Still - very little can compare to that first time you "get the radio to listen only" and, you know, act real sneaky and push that little button. I've been on the run from the law since. So worth it.
I've pushed the button on my UV5R a ton... I use it on the repeater on the university campus I work for, it's a business license frequency, so it's perfectly legal where I live in Canada to use it for that purpose. 😎

I'm still new to ham radios and still learning about this one. Thanks for your informative videos, I've learned a lot about this UV-5R watching them. I might even hold it up and pet it some day.
I still have my 1967 ARRL handbook, full of beautiful photos of hand-built tube-type amateur gear. Back then one really had to know how this stuff worked. Nowadays the ham can buy gear with features not dreamed about in 1967. For less than $40 one can find a Nano-VNA, then find a video on RUclips to learn how to operate it to tune an antenna. You don't need to join a club and take a multiple-guess test in order to operate a radio. I have been doing the 11 meter thing since the 1970s, and have worked as a broadcast engineer, but have never had the desire to join a club or take a test with somebody watching. Creepy.
The FCC was indeed empowered to make rules by Congress in the Communications Act of 1934. Don't know what Congress has empowered the ATF to do. Don't really care.
@craigdavidson2977 those rules can not Constitutionally have the power of law. The Constitution only gives Congress the authority to make law, and it does not grant them the power to delegate that authority. That is why some rules of the ATF and EPA have been overturned by the Supreme Court lately. It's just a matter of time before someone with enough money to pursue a case against the FCC brings about similar results. The Constitution trumps US Code all day, every day. Period.

Can i ask, why do people on HAM radios just chat shit. Its just announcing their call signs, asking about the quality of the transmission and then the next person does the same. Do you think HAM operators touch themselves whilst they use the radios?
In the 80's to about 2000, a local repeater had users that discussed interesting stuff, and I learned a lot. I was sandbagging, I just had a receiver. I couldn't afford to become a ham.
I listened a few years ago to 3 local hams that would talk most mornings. They were all old men and all they did was complain about how cold it was that morning. I would always listen very early but after monitoring the local airwaves I decided to never get my license.
Thank God, I am 70 years old. I just got a pair of TU-UV88 Analog Two Way Radios and accidentally pressed that bad button. I have been reading about Ham Radios but just wanted to try it out!
These radios are so darned convenient, it would be a shame not to use them, and I do like the Roger beep. Thanks for another great video; keep 'em coming!
It would have been a hoot if Josh had poked his head in at the last moment and said because he is a ham and was in the room that the transmissions were actually legal under FCC ham radio third party rules which allow non hams to push the button.
I am a federal employee who can not get a radio license because i have a felony conviction. (That makes sense, right?). My felony was more than 20 years ago, and my license approval has been pending for quite some time. I finally got my wife a call sign, and I spray spurious RF electricitys over many frequency bands with my baofeng uv-5r and btech 40w amp. GMRS, MURS, FRS, and I plan on even more. Oh, and I take longer breaks and lunches than I'm supposed to, but it's good enough for government work.
I got the same issue. I'm more interested in the experiment end of the radios than the actually talking to those I don't know part, but I'm not moral enough to legally press to talk. Hauling 45k lb of flammable liquid in tractor trailers is fine, talking to strangers is verboten. Figure that one......
Hams cling to “licensure” so that they can posture as something. Just anything, aside from a social defective.. So when you diminish the prestige of being a “Licensed Ham Radio Operator”, you’re sort of chipping away at the only thing that they hang their hat on as “something interesting about them as a person”. A ham ticket is a fishing license. I could pass a tech exam on any given afternoon.. And so could most people with 25 minutes warning an a pamphlet to read. But I don’t, mainly because I’m not interested in volunteering myself for another government registry, of which anyone can query and gain my personal information 🤷🏻♂️. The radio hobby is available to me either way.
There are multiple cases where the courts have upheld that anything that can be done without a license cannot require a license. We the People are the Body Politic, the power lies with us, not govt agencies that are not chartered by Congress and have no Constitutional authority to exist.
Interestingly enough after following a hunch, I went to MacArthur Park downtown Los Angeles. There for over two decades illegal aliens have been able to get Social Security cards and drivers license, etc. And sure enough wouldnt you know it, you can also get a ham license. Cheaper, and no test.
I pressed the button with no license. FCC showed up at my door and I told them "oh my...the license must have gotten lost in the mail" Then I slipped the agent a $20 bill for his troubles.
Last hamfest, I was told I "just lost my license" after a particularly sad ham took offense to my roger beep. Luckily, the event hall had my license in the lost and found section.
I have a UV-5R. I'm not a licensed ham user. I have pressed the button many, many times. I also don't talk to ham operators or interrupt any emergency radio frequencies. I do use it on FRS and GMRS frequencies without a license.
We just got our set up and it's for an emergency to keep in touch with family within 10 miles. Seems dumb to get a license for something I will use during a tornado or a serious commutation outage. Not implying I am right but id the government wants to come after me during a crisis, it isn't my government.
*Someone clicks button without call sign* "I felt a great disturbance in the airwaves, as if millions of voices suddenly keyed out in disbelief and were suddenly very indignant. I fear something terrible has happened."
You're right of course. The FCC will likely do nothing. Partly because many amateur radio operators are taught to ignore the trolls and partly because of FCC bureaucracy. I'm guessing their enforcement works about as well as the ULS. Not very well and only occasionally.
Most of our government are do nothing pencil pushers. Ditto state governments. Let me put it this way, Michigan has a state EPA. The Federal government has an EPA. Neither of them prevented Flint Michigan's water from being toxic. And last I heard it was still not safe to drink. We could fire half the government and the only people who'd notice would be the unemployment offices.
Its important to understand the reason for the emmissions laws, and licensing is to keep the radio spectrum usable. Else if anyone transmitted on any frequency, the spectrum would become chaos and useless. On the other hand enforcement action will not be taken unless there is a complaint. An example using a licensed freq allocated for someone else, and they complain of interference and/or you are using their channel and its disruptive to their business. When you transmit it can jam or prevent other from using it. The more power you transmit the more range and the more you can " shout" over others. Stick to the rules so all can use the spectrum is best.
Why not simply get your license and reap the free info you learn while doing so? Life is full of choices. It's the reason we are here on earth. Are you suggesting to everyone it's OK to not follow laws, rules and guidelines? There will Always be opposition in All things. It's your choice to the character of a person you want to be. It's only 25 multiple questions to answer to get your license. And they give you the answers to study!
Also… I have a lot of respect for ham operators and can understand why they try to encourage people to get their permission slip. One of the main reasons by far is that ham operators have a code of conduct which they follow and adhere too. There are other reasons as well, but this one is above all else in the Ham world.
I have a the same radio that sits on a charger as a weather radio. But out of curiosity.. do you spend much time talking to people on those radios? Or do you just collect them on shelves? Just wondering
Where I live is rather rural, it's hunting season, and I personally enjoy hearing all of the activity on my radio. Tons of simplex chats going on all around me. None of which I'm sure are licensed. I don't really care either way. Glad to hear people enjoying themselves other than listening to dead vhf air.
I just want to thank you Randy. The ham people with there test and bullshit stories about enforcement really turned me off to radio a few years ago. And thanks to you and your truth telling I am now back into radio.
when you transmit on a HAM frequency, you do not, for obvious reasons, announce your (non-existing) call sign. Does that trigger sad HAMs to report you to the FCC or some other kind of authority? Or do the sad HAMS tell you to get off "their" frequencies?
I think after your 4th drunken keying up weekend over Bob's long transmission, telling the story of his families trip to Texas, the fox hunt guys will come and poop on your car hood for sure. I pushed that button once. I thought that no one would notice. Next morning, around 6 AM, the FBI knocked down my door, kicked my cat, pissed on my radio, and handed me a mean letter from the FCC. True story.
So, this is the way it was explained to me by my next door neighbor who has been a ham operator for a better part of 45 years. It has been years since he explained it so I maybe a bit wrong/off. The only way they can pin point your location is by pinging between towers which is not accurate to the exact location. Also that the FCC doesn’t have agents out in the field trying to catch people. So in other words, anyone can use these devices without worrying as long as they are not messing with airplanes, the government or the military. What say you??

I remember back in the late 70's/early 80's (in SoCal) listening on my scanner to local ham radio users. Some guy that called himself 'Trailer Tony' was continually interfering with this one repeater. Numerous complaints were filed by the owners of the repeater but to no avail. It took the owners of the repeater to triangulate his position, turn this info over to the fcc, and all the fcc did was take the guy's equipment away. That's it. We dont want to register anything but we complain of others being here unregistered... think about the narcissism and cognitive dissonance that makes this thinking sound rational to us. Control or Overlords my a$$, it is us we hate. Try to build this infrastructure yourself, see what you get... Heck try to build anything without any of the above, what do you get, nothing. These divisive statements are misplaced. If you want to make a beef, look into the uber wealthy who hord most of the wealth for themselves by buying legislators and controlling wealth, more tax breaks for the rich, anybody? Dont get distracted by fake strong men shouting divisive quips, they are wrong.
Thank you sir for putting all that out there. RIP WB5LIK never forgotten
I don’t care if you get your ham ticket or not. Keep producing these videos!
You are good at this
Agreed 👍
Don't worry, he never will. This guy literally hates everything about the government.
I think it might be ok to push the button as long as the Roger beep is turned on.
Suffering the wrath of having your roger beep turned on seems more sure and swift than any government consequences.
Still - very little can compare to that first time you "get the radio to listen only" and, you know, act real sneaky and push that little button. I've been on the run from the law since. So worth it.
I have had mine for a month now and still haven't pushed the button. 😂
I just make up random call signs 🤫 73’s - EVRT3T it is However, extremely important to read them out in military phonetics to “fit in”
@@RustyZipper This is a great idea. We should pick 1 call sign and have EVERYONE use it.
I've pushed the button on my UV5R a ton... I use it on the repeater on the university campus I work for, it's a business license frequency, so it's perfectly legal where I live in Canada to use it for that purpose. 😎
Yet I cannot use GMRS channel 16 in my area in Washington. Thanks Canada, LOL.

@@Slotty_Botfast are you saying that you're not willing to violate the rule about Line A but you’re ok with disregarding other FCC regulations?
It may be legal, but I still reported you to AARL.
I'm just saying, the humor value of you getting a recommendation for this is almost worth it.
Love your shirt! Merry Christmas my Radio King!
Hahahaha, ok you got my subscription on this one. I've had my UV-5R for a few years and use it mostly as a scanner but do have one FRS frequency programmed in it to keep in touch with another friend up here in the mountains. I use CHIRP to block the transmitting on the police frequencies (the kids love the little radio) but wont pay anything to the FCC just to talk to a friend.
Creepy.
If the ATF can not make law by imposing rules(SupremeCourtRuling), neither can the FCC.
Hmmm, you can get arrested for breaking an ATF rule. If they cannot make law, then why can you be arrested for a rule break?
@@43wagonwheel what does getting arrested have anything to do with anything? Last I head, an arrest isn't a conviction.
Period.
@jeffjames1746 does it matter if they have the power of law when they can come kill you, imprison you, and/or drag you through court bankrupting you?
Nothing will happen and you know it.
A very happy ham operator
🎉
Love your channel
Please tell that to all the sad-hams that keep telling us we'll go to jail and get a $250k fine.
Im no expert but I did sleep at a Holiday Inn last night… I think this channel is top shelf.
Fun fact, the FCC callsign database is available online. Pretty easy to find a callsign to use there 😂
Or just make one up on the spot to confuse everyone?
Probably more common than we imagine!

Am I the only one who reads the comments on a NOTARUBICON video before watching the video? I mean, the videos are great, but the comments are the best part! 😊😊
You’re not alone. Furthermore, I want to add. I don’t even watch the videos, or when I do, it’s on mute. No idea what this guy ever says. I only come for the comments.
As a licensed ham, Technicians Class, for well over three years, I have no choice but to respond to this video in like manner.
Therefore, I am going to power-up one of my rechargeable Midland FRS "Talker" radios, key the mic, and repeatedly call "CQ" using my callsign.
1934 was over 150 years ago? How time flies.
Yes it does go by fast. Seems like only 89 years.
lol… I was wondering if my maths were really that bad…
Well, the EIS wrote the script I guess...
I was just thinking the same...
Hahaha I scratched my head after that one and wondered if this dude is even to be listened or accepted as good info after that one. 😂
Can i ask, why do people on HAM radios just chat shit. Its just announcing their call signs, asking about the quality of the transmission and then the next person does the same. Do you think HAM operators touch themselves whilst they use the radios?
Its because most hams don't have any sort of interesting life so they have nothing else to talk about.
I'm sure some buttons were pushed.
Randy, does love pushing some buttons! 😅
😂
Atta boy! 😂
It's not a hobby. By law, it's a service. If users don't begin better serving the public, the FCC can and should sell the VHF spectrum to others.
Always appreciate your tv backgrounds
There are multiple cases where the courts have upheld that anything that can be done without a license cannot require a license.
We the People are the Body Politic, the power lies with us, not govt agencies that are not chartered by Congress and have no Constitutional authority to exist.
Interestingly enough after following a hunch, I went to MacArthur Park downtown Los Angeles. There for over two decades illegal aliens have been able to get Social Security cards and drivers license, etc. And sure enough wouldnt you know it, you can also get a ham license. Cheaper, and no test.
Nice!
No such thing have be listed in the database so um no there is no faking it
Can you send me one?
But, did you get cake?
I wonder why all the call signs are BR549.
Thank god I was scared for a long while now thank you man❤❤❤
I pressed the button with no license.
I pushed the button without a license. I died.
Then who is posting?
We just got our set up and it's for an emergency to keep in touch with family within 10 miles. Seems dumb to get a license for something I will use during a tornado or a serious commutation outage. Not implying I am right but id the government wants to come after me during a crisis, it isn't my government.
You are most definitely wrong Randy, something happens...a demon grows his horns or an over weight dude chokes on his moms meatloaf, i forget which...
You made me choke. Too funny.
The answer is IBS from hell. Randy can confirm.
Leave my mom out of this, and I'll leave THIS outta your mom...
Amateur radio is supposed to be self-regulating
Bro, I was having many sleepless nights and nightmares before seeing this video.
Now I think I may be able to sleep peacefully. Thank you
You Sir are wonderful!
Nuff said.👍
Thank you kindly sir!
Careful Randy. You don't want to get in trouble assuming that person/individual/poster/internet-user is OK identifying with the gender you used.
It's so fricken' easy. But there are people who also think its ok to shoplift at the dollar store and goodwill. Where he probably got his radios....
35 not 25.
That is some satisfying sound coming from that noise hole. Great job.
Wait, so a lightning bolt won’t be thrown from the sky if I push the button without receiving a blessing first?
Also… I have a lot of respect for ham operators and can understand why they try to encourage people to get their permission slip. One of the main reasons by far is that ham operators have a code of conduct which they follow and adhere too. There are other reasons as well, but this one is above all else in the Ham world.
I have a the same radio that sits on a charger as a weather radio. But out of curiosity.. do you spend much time talking to people on those radios? Or do you just collect them on shelves? Just wondering
I use my radios when I go off-roading with my friends and when I lead large groups of (100+) vehicles in off-road events.
@@TheNotaRubicon that’s awesome. I got mine in hopes to have more opportunity to use it… sounds like I may have to get into off-roading now too 😂

No more gravitons or graviolies for you!
Why do you capitalize the word ham? It’s not an acronym, also when talking about radio it’s not a noun.
They do in my small town... All boomers.
Ask this question on radioreference. Ever single "some people" are there to answer your question.
Unless you get on a repeater, most likely nobody will know. Most ham simplex frequencies on VHF and UHF are dead quiet.
I think after your 4th drunken keying up weekend over Bob's long transmission, telling the story of his families trip to Texas, the fox hunt guys will come and poop on your car hood for sure. Then they will make sure the car is upside down. Even Hoffa feared the hams. I'm sure the FBI will call them the next terror group needing to be investigated for ... well.. being boring.
They tell you to get off and some will change the tone frequency to stop you. Using a repeater that is.
I must admit that I pushed that button last night and spoke with Xenu who told me to ignore the sad hams.

I haven't watch the video yet, but I can tell you what happens. You make a lot of sad hams even sadder.

That's it. He bought more equipment a a local swap meet and was back in business in no time. What a sad joke.
