Side by Side Comparison - Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro versus 4Runner TRD Pro! Which one is best?

  • In this video I compare the features of my cement grey 2017 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro to those of my super white 2021 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro. Both are amazing vehicles and far superior to other options in their segments. Both are extremely reliable... both are a ton of fun... both look fantastic and both sustain top-tier resale values.
The 4Runner TRD Pro epitomizes the Toyota philosophy of simple, durable and comfortable. The Tacoma offers the functionality of a bed and was years ahead of the 4Runner when it came to interior tech.
Can you go wrong with either option? No.
The uniqueness of my Tacoma makes it more special to me. Between the TRD Pro exclusive color (for 2017); Cement Grey and the Icon Stage 9 suspension kit... it just feels amazing.
The smooth delivery of power feels better in the 4Runner with its 4.0L V6 tied to the ancient but rock solid 5 speed automatic transmission. The Tacoma leaves you wanting more when it comes to power delivery... BUT like I say in the video, it makes up for that in its numerous other perks.
What do you think? Which would you pick and why?
    Thanks for watching.
    -Stay Untamed...

Man, I was on the fence about both too! I kept going back and forth, debating. What made it even more difficult, was the very limited supply of TRD Pros, because that’s what I wanted. The thing that killed the Tacoma for me, and why I went with the 4Runner TRD Pro, was the lack of interior space (after just owning a Ram crew cab for 8 years). I finally got to test drive a Tacoma TRD Pro, and I liked it, but my fiancé kind of gave me the “meh” face and told me that she thought the truck was “dinky.” Lol
I ordered myself a ‘21 4Runner TRD Pro, and I’m not looking back. It’s roomy, tough as nails and also approved by the better half. Hahaha

Mike, you definitely made the right choice. The Tacoma is a great vehicle for a young man to introduce him to the brand. A 4Runner is a BIG boy vehicle though and simply rugged. The Tacoma looks more like one of those surf crabs you see running along the beach. It is more of a boy toy than a truck. It is much too small in the back for most familes - hence why it is decent for a 17-25 year old bachelor.

I had to transport a simple push lawnmower while I didn’t have a truck (when we had the FJ, LC and 4R)... and something as simple as a lawnmower proved to be a huge headache... took it in the 4Runner and it wasn’t ideal lol... it smelled like gas for 3 days .I then vowed to always have a truck bed.

Great comparison! Thanks for info on RSG sliders. If you haven’t already, can you do a full comparison of the angled vs flat? They are the best. Are the angled sliders awkward to step on getting in/out? Thanks as always! Btw, 4Runner all the way.

I hear people say this all the time “but it’s made in Japan” is there that much of a difference? Both are still made in a Toyota factory with Toyota parts. I have had two Toyota’s made in Japan previous to my Mexican built Tacoma and I don’t notice the difference

Heck even desks and other big things are much easier when you’re not restricted to a ceiling. I loved a push mower in my “old” AG 4Runner and the cabin smelled like gas for a few days lol...
