  • In this video I show you an overview of the Baofeng UV-5R ham radio. Everything in this video also applies to other Baofeng radios like the Baofeng BF-F8HP, Baofeng UV-5X & UV-5G as well as rebranded Baofeng radios like the TIDRadio UV-5R and TIDRadio GM-5R radios.
I review all the buttons, and all of the basic operations of the UV5R.

This Happy Ham has several. The oldest is about 6, maybe 7 years old. The poor thing's lived a hard life, but it's still ticking. The backlight LEDs gave up the ghost a few years back and the volume control got scratchy (cleaned right up)...and the SMA antenna connector has come loose a few times, but the radio still works just fine. Best twenty I ever spent!

I belong to a small hunt club, and 3 years ago we bought about 10 of the F8GPs from someone who supplied them already programmed. None of us are tekkies, and all of us have our radios locked. So we don't screw them up. I just bought a back-up UV-5R, and was nervous about setting it up. Figured I didn't really need to program it for basic Send/Receive operation. Your video confirmed that, and provided clear instructions on what to do to get it working, plus how to manipulate it and the others we have, if we ever want to change anything. Much appreciated!

I'm listening to you for the last hour, you're both verbose and terse, which is interesting, you also relay the information clearly without bs annoying editing and distractions.
Anyhows, I'm a software engineer and I have 0 knowledge in frequencies and radios, I just remember as a kid that my friend's dad had a big fat radio thingie with bulbs on his desk and he would show us some amazing things from live communicating with people around the planet (I guess that's called low freq, right?) to listening on weird recorded signals and cryptic messages (like directions or something). In anycase I'm looking to get into it.

Not my favorite, but definifely one of the best radios in existence. Not because of the spurious emissions, poor quality, etc., but because it is cheap and extremely versatile. I got two more on the way. Of the six I've bought since the unlocking video, they're unlocked and working great except one which always resets itself when recharged (but stays unlocked.)

I got my general license a few years ago. Unfortunately the local area repeated stations have been 'less than operational'...so I stopped ham-stuff. I'm .ca clinical engineer in a local hospital and the covi d thing kept me running like a lunatic for 18 montgs..how retired...dusted off my balcony and ready to start again.
    Local ham club can help.
Sub'd to your blog...thanks for all the great info' & entertainment!

A nod to KROQ, nice. Thank's for the videos I decided to go with the UV5R to see if I even care about radios. Like many I just want to talk to my 4x4 buddies, perhaps I'll go with a midrange radio later.

Most don’t. They just keep a few on hand as they are disposable. You won’t feel terrible running over a $25 radio when you have a spare back at base camp. However a An exterior antenna is a worthwhile investment
