Goya was from a village (Fuendetodos) near my city in Aragón and I am really glad that you are talking about him , I am an Art Historian and Goya fascinates me. We have a great Museum (not so big but very interesting) about his work with an amazing room with all his engravings, but sadly a lot of his famous works are in Museums like el Prado in Madrid, specialy his paintings from La Quinta del Sordo. He is at the top of spanish painters and engravers and we are very pround about his figure and what represents: a change of mentality about religion, politics (his view about the french Ilustration is very telling) and art that preceeds a new Era for our country, that is, the end of Absolutism.
I hope all the people that enjoy this video search and learn more about our history and our art, thanks a lot for sharing his art, because it is part of all of us

I also notice (with horror) how society of my country is going back to ancient times, how people around me lose any humanity and empathy and self control and how people become more cruel. I love my country with my whole soul and I understand that it's a hard time for it but it's scary seeing how people are so ready to torture anyone who has different opinion. It's scary when people around you start to call those who aren't like-minded "possessed" and "demons" and when they operate by such logic who knows how far they're from trying to get rid of those "demons" they see. I feel like I'm in a nightmare where I can't scream and feel completely hopeless. And this is exactly how I would paint this nightmare.

and yes, you pronounced Aquelarre perfectly! Aquelarre basically means the same as sabbat, a meeting of witches at night. Aquelarre comes from a Basque word (language from the Basque country, in the north of Spain), from aker (male goat) and larre (meadow or field), because it was thought that the Devil would appear in front of witches in the shape of a male goat. So, in the beginning, it only meant the place those witches would summon the devil, but nowadays we use Aquelarre in Spanish as a synonym of “a witches reunion”. hope this helped!

Saturn Devouring His Son especially stands out to me. Between those works and Bosch's The Garden of Earthly Delights I don't think I've ever been as fascinated and disturbed by another trip to an art museum as I was at the Prado (In a good way). Amazing that you can put such culturally important content into a palatable format for everyone to enjoy. As an art gay who is enamored by your humor, I think you have something really special with videos like this. Praying for a more CONSTANT return of the incredibly passionate fART history content you make.

The hand gesture is really commonly used (even today) in Southern Italian culture - Mano Figa (or Fig hand) its the equivilant to flipping someone off. It is supposed to ward off the devil or evil energies (il mallochio - evil eye) because the spirits are so shocked at how rude the gesture is. My family is Calabrian, I wear a mano figa amulet on a chain daily.

Please keep making these videos!! I took the Ap art history course at my high school and it completely changed how I learned history.
Art history to me shows really how humans felt during these periods. They were going through wars, sicknesses, emotions, and growing into new eras and mindsets. It is so interesting to see how these artist depicted these times. And I started finding myself becoming intrigued and excited to learn history through art!
And seeing one of my favorite RUclipsrs make videos talking about art history is just amazing! So please keep it up!

Literally my favorite painter. I'm so excited to see this. could be my own mental illness but there's something I find kind of whimsical about with his paintings. Like the witches sabboth painting to me just looks like a little gathering and the goat is just like "hey susan hows the family?" and susans showing the goat her skeleton baby all like "OH this is billy he's a bit under the weather"
Goya's sketches are fantastic too, he was such a skilled sketch artist. There so much movement and life within his anatomy drawings.

Ik it wasn’t discussed in the vid but man, the full painting of the dog shown at the end just fills me with sadness and existential dread. Just really gives you the sense of hopelessness Goya was feeling during that time

This is you best FART history video to date!! You strike such a good balance of historical and biographical analysis of Goya's work. The idea of "human bodies without human reason" is so fascinating to me, especially because that seems to be a consistent through line in a lot of Spanish painting (thinking Picasso, Dali, El Greco, Velazquez...). I wonder if/how this theme is influenced by the arid landscape and peninsular isolation of Spain. Can't wait for your next viddy!

Thank you for making this! (sorry if this sounds film major 😭) I am currently an illustration major and Goya has been a huge inspiration for me. And I really love it when art is appreciated like this cos it does not get talked about enough or it gets overlooked entirely and dummied down to "this is spooky and creepy".
Art history is really really cool and I think it's very fascinating to see that even hundreds of years ago painters who had anxiety, depression, expressed themselves and that they are still talked about and it's very inspiring and makes me want to make art that's meaningful like this.

The fig sign is a mildly obscene gesture that uses a thumb wedged in between two fingers. The gesture is most commonly used to ward off the evil eye, insult someone, or deny a request. It has been used at least since the Roman Age in Southern Europe and parts of the Mediterranean region, including in Turkish culture.... apparently

You mentioned the word "Akelarre" which is indeed a basque word and not catalan. Basque is a language spoken in some parts of the north of Spain. It is an official language (stated by our Constitution) as well as catalan or galician.

as much as I enjoy channels dedicated to art history like the ones you mentioned, I miss the conversational aspect of being in a class or talking with friends. When you add your own perspective to these explanations I think it brings that feeling of collaboration, and I imagine makes it easier for people who don't much care for art history to understand and relate more to the works and artists. Keep doin' you because you're killing it.
