I have a literal master’s degree in art history and loveeee this series. I HATED Rothko when I first studied him, thought his pieces were overrated, but that completely changed when I saw one of his pieces in person. His paintings are HUGE, it literally engulfed me, sucked me in, and I couldn’t stop staring at it. It tapped something in my mind that I’ve never accessed before, I almost had an existential crisis honestly LMAO but it really changed my mind about his art 🥺
I think that’s the problem with seeing art in books or online versus real life. I didn’t ‘get’ monets waterlilies until I stumbled onto it at the Portland art museum (didn’t even know they had it showing at the time, I feel very lucky). I just sat on the floor in front of it for 20 minutes. Could have done 2 hours. I always assumed people used ‘normal’ canvases like a 2x4. I didn’t realize most ‘famous’ pieces are very large until I saw them irl. Definitely feels like you can walk right into the art.
@@strawberrycherrybabyExactly!! Part of the reason why I studied art history is because it’s a physical manifestation of the human mind. Pictures on a phone or in a book don’t cut it, you 100% have to experience art in person. It’s also really beautiful how we can connect to the same works of art that people generations ago have enjoyed too 🥺
It's very frustrating for me to see these pieces hung on white walls in well lit rooms. They should dominate ALL of your vision.
Virtually, I only felt what Brittany said when these pieces suddenly took over the entire screen. I was paying full attention to the video and holding the phone very close to my face, so I felt immersed in the image.
They should take all of your vision: be hung in walls painted with collors that continued the piece (so your peripheral vision isn't ruined by a white wall) and have no direct lighting on them.
Ideally, the exhibition rooms should never be full so the viewer gets to look at the paintings with no rush.

@@bruisy_591 I hear you! That would be an AMAZING idea for a traveling exhibit. I’m lucky I live super close to a couple of museums that have rooms dedicated to Rothko, all with white walls, and honestly when you’re standing in front of these paintings you don’t really notice the white walls at all. I think due to how massive the pieces are but also how deceptively detailed they are. But absolutely LOVE the idea of making Rothko paintings even more immersive!

I stood in front of a Rothko in New York for the first time a few years ago. At the time I was with a very toxic/narcissistic ex. I was so incredibly moved and really did not expect to be, anyway... he told me I was feeling.interpreting it wrong and got mad at me lol. Since then Ive been wanting to go back and have a more authentic experience and be able to feel free in my own interpretation. Thanks for educating in such a non-pretentious way. Its so refreshing and actually very healing for me to hear this taught like that.
All I can say is that you Brittany have a truly artistic, human soul. To feel so deeply and compassionately about art or music or whatever you may be interested in. I just have so much respect for you because of how much you care.

As an art student and someone who has always loved Rothko's paintings, thank you so much for making this video.
When people say they just "don't get art" or say things like "a kid could've done that" talking about pieces like these it makes me genuinely sad for them, because looking at art in a more profound way and understanding it as something that is inherently a part of being a human is such an amazing perspective to have, but the society we live in today makes it hard for people to even have the time or energy to look away from their work and responsibilities to take a moment to REALLY look at art, understand it or feel it. So I appreciate someone with such a huge audience making an effort to explain this all so eloquently and hopefully get more people interested in art in general :)
First time I saw a Rothko I knew nothing about him; it stopped me completely in my tracks in a gallery, I just had to sit and stare. I felt grief, peace, silence/chaos - the whole lot. You couldn’t have explained it better 💕
im not a huge expressionism/ abstract girlie, that being said Brittany can literally make me care about anything simply with her enthusiasm. The care with which she describes Rothko’s art i’m immediately like ok, i need to go to a museum and stare at a Rothko from one foot away for 3 hours and cry about it. i love you Brittany, you’re so cool. thanks for letting me learn things as a 20 year old ❤️
Have you always been into visual art? It sounds awful but I feel like I just don't "get" art. It never really makes me feel anything besides "that's pretty" or "that's ugly" and I wanna change that! I wish it could touch me the way music does.
@@etta5487 Maybe you've just never found visual art that's truly moved you, and maybe visual art just doesn't do for you what music does. You don't have to enjoy or experience anything the same way others do. "That's pretty" and "that's ugly" are still very valid reactions/opinions on art.

I learned about Rothko before going to the MoMA museum in New York in 2022. Knowing the backstory to his paintings I stood in front of one (actually featured in this video @ 8:53) and silently contemplated my shitty life at the time. It led me to tears. I could hear people behind me whispering, I can only assume they found it a little silly for me to be crying over a painting like that, but his paintings truly did for me what he intended. Thank you for bringing light to different artists, I think it really does make a difference on how you perceive art once you know the history behind the artist.

I've always found it so hard to 'get' art and struggled to understand why it is so popular and important and I'm gonna be honest that has made me feel very insecure and dumb in a way. Thank you for giving Rothko his due. NGL his work was not super interesting when I first learned about him in art school, but comparing him to the Romantics and the philosophers of the time was a great way to add proper context. As an older artist, the abstract has grown so much in appeal. Also you remind me of my favorite art history teacher ❤ made sure I had her for all four years.

I highly recommend reading or watching the play “Red”. It’s essentially about Rothko creating the Seagram murals. Just two characters - Rothko and his assistant who starts to question him. The filmed production I think is on prime and it’s so fascinating, especially as a Rothko admirer.
I was a prop master for this play during undergrad. It was super fun and made me appreciate Rothko and art in general on a whole new level.

It's a little bit healing for me to listen to one of my favorite creators speak so passionately about art and taking the time to look into the history and the meanings behind pieces and artists. I love this series so much. With a world of people who just look past art it feels so hard for me to see a future for myself where my art matters. Everything is about money, likes, and competition, and it sucks that an expression of my emotions and pieces of myself are reduced to 25 likes. As someone who's in art school struggling to connect to the "fine arts" and "abstract/modern" art, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for leading me to this. My teachers have told me of this artist, but it never clicked. I listened to the videos you put in the description, and I think my heart moved. I actually did cry a bit.

Not even ten minutes in yet, but while I was vaguely aware of his work, I hadn't really _seen_ any of them. That one that looks like a red door with a window in it - I am struggling with oncoming agoraphobia, and this was like a punch in the gut. That's how it feels. What he did with paint is what I try to do with writing and poetry: stripping away the excess to show that core shining note of Something. 100% learning more about this dude now. _Thank you_ for this series.
Edit:: finished the video, ordered a book about him, and now can't stop thinking about his art. I was diagnosed with depression over 20 years ago and it's only gotten more severe over time. As you showed his paintings getting darker as he got older, I was constantly Leo diCaprio pointing-at-screen meme and internally screaming that 'he _GETS_ it'. I never would've thought I could react so strongly to art! But I _get_ it! I feel the same thing he put into those paintings! If I ever get the chance to see any of his work in person, I'm taking it, agoraphobia or no. I _get_ it. Holy shit.

I’m not sure if I’ve heard of or seen any of Mark Rothko’s work, but I’m not a huge fan of abstract or abstract expressionism, BUT even though I’m not, these videos always give me a new perception and appreciation for art and artists I previously viewed as “meh” (like Andy Warhol)

I think this has to be one of my favorite ones from your art history videos. This was really moving and honestly once you break it down the way you did I do get the emotion behind those paintings. I feel like I remember passing by a similar painting (I’m not sure if it was by him) while at a museum in San Francisco not that long ago. I felt sad when looking at it. It wasn’t just shapes when you’re up close to it. You see texture and movement frozen it time. They are definitely so much more in person.
