On January 31st, 2001, Japan Airlines Flight 907, a Boeing 747-400 en route from Haneda Airport, Japan, to Naha Airport, Okinawa, narrowly avoided a mid-air collision with Japan Airlines Flight 958, a McDonnell Douglas DC-10-40 en route from Gimhae International Airport, South Korea, to Narita International Airport, Japan.

I concur. I thought it was very harsh. But the Japanese in general are strict on efficiency and process. For them making "rudimentary errors", you know it would be a harsh punishment.

Welcome back! Unrelated note, isn't it weird how white text with a black outline against a white background is easy to read, whereas it would be next to impossible without the outline?
Another case of ATC and TCAS giving conflicting commands. It's good they mandated to obey the TCAS no matter what, ATC sometimes just doesn't know what the best plan of action is.

So glad you’re back! Here’s a quick suggestion, could you try to program the route into the FMC? I think seeing the magenta line on the navigation display and seeing the LNAV and VNAV buttons lit up would be a really nice touch

TCAS was ignored
@@PCReboot But it was ignored because the air traffic controller was telling them different instructions. When it comes to that, who do you follow (obviously before the 2013 rule change)?
@@Smacadamia *Always, always follow the ATC **_and_** TCAS instructions, with the ATC instructions in maximum priority **_over the TCAS instructions_** regardless of what the TCAS says to the pilots.*
JoM Squared Videos because back then, there wasn’t official procedures on whether to follow ATC or TCAS as priority. ATC was likely unaware that either aircraft had TCAS as it was relatively new.
I usually watch the most famous channel when it comes to plane crash but I think I like yours best now.

Absolutely the controller's fault: you had one job... Pilots should have followed TCAS which was made law later. Rule One: always, at least, have your safety belt loosely fastened. ADS-B should help a lot now so the pilots can decide for themselves.
Tip for X-Pilot editor: Make sure text transitions happen just after a scene change, and avoid a scene change during a text block.
Controllers need to realize that the blips on the screen are actually hundreds of lives in each target; luckily HUNDREDS of lives were not lost....

If I am not mistaken, a few years ago a "hit" situation on the ground took place with an Air Canada flight, 759.

OMG, 4 trainers total.
If I hadn't already followed this particular incident, I would have bet it was going to be pilot error. The deep descent saved them all, trainee learned a hell of a lot that day. Excellent decision that saved all their lives, 4 were hospitalized for quite some time though.

This exact thing happened to me on an American Airlines Flight from Philadelphia to France back in January 2017! I was over the Atlantic looking out of the left side of the plane when all of the sudden another plane flies right over us, no more than a couple hundred feet away. I don't think anyone else noticed this or said anything about it but there is no way two planes should be flying that close.

JAL 747-4 w/ no winglets looks odd at first, but after a bit it looks sleek. Real glad no loss of life on this incident.

This was more on the ATC trainer. It sounds like he wasn't paying close enough attention to what his trainee was doing. Plus, he got the flight numbers confused.
