  • Learn how to make a shrink pot, a woodcraft made from the a branch of greenwood tree such as Tulip Tree, Maple, or American Beech. This woodcraft can be created with just a few tools, mainly a Sloyd Knife. A shrink pot is a small section of tree branch that is hollowed out with a bottom that is fitted loosely. As the wood dries, it shrinks, and the bottom is locked into place, hence the name, shrink pot.

    Thanks Winnie, it was a pleasure to watch the whole process by your hands the trad. way without any electric tools !
    I also made a couple of them w and w/o lids . My way differs at some steps but there are many ways leading to Rome 😊
    Welcome from Bavaria / Germany

    i wonder if you get the right wood and not drill through the bottom could you make a coffee or tea cup with it

    • @well-versedman9583
      @well-versedman9583  2 года назад

      That is a good question. Generally speaking, the cup would crack or check as it dries. That is due to the uneven shrinkage of wood cut from a branch. For example, if you cut a shrink pot blank from a section of tree branch and let it dry before making a shrink pot, it will dry with a big crack lengthwise down the blank. It is possible to make cups from wood, just not from branches.

    Can it hold liquids? Can you use some treatment inside to make it hygienic and longtime durability for a drinking mug?

    • @well-versedman9583
      @well-versedman9583  3 года назад

      The shrink pot does not typically hold liquids. I have given this idea some thought over the years, but never came up with an idea that would work.

      people use pure beeswax on mugs for cold drinks. supposedly waterproofs it and is natural.

      My grandfather used to make a butter churn by this way, and he put some steel rings on outside. But I do not think they put some hot milk in it. I know it could hold liquids.

      Depending on the wood used it is perfectly safe if the shrink pot is made properly it will shrink down to pinch the bottom piece and make it water tight but this also depends on the size and species of wood used i make them and ive never had a problem with them being water tight but as someone said before there are not design to hold liquids but things like sugar or salt etc which helps them to keep fresh

      I intend to create a video for spoons at some point in the future, hopefully not too far away.
      But I'm working on it! A few videos in the making are a child's toy made from bamboo, a shaving horse video (including my spoon mule!), and a video on constructing the take-down shaving horse. I recently published a blog post on my shaving horse with a peek at the take-down version I just completed (wellversedman.com/my-shaving-horse/) Thanks for letting me know what you'd like to see.

    I am wondering why it did not crack while drying in your car. Great job!

    • @well-versedman9583
      @well-versedman9583  3 года назад +6

      That is a good question! Cracks occur in wood because of uneven stresses in the wood. As fresh or green wood dries, it shrinks. If a thick piece of wood dries and shrinks quickly on the outside but dries slowly and does not shrink much on the inside, it will crack. The shrink pot is a thin-walled cylinder of wood. Since the walls are thin, they dry at an fairly even rate - even in a hot car. If the walls were thick (½ inch or more), the risk of cracking increases. Thin walls are the key! The real risk of cracking is when the diameter of the bottom is larger than the finished diameter of the cylinder with the groove after it dries. That is the tricky part of making a shrink pot - trying to guess how much the cylinder will shrink. The best way to avoid that type of crack is to make the groove for the bottom at least half as deep as the wall thickness. Thank you for watching!
