Thanks alot Randy….I was just in the process of adjusting the squelch on my UV-5R and accidentally hit the transmit button. Now helicopters are overhead, FCC officers are repelling down ropes with machine guns, and a couple of black Suburbans just pulled in the driveway.

Roger beep confirmed. Just heard a new ham operator on repeater with Roger beep on. I started to laughing about it because I knew what was going to happen. Then the sad ham had to educate the new operator about Roger beep. I about lost it. LOL. JUST LIKE CLOCKWORK

I think every friday, should be Roger Beep day... just to screw with the old head hams! As they are bitching at someone, interrupt their conversation, with your Roger Beeping radio! It'd probably drive someone to have a stroke! 😲🖕

@@chrissewell1608 I'm 50 some of the people my age and older are just a pain in the ass to deal with. I try to irritate the old geezers when I get on the repeater and talk about gaming with a buddy. Back in their day, they transmitted up hill both ways and like the repeater with no traffic. And it's club members. Meetings are fun sometimes because I call out their bs.

The first thing I always do is to turn the Roger beep on. If you were not expected to use the Roger beep they would not have created it in the first place. The sad hams need to understand this principle and follow it rather then tell others to turn it off.

    As always, great content Randy.
I programmed a few repeaters in my baofeng 8 watt radio with n771 antenna.
I have a bunch of them for emergency use.
And I'm getting my technician license, but don't have one yet.
I asked for a radio check to see if the thing was even able to hit a repeater 8 miles away. It did, and I got yelled at for not having a call sign. jeez. I had to know if it worked!!!!
I got jumped on like I was a criminal. I won't transmit again until I have a call sign. The Ham crowd is alot more stuffy and smug then the CB folks I remember from my teen years.

There appears to be no difference of squelch setting on mine either 0-9, all have same amount of static also UV-5R8W. It's hit or miss, and doesn't seem to accept the setting until you back out entirely with EXIT sometimes. Oh the days when there was just a simply KNOB to turn to squelch instead of having to navigate a menu and confirm stuff.

I've noticed something. Why is there this deep desire for licensed HAM operators to showoff their callsigns . For instance when they write you an email, or comments, they always get that callsign in your face somewhere...somehow. It's like a trophy they need to rub in your face. I swear one of these days a HAM man is going to do an obituary in a newspaper ending with his callsign.

Dear Naughty Rubicon, I have a D Head question: When using tone squelch (R-CTCS & T-CTCS on simplex) on a Blue Fang Radio: does It matter what level I have my normal squelch setting set at? For example: If I have my Squelch set at the highest level (9) and my radio hears the proper squelch tone: Will it open up my receiver no matter how weak the tone signal coming in is or when using tone squelch should I always have my radio's Squelch set at the lowest level (1) So I can hear my friend's cries for help fading away in the distance as I drive away not paying attention because I'm preoccupied eating cheese puffs?

    • @TheNotaRubicon
      @TheNotaRubicon  2 месяца назад

      Because either:
      1) The 5RM does not support it
      or
      2) The guy that made the program did not include it

      @@TheNotaRubicon I'm have to assume UF-5R is a typo.
I followed the instructions, after I overcame my fear of bricking my $30.00 radio, in "Adjusting the internal Squelch Levels" following the link you provided (using the values in SPREAD 6).
I bought a kit of 2 radios which came with 2 USB programming cables (and a bunch of other stuff) and they work. Software found the correct com port and the brand and model were in the drop downs.
      It really made a difference.
I can now scan, with squelch set to 7 without some random noise interrupting every 30 seconds. 7 has a value of 50 and when it does break through the squelch it is a strong signal; almost full bars but lower and what I can only guess is machine noise that is not properly shielded breaks squelch regularly across the scanned frequencies.
I watched the video and maybe when you tried the software or the firmware was not up to the task. The software does warn Baofeng is constantly changing firmware.
      Firmware BFB298.
Stll watching your videos because you teach me something new in every one. Thanks!

Yes it could! I think NAR suggested setting it at 9, I think. I usually set them at 2. If it is higher than 2 or 3, it will reduce your ability to receive weaker signals.

    • @TheNotaRubicon
      @TheNotaRubicon  3 года назад +2

Probably not.. But to find out for sure, press the monitor button on the radio, or set the squelch all the way to 0 to see if you can hear whatever you arent hearing. When the squelch is off if you are hearing stuff, then, the squelch was too high.
Having another radio to compare with would also be helpful.
Most times people have complained about receiving poorly, it turned out there was just nothing to receive.

Is there a way to decrease the time the radio emits the squelch during scanning? It sounds squelch for 4sec before moving on…..

I prefer tone squelch (CTCSS on receive). Of course, the transmitting station has to use CTCSS also (on transmit - duh!). As mentioned, RF squelch is $#!T on the inexpensive radios.

You pretty much forgot the most important part. Would I set my squelch to 9 if I wanna hear someone 2 miles away. Or would I set it to 9 to try to hear only a neighbor chat with me?

The higher the squelch setting the more it blocks, the lower its set, the more you can hear.. You can confirm this by setting it to 0 to see what happens.

For just a second, the mic you're using looked like it was facing away from you. I was wondering how you were getting such good clear audio with the mic facing like that. Then I realized it was an optical illusion lol.

The Baofeng UV5R is also not certified to transmit on VHF marine channels, and if someone does that they will be intercepted by a squad commissioned by the Admiralty and brought aboard a Skipjack class vessel for a hearing about their transgressive transmission.

Should be mentioned the Baofend UV5R is as well not permitted to transmit on UVHBAKL (Ultra Very High But Also Kinda Low) gubernatorial guards channels, if they do they will immediately be exiled to the Sahara desert

i just need to know, the Baofeng BF-888S, can it be programmed to turn the mic on and off remotely? Why ask this > The red light indicating active mic turned on while on charge. i sat at my desk working when i saw this happen. Sorry to hammer on this stuff but i help people and hear a lot of personal problems. i need to know if i can trust this radio or not. The Baofeng BF-777s light did not turn red they are both located on the same table next to each other.

Never heard of, nor can I think of any possible way for someone to remotely turn the mic on or off.. However a faulty-ground can cause the mic to turn on, and the setting can also cause the mic to turn on... If you're that worried, just turn off the radio when charging, or even better, remove the battery from the radio, and only put the battery in the charger.

Thanks for the video! I have a UV-82HP that I use for strictly monitoring GMRS or whatever while I'm out off-roading and the squelch sucks on it. Constantly hearing static and it's soooooooooo annoying. I have the chirp software and I will try that "fix", good luck to me. This is my first radio after my Motorola talkabout (which has no static problems) and I haven't been impressed with it because of the static. Thanks!
