClassicRideSociety Correct. The Skylark was a front wheel drive X body starting in 1980. 1979 is the last year it was rear wheel drive and was similar to the rear wheel drive Nova, Omego and Phoenix rear drivers of 1979. The LeMans would be shared with other A bodies of that year throughout the GM lines. The G bodies of course in some cases used the same parts.
You outta ring the bastards neck that scrapped that car. Funny how everybody is all about recycling and throw out perfectly good cars.
