  • This episode shares my process for searching and selecting the right electric vehicle in today's used EV market. From older models like the Nissan Leaf to newer entries like the Bolt EV, now is a great time to consider going electric!

    Thank you. Good video. My story is similar. Bought a used 2014 Leaf in June of 2017and got lucky. It was in good condition and reasonably good battery health. Here in Maine, it gets really cold for 5 months of the year. However, the range shown on the Guess O'Meter has never been below 85. Maintenance costs are near zero. I did replace the resistive heater for 250 and fixed a door handle. I've bought tires and windshield washing fluid that's it. The wipers are still working well, even. Yesterday on a 50-degree day, I saw 90 miles estimated range. We have no worries about range because we never drive more 50 miles on a single day. 99% of our driving is local, mostly shopping and visiting friends.

      Sounds like you picked the perfect EV for your driving needs! I'm worried some may be dissuaded by the relatively low driving range of many of the earlier EVs, but if you can live within those limits they are still excellent options.

    I’ve been driving my 2017 VW egolf for 5 yrs now . Looking for a used EV that gets 300 miles on full charge . Audi e-trons were really cheap leases 2 yrs ago . Hoping you post more sights that sell used EV’s . I might need to hit up an auction at the end of year 2022. Blessings

      Cars are just generally in shorter supply now, and that might be especially for used EVs. Took us quite some time to find the 2020 Outlander PHEV we now drive, and the site we found that through was Vroom.

    There are no screens on the Bolt EV to tell you if there are any battery degradation. Chevy is using battery management system and looking on the GOM really just tells you what the current drivers are doing efficiency wise. My car was brand new with 60 miles and only had been test drove and only showed around 150 miles in the medium....my boyfriend and I were freaking out and thought we had to recharge to get back home to Ohio from West Virginia but the computer and GOP kept going higher and ended up with around 80 miles left when I got home. There maybe someway to find degradation but it would be on the IMDB port maybe?

    • @EVeverything
      @EVeverything  3 года назад +3

      Yeah, not as clearly illustrated as on the LEAF. There's even an app called Leaf Spy that gives even clearer info on the battery. Maybe there's a similar app for the Bolt and other vehicles, but I have not heard of any like that besides Leaf Spy.

    You need to compare the Kw/H vs milage. I dont own a ev yet. They could be aggressively drive it on the lot maybe???

    • @EVeverything
      @EVeverything  3 года назад +1

      Yes, and aggressive driving by the previous owner can skew the miles per kWh metrics as well. If you can find the miles per kWh info on the car, that is another way to gauge whether low range is battery-related or just a result of inefficient driving. When I bought my Nissan LEAF it showed a reading of 2.7 miles/kWh and I brought that up to like 4.8 in just a few weeks of ownership.

  • @gamergeek8933
    @gamergeek8933 2 года назад +1

    I am pretty sure you are reading the bolt gauges wrong. The top number there is the maximum miles you could get at your current charge and the bottom is the minimum. The middle number is how far you can get the way you are currently driving. Really without it at full charge you should not make a range estimate for a bolt based on that screen. You said going up to half would be 80 miles thats a total guess and because the range meter is going based on current driving no one knows what that driving is.

    • @EVeverything
      @EVeverything  2 года назад +1

      Yes, you are correct about the 3 different range estimates on the Bolt's gauge cluster. Not sure where in my video there was conflict with that, but this is also not an exact measurement as you also indicated. The estimates could be totally thrown off by either a really efficient driver or inefficient driver, so the new owner will see an adjustment once they begin driving the car in their own way. I am only trying to offer the estimator as a way to get an idea of battery health, until we get better ways of verifying like some kind of industry standard to measure battery health that is made available to buyers by the dealership.

    what year did leaf get the high mileage

    • @EVeverything
      @EVeverything  2 года назад +2

      2018 is the model year of the gen 2 Leaf that boosted range from about 107 miles to 150 miles of driving range. In 2019 the PLUS variation was added, with an even larger battery to get a max estimated range of 226 miles on a LEAF S PLUS (SV & SL ranges slightly lower). So any LEAF 2019 or newer should give you a choice of battery packs offering either 150 miles or over 200 miles of range.

      Cheapest model s in Sweden right now is almost $40 000 and it has ran over 400 000 km. Interesting thing is that the guy who owns it has range tested it and it had lost just 10% range. That was also what cars diagnostic told so it added up. Guy is on RUclips as well, that's how I heard but his channel is in Swedish and not the most refined.

    Buying a used battery is economic suicide. It's not a device you can deplete the battery before replacing. It could show the battery is 80% but if that doesn't get you the distance you need to go you get to replace the battery at 80%. Used electric cars don't sell very well on the used market for a very good reason.

    • @EVeverything
      @EVeverything  Год назад

      Not sure I understand your reasoning. So it's a bad idea to buy any used EV? I've almost exclusively bought used and will continue to do so based on my experience, which is that even the worst condition batteries (Nissan LEAF) have a long and useful life. I'm on my third LEAF right now, a used 2013 with 2 capacity bars missing but that still gets me over 60 miles of range. Teslas are known to have minimal degradation even at over 100K miles. I can't imagine where all these used EVs and their battery packs would be going if not to 2nd and 3rd owners on the used market like myself.
