@@Kitepops101 thanks 👍🏼 Tally Ho is a great team restoration job; I really like this: preserving history is fundamental for future generations. Congratulations to everyone who did this wonderful work.
wow, absolutely beautiful ! great job, and hope you get lots of years out of her, Thanks for sharing! at 75 I still enjoy a little woodworking in my garage, but wish I was as talented a craftsman as you ! My dream since a kid was to build my own sailboat, but that's not happening.
Thank you very much Larry. Your personal testimony touched me. The few minutes of video do not show the years of work that went into this construction. I’m not a professional builder. I had to be persistent and never give up, because not every day the work goes well. But I would like to encourage you to make a wooden boat, because it is a pleasant job and excellent for your physical and mental health. Before building the TITMOUSE I made two small boats of simpler construction, to learn about the tools and correct gluing… and the results were good. Watch the video on my channel: “How to Make Your First Wooden Boat - Step by Step”. Just start my friend… because you will not be able to stop until the boat sails.
Thank you very much Al 👍🏼 I’m really very proud. The 15 minutes of the video do not show patience, resilience and the many hours of work. When you finish - which sometimes seems crazy - it’s a moment of great happiness; and sailing is fantastic. I recommend it, because these are hours of work that you gain in health forever…
Thanks Peter 👍 I bought the plans many years ago, through the American magazine Wooden Boat. I belive you can buy the project on some website. Good luck and good winds friend.
Of course Peter. I did it according to the project published in the book “Boatbuilding in your own backyard” by S.S.Rabl, 1995 edition. The book has some complete and super detailed projects, I chose and made the TITMOUSE 15.
Buena suerte y buenos vientos.
Thanks Ross; good question 👍🏼 In addition to the all-light wooden construction (with the exception of a few parts), and all waterproofed with epoxy resin, I use some expanded polyurethane floats underneath the removable decks, and an empty 30-liter plastic gallon in the bow. The hull is very stable in relation to the sail area, and for safety I also don’t use a teether on the mainsail - like Optimist, when the wind is strong. I’ve had some scares - it’s a fact of sailing - but I haven’t capsized the boat yet…
Thanks Gunther 👍🏼 The project does not have a cabin closure. It’s a daysailer boat I believe. But I think, if I’m going on a small cruise, I’ll close it with a canvas and zipper, just like camping tents. Another advantage of the project is that the top of the cabin is pivoting, with hinges at the front and a support to keep it higher - or fixed to the boom. I use a poita or anchor to leave the boat in the water, as it is always facing the wind and the cabin is protected from wind and rain. It’s a very versatile small sailboat, and creativity is part of the adventures. Good winds friend
Eu comprei o livro “Boatbuilding in your own backyard”, de S.S.Rabl, , edição 1995, num anúncio da revista norte americana Wooden Boat. Além de diversas dicas de construção, madeiras, ferramentas, velas etc., acompanha alguns projetos completos de barcos que ele fez e ensina fazer, dentre os projetos tem o TITMOUSE 15. Talvez você encontre no EBay. Boa sorte.
In my region there are also eucalyptus trees; it can even be used for a canoe, but for a job like this I believe that a more nautical quality wood = cedar for example.
@@pcf366 good question 👍🏼 thanks. The two machines were the table saw, to cut the strips (but this job can be done in a shop) and a band saw. The power tools were the jigsaw, drill, screwdriver, sander and plane. The main hand tools are the plane, wood rasps and lots of F clamps. Lastly, tape measures, squares and bevel gauge. Good work my friend; the result is very good forever.

From over fifty years of sailing experience I have my doubts this boat would sail very well. That reverse rudder, the sweep of the lines up to the stern and centreboard system may create some serious balance problems especially in gusty conditions. Otherwise you have to admire the craftsmanship. Not all works of art are practical. But hey well done to the builder.
Thanks Nick 👍🏼 When I decided to build the TITMOUSE, I did so because it was a beautiful boat and the challenge of the strip plank hull. As for the rudder, I was really suspicious because it was wide but shallow; I even thought about modifying it for a rudder with deeper action, but I saw that almost all models of that time - and of this size - have the rudder in this format (protected by the directional stern kell/skeg). However, the central kill works very well and the boat lulls efficiently; but because I sail in a lagoon I feel well protected when surprised by strong winds. The hull has a flat botton and is very stable in medium winds, but in strong gusts, with the boat heeling, it tends to leave me without rudder control… She is certainly not an open ocean boat. Your observation is very good.
That is very nice, but how long did it take you? Would you ever build anything like 9 meters or more? Just curious, I am not going to do that. Too expensive in materials, plus I already have a boat. But curious.

Nice work. What are the dimensions of the strip planking?
Thanks Wallace 👍🏼
I made it with 35mm x 20mm. This measure worked well because the bow has to bend and twist.
Didn't you use a steam generator to shape the strip planking?
Here, in Guarapari, I have several types of eucalyptus available.
It’s not necessary with this strip measurement.
In my region there are also eucalyptus trees; it can even be used for a canoe, but for a job like this I believe that a more nautical quality wood = cedar for example.
