    I just had my first dark & stormy last night. Someone had given my wife some ginger beer (a local brand called Dickies, it is low in carbonation and sugar, and not extremely spicy) and I suggested cocktails. I had a bottle of Hamilton 151 that I brought back from the US (we live in British Columbia Canada) and she didn't realise what 151 or overproof was, she made us double bubbles withhalf a can of ginger beer each. I couldn't believe how smooth it was, I could barely taste the alcohol, it was delicious!
    That was also my first time tasting the Hamilton, or any overproof for that matter.

    Actually I had my first Dark and Stormy in Las Vegas just this past week. The Bartender said the same thing. They did not have Goslings and he used Myers Dark Rum. I loved it. He did throw a mint leaf on there and a lime garnish. well I just got back home and went to my local liquor store and bought a Bottle of Goslings Black Seal and Goslings Ginger Beer. Wanted to get the true experience. I am doing a video. I hope you check it out. Cheers.

    My first Dark & Stormy was in Bermuda so you know it was made with Goslings. I brought some of that rum home with me to NY. My go to is still Goslings and my favorite ginger beer is Fever Tree. I use the light version that is sweetened with agave which keeps the carbs low but the flavor is great. I love a good mule and enjoy them made with gin, too.

    I looked into the whole legality issue when I did my Dark n Stormy video.. basically you CANNOT copyright a recipe, only a name! ...so they have copyrighted the name Dark n Stormy... so legally, any bar or restaurant can make the drink with any rum they want... BUT! If they're going to PRINT Dark n' Stormy in their cocktail menu, they HAVE to use Gosling's... and the distillery has been known to pursue legal action against bars using other rums. Cheers Steve! It's a great drink... honestly... I usually use Havana Club 7 and lately, I looooove the new Canada Dry Premium Ginger Beer!

    • @StevetheBarmanUK
      @StevetheBarmanUK  2 года назад +1

      See this is where we get all confused. Cos In the UK (and I think Europe) Canada Dry is Schweppes. There is no separate company like US/Canada. So Schweppes Ginger Ale…is/was Canada Dry (they’ve dropped the Canada Dry now). So I would assume… probably wrongly…that Canada Dry Ginger Beer to you, is just in fact our Schweppes Ginger Beer!
      However to dive even deeper… in the UK it’s actually probably Merchant Heart (another Brand). Which stupidly is owned by Suntory. Suntory own the Schweppes Brand. HOWEVER…in the UK, Schweppes Historically is licensed to Coca Cola. It’s a flamin brand Merry go round that makes Bacardi vs Havana look a walk in the park. But… I wouldn’t mind betting you, it’s the same Ginger Beer as we get here…just a different flippin name! 🙄🤦‍♂️😂

      @@StevetheBarmanUK LOL.. I wouldnt be surprised... although here they labelled it "premium" so they can charge more... but they also have a premium ginger ale in the lineup that I havent tried... I would be curious to dry the standard Canada Dry ginger ale vs their new premium brand

    I LOVE the "Dark and Stormy", but I simply REFUSE to use Goslings BECAUSE they are so litigious, and actually HAVE gone after bars for using other rums in this drink.
    I use Kraken and Fevertree "Distiller's Cola" (which is apparently different from the "DC" they sell in the UK--it's delicious and rich, unlike the weird, thinned-down stuff they sell in the UK...) and Bundeberg Ginger Beer (the N/A soda pop) if I want it sweet or Royal Jamaican (the alcoholic kind) if I want it spicy and extra-strong and it makes an amazing Dark and Stormy, Gosling's be damned...

    i think my first ''Dark N Stormy'' was with Havana Club 7 year and Fever Tree Ginger Beer, I don't think I loved it but I'm sure I would now. I LOVE Fever Tree ginger beer (and pretty much all their products I've had) and I haven't had Havana 7 in a long time but I'd really like to go back to it. I think Appleton Signature (or 8 year) works perfectly with ginger beer and another favorite of mine is a local spiced rum called Chic Choc (actually it is aged rum from Barbados, Jamaica and Trinidad then infused with 7 local spices) which I find works really well with a good spicy ginger beer.

You way over did it with the lime. The lime (one slice is a garnish). We NEVER used lime at all and we NEVER put bitters in a Dark and Stormy. We ALWAYS used Barrett's Ginger Beer... Never any other Ginger Beer... Gosling now has a Ginger Beer that they make... but, it no way compares to Barrett's Ginger Beer...
