4runner all the way! I saw way too many negative reviews on Taco's 3.5 motor and the tranny. 4runners 4 L is a beast and even sounds more like a truck than a car. Those massive hvac and 4x4 knobs in the runner also gives a very manly feel when grabbing it rather than Taco's tiny knob. Proud owner of a 2018 4runner Sr5 premium here.

I went with the 2013 Tacoma because honestly I like the look better than the newer Tacoma’s but mainly because it’s got basically the same 4 litre as the 4Runner. Still want a 4Runner too though.

Test drove both the same day either way its. Toyota your not gonna go wrong either way just a matter of what our uses are. The Tacoma is still gonna be more reliable and offroad stock vs the Fords UK engine ranger and the Colorado known for having weak frames

I’ve had both. I traded my 16’ Tacoma and got a 21’ 4Runner. I couldn’t stand the auto transmission in the taco. It was always in too high of a gear. 4Runner has smooth linear torque every time you push on the gas.

Overall ride quality, I'd have to agree. There's nothing that I like driving better than a 4Runner regardless of generation, period! Super fun off road and great on the highways, they look great and are small enough to manage even when you do get stuck. I've always told my wife that I like her '02 4Runner better than my '03 Tacoma in the snow....and no the Tacoma's not bad at all as I usually have some firewood rounds (and removable winch) up against the cab in the bed and a topper that adds plenty of weight in the Taco. On both occasions while driving off in Tacomas, I've almost gone for the 4Runner instead. The fact that I always have a couple malamutes with me and don't want them inside means I need a bed!

I own a 2003 Tacoma PreRunner that I bought new. It now has 120k on the clock and is completely dealer maintained. It's a terrific truck and I'm still not tired of it. I feel it drives just as well today as when I bought it new. It's now a 3rd vehicle for me and doesn't get driven more than about a 1000 miles a year, but I can't imagine getting rid of it. I like it that much. It's hard not to like a Tacoma. Good review! Thanks & Good luck!

Great video, well done. I’ve had a 2015 Trail Premium with KDSS for a year now, done probably 2k or more off-road in SW US and love it. For what it’s designed to do, it’s the best vehicle I’ve owned in decades of driving. It’s no BMW, but I like driving it on road, and LOVE it’s capability off-road. Can’t speak to the Taco, but if I needed a pickup, that’s the first place I’d look.

The mid-1980s 4Runners were the most durable vehicles ever made. My father had a 1986 4Runner with manual transmission and it had 500,000 miles when he gave it to a friend (who kept driving it for several more years). Back in those days, the 4Runner came with a 4-cylinder engine which was lacking in power but it ran forever!

Own both. 07 taco, 18 runner. Too soon to say for certain which one I like better. However, my taco has gotten me home from places it shouldn’t have. The runner is amazingly comfortable and smooth as a full time family vehicle, but off road capable as well. One thing to consider is the enclosed cabin in the runner. All my hunting/fishing gear rides inside with me and, well, it stinks! But it also provides as a mini sleeping space if/when necessary. But honestly, can’t go wrong with either choice.

Technically the Tacoma has a higher tow capacity but the transmission will drive you crazy when you driving highways speeds on a steeper grade. I haven't towed with the 4Runner so not able to attest to its capability but I have a feeling it would be the better option assuming you're under the tow capacity.

In fairness, the 4Runner interior has been refreshed in 2020 so some of the complaints you had about the interior may not hold as much weight if you were to compare it to a 2020 model. Obviously you're reviewing what you have, and I get that, I just thought it should be noted.
Fantastic video! It was extremely informative and put together in such an easy way to follow along. You also expressed yourself perfectly in the sense of voicing your opinions, but also understanding that there is no right or wrong and a lot of it is subjective. That's rare to find these days, so well done!
I have a 2018 Tacoma TRD Sport and I can relate to a lot of what you said in this video, especially when it comes to the transmission. It's probably the worst traditional automatic transmission I've ever experienced. The only thing worse is a CVT, imo.

Noa HNLSFO1 I went with the 6MT on my 2013 and loved it. However the funny thing is that you could only get the 4 door short box in a manual transmission in Canada. You could not get them as an automatic. So you could point out if a Tacoma was a manual or not, wasn’t very common. However in the US the 4 door short box are everywhere and offer both manual or auto.

2020 4runner fixes some of those interior issues. Comes with big screen, Apple car play and safety sense. Still missing few items that Tacoma has such as BSM and parking sensors. I picked the 4runner cause I found it more comfortable especially since I was coming from a tundra. Found the tacoma uncomfortably for me (bigger guy). So far I’m happy with my 2020 off road premium but I do miss a bed at times! Power in 4runner is adequate but used to driving a big V8 so wish it had some more HP. Nice comparison!

I actually recently bought a '15 Tunda double cab SR5 4x4 with low miles. Really like it but with just a level and slightly bigger tires I went from about 15.5 mpg to 13.4 mpg and it is a daily driver. I test drove a Tacoma and 4Runner and hands down like the 4Runner better but I have had a truck since around 1995 and am scared to not have one, although my bed really only gets used during deer season. I'll prob. keep the Tundra a couple more years and see what the future brings for Toyota.

@@layne4376 because build quality suffers when cars are made in Mexico. Ideally, one would want a Japanese car built by Japanese workers. Toyota is moving Tacoma production from the United States to Mexico to save money, which they will at first. But when build quality suffers, and some other manufacturer steps up to the plate with better reliability, sales will decline, and Toyota will eventually lose money. That's why it's a short-sighted move by Toyota, which is unusual for a Japanese company. Eastern philosophy historically takes a long-sighted approach to many things, unlike Western philosophy, which is generally short-sighted.

Good comparison! I have 13 4Runner Trail Edition, which is the last year before the mid cycle refresh. You make a good point about the interior being dated, I certainly feel that way about mine at times. I do like the simplicity of it, and even though the knobs look dorky, I find them highly functional. I also agree that the interior seems well put together, I wonder if the difference is the fact that the 4Runner is assembled in Japan, while the Tacomas are made in Texas and Mexico?
One thing I do find the interior a bit lacking is in the storage department. It would be nice if there was some room to store things under the rear seat, and more storage cubbies in the rear cargo area. On the other hand, I appreciate all the room in the center console, and I like the large pockets in all four doors.
Another thing I like about the 4Runner over the Tacoma, is the seating position. My 4Runner has a height adjustable power driver seat, and you're able to raise it quite a bit to get a more upright position. When you sat in your Tacoma, you look like you're sitting very low in the vehicle. I prefer a more upright seating position, as if I was driving a full-size truck, and I can do that in my 4Runner with the power seat. I also feel that allows me a better view over the hood, which will help Offroad.
I also agree that that four-wheel-drive shift knob looks cheesy, mine is a Trail Edition which is the older version of the TRD off-road, so it has the manual lever. The lever looks much better, and is very satisfying to use, haha.
As far as fuel economy, I actually find the 4Runner fairly good for what it is. While it's rated for 20 Highway, I can exceed that pretty easily. Mine's all stock, down to the tires, so that's probably a big part of it. But I consistently average between 20.5 and 21.5 MPG. My best tank ever was 24.5 MPG on a 450 mile road trip that I was able to do on one tank.
I might actually give the nod to the Tacoma in the looks Department. I think that's a terrific looking truck, and it's also available and some great colors. I think the front end of the taco is much better looking than all the different versions of the 5th gen 4Runner. I find all the front end to the 4Runner fairly awkward-looking. from all other angles I think it looks terrific, I love how the fenders bulge out. Whenever I park mine, I always look back at it as I'm walking away and think damn that's a good-looking truck.
Oh, and I like the new wheel setup on your taco.
    Also, that's a beautiful house!

I have a 2nd Gen Taco and my wife has a 5th Gen 4Runner. I just ordered another 5th Gen 4Runner in army green and was going to replace her 2019 in nautical for the 2022 but now I’m debating on selling my 2nd Gen taco and keeping the new 4Runner for me which means we would have 2. Should I or shouldn’t I. Keep in mind that my taco has a camper shell so there’s not a whole lot of use for my bed as it sits but it’s lifted with 33’s and looks so good (mgm color) what to do? 🤔

You CAN get a long bed (6') 3rd gen Tacoma in the 6 speed manual transmission - however it is not going to be a full cab, only an access cab. They're rare but can be found after some dedicated searching. I have one.

A lot of fanatics will follow their preferences over #'s and facts. I have a 2018 TRD Off Road 4Runner. (not the premium) I did extensive research into the facts, #'s, peoples bias's, preferences, pro's and cons before I ever test drove for myself. The fair reviews of the vehicle I purchased were dead on. It is not perfect, however, it is nearly perfect for what I wanted. It does it all really well. Taking the Off Road over the Pro saves many pointless thousands of dollars. Most people that buy these things modify. Since I was uncertain how much and or how fast I would do my own personalizing, it made no sense to dump the extra $ into a pro. The capabilities are identical. Actually, I take that back. When I was buying, the Pro did NOT have the KDSS option. And I very much wanted the KDSS. It is a game changer. That on road stability then the off road articulation is amazing. Would not want it any other way.

Interesting comparison and analysis. I've never driven a 4Runner but I do have a 2018 Tacoma TRD Pro. Having had 10 new Jeeps since 1979 I find the build quality of the Tacoma to be excellent and would never go back to a Jeep. Given your analysis I would probably be even more impressed with the interior build quality of the 4Runner. Nevertheless, I do prefer the overall look of the Tacoma over the 4Runner but, as they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

@@JJ-ls7fq Yes, I suppose it is. Being a bowhunter where I need to get in to some tricky places, I always needed a solid 4-wheel drive vehicle. For years I purchased only Jeeps until I became disenchanted, not with their 4-wheel drive capability in which they are excellent, but with the rather "cheap" feeling interior. Because my hunting vehicle is also my daily driver I wanted something with excellent 4-wheel capability with a little higher-end interior. That's when I discovered Tacomas in 2013. I loved my first one and I love my 2018 TRD Pro. I will likely never go back to Jeeps (aside from the fact that I'm getting older too).

5th gen 4Runner is basicly a landcruiser Prado. Many think the GX is a prado but the 4runner and gx are identical frame down. GX has a v8 but its much heavier than the 4runner so it's weight doesn't make it much faster. Anyway, 4runner all the way.

It depends. If you're going to use your vehicle for work, a business and play then go for a tacoma. If you want interior space, you dont tow much, you want something a little bit luxurious and with comfortable driving especially on road, Go for the 4runner and with the far rear window down you can get some fresh air in. 4runners are also easier to park in tight parking structures.
They're both very good vehicles. 3rd Gen has a strong following all over the world and 1st Gen Tacoma also has a strong following especially after the toyota truck impressing the world.
