Nissan Diesel Swapped Oliver OC-3, Twice the Power! (if it runs)

- This Oliver crawler loader popped up for sale, and I had to buy it because it was cheap. When I looked at it, I discovered that it was really unique, because someone swapped in a SD22 Nissan diesel 4-cylinder with half of the transmission from a 720 pickup truck. This is my kind of toy!
The original Hercules IXB-3 gas engine produced 29 hp at 1700 rpm, and the gearing in the OC-3's transaxle was known to be too high. The new (80's) 2.2L diesel should put out 61 hp at 4000 RPM, and with the half-transmission reduction it will have plenty of torque. Now I just need to make it work...
One thing I love about Low Buck Garage video's, you get a vehicle or project and when you find bits or parts missing, you are not phazed. You carry on and get to making it right. Other people seem to be a bit down about stuff like that.

Watching Musti1 completely changed the way I look about wrenching now. He just laughs at everything that goes wrong and goes on. My dad was a man that always shouted and got angry when stuff did not work first try. Needless to say that I avoided learning anything from him after a while. It took me a long time to shake this negativity off. Nowadays, I allow myself more badshit goes wrong, and there is SO much more fun about that! You get tons of stuff done by being only 80% good at it, instead of waiting till you got 99% perfected. Making old machines run and then driving around with it just for shits and giggles... That's what's it all about.😁

My great grandfather was a fixer at the Oliver plant in Charles City Iowa for his entire working career. I like to think a little of the tinkering bug is genetic, from him.

The mechanical humor is epic! Opening up someone else's can of worms is always an eye-opener and good for a few laughs.
That threaded pipe joint is almost 100% for a jib boom ….. looks like they used 2-7/8”s just get a joint of 2-7/8” drill stem and thread it into the joint and cut to your desired length letting you lift stuff higher than the loader frame can lift … while also increasing leverage and the center of gravity and possibly flipping the machine over. It’s fine..
My tractor has a pipe on the top of the bucket just like that. It is for lifting and moving fifth-wheel RV trailers.

That's an awesome little rig! And it has to be the least amount of work you've had to do to get a new project running. And that makes it even more fun because now you've got some real incentive to keep going.

I think those were Maintenance Bees doing some general upkeep on your Nissan engine... Looks like they did a good job keeping it alive. You should take them on as staff.
Can't wait to see more of this! The sd engines are durable, no timing belt no chain, all gears. For sure the cast iron head is a nice thing too. It's great to see one of them in something like this!
Well Big Mike, you got yourself a nice piece of machinery for scrap price! It's been neglected for sure so just take it 1 piece at a time & slowly replace parts. You'll have some fun w/ it. Having been on an 8 N tractor 55 of my 71yrs I noticed your 3 point hitch articulates as it goes up & down. That's very unique. And the attachment appears to be a '' Plow Pan Buster". So I can certainly see why it came out of a field. Back befor bigger gas & Diesel tractors were prevalent a crawler was probably the only way to pull a pan buster, but like you said that crawler had too high of a low gear, and model A tranny's became scarce, so upgrading to 2Xhp was the next best thing. I wonder how well it worked out. 2 Cycle's lend to supercharging easily if you don't get crazy. Just add a small turbo & Voila'. Ha! Fine video Mr. Buck. This a a "normal" 4 stroke diesel engine.
Had one at a job years back. Cracked block with a catch can. Was a useful and loyal machine

What a cool little machine! Very unique, and with its little modern quirks, it is more powerful and you can find parts, like you said (and already did!). I think it would be very worthwile to go the full mile. New hoses, etc.. We all know you will! It will be awesome to watch you fix

Dang I do t really like to comment on videos but this was just to cool . I absolutely love old mechanical stuff in this manner especially when someone is gonna refurbish it for actual work.
You have a good buy there, Go right through with this project and I believe you will have a great winner the punters will be biting your hand off for this
had a OC 3 that had been cobbeled severely. Straught dozer but came with a home made bucket and hoe bucket. Cracked piston but finally got it to run a little. Also it over heated in reverse. It would die an not start for days. It had a seized Hyster winch that was 4 sizes too big. I finally sold it to go to college (at 39) had three HG models too. One was a Cletrac, about 1939. They were all fun.

I like this dozer and the work you did to get it started and figuring out how to make control works. Change all tubes weld all cracks on bucket. and this machine needs a real paint job. I know you listed all things necessary first but this girl deserves a new dress. Amen

That unit may have diff stearing. Looks kind of leathel useful from an Australian perspective. Keep your toes away from the chain!
That piece of pipe welded to the top of the bucket is awesome you are going to love it , for slings and chains lifting stuff . For loading stuff into a bin you tip the bucket forward and it pops the sling or chain off so you don't have to get off the tractor as much .

Excellent video Glenn :) also be interesting on that Oliver dozer was used on farm for Tile Drains feilds bleeding water out to septic tanks put trench then hoses to from hole in bucket for pipe and John Deere pick to on back ! Motor I know of Oliver used was Oshkosh in 4 and 6 cylinders gas or desiel motor like farm tractors had ! Also be cool see more on video's fix up Oliver Glenn and also used to possibly to! Also I know most Desiel motor turn key to on postion then push throttle to 1/4 on , glow plugs handle or button on for 30 seconds to 1 min then start button till fires let off glow plugs switch and start switch on starter! Then let warm for 10 mins ! Also some head lights plus cab fenders lights be cool put on see at night uses! Also roof plus roll cage too ! Hose are drie rotting called it Glenn should be fix up too agree or big showers of hot oil not fun ! But did well buy on it I say hopefully will seen more working on it! You like projects too Lol !
The later Nissan 2.7TD that the USA never got has an extra water temperature sensor on the thermostat housing.
The glow plugs turn on when you switch the key to the "run" position before starting it....and when the light goes out you can start the engine
(I usually don't even have enough time to buckle my seat belt after turning on the key to the "Run" position until the glow plug light goes out and I turn the key to "start" ...which it does instantly)
Then the sensor controls the glow plug relay and intermittently gives the glow plugs current until the coolant temp reaches 50C...which makes sure the engine keeps running and doesn't stall even on the coldest days)
then switches the system off until the next start.

Love your videos (new subscriber). Change those hoses before you or someone around you gets hurt. Hydraulic oil under the skin is no joke. If I lived closer I'd make them all for you free, just to keep it low buck for ya. Of course though, you would have something to new looking on that beautiful machine. On a side note, never get paint on your hose (there's a pun there) it'll make them dry rot faster than the NM sun.

The round device on the side of the fuel injection pump is the hand priming pump. Screw down when not in use. The Governor is a pneumatic type and depends on the vacuum from the throttle body on the inlet manifold.

Ah automotive education, an adventure of its own kind, a fascinating one, learning about past engineering and vehicular construction.
Looking forward to the next one. The hydraulic fluid looks like the fire proof type we us in the Die Casting Industry.

Very cool video thank you for showing. I have the same machine with the same bucket loader system. I have no engine and no sheet metal and no transmission but I picked up a Cummins four-cylinder from a generator hopefully someday I’ll put it together, but I kind of doubt your video did give me hope.

I own one of these,pull that cover off the end of the final drive sprocket and check the lug nuts/bolts. They like to back off and sheer off and you can't see then with the dust cover on.

My 2 cyl Isuzu diesel tractor uses that throttle plate as the shut down. You throttle down the engine to idle and then starve it for air until it stops. Detroit diesels had an emergency shut down damper in case the fuel rail got jammed or it started running on oil from broken turbo seal.
On this Nissan that throttle body feeds a vacuum signal to the injection pump...it controls the quantity of the fuel being injected.

I had one of those,it was heavily worn out but i replaced whatever i could..the engine finally quit so i put an engine/trans a flathead 4cyl from 46 willys cj2a

My brother had a company board f250 pickup truck, late '60s, brand spanking new from Ford to the dealer, they took out the Ford engine and put in a Datsun 4 cylinder diesel so they could use it underground in the limestone quarry. They had to install the slave cylinders for the clutch or it would creep through a stoplight intersection. Oh what a truck.

That object on the rear of the alternator was, indeed, a vacuum pump.
It is, of course, ruined since it has to have a constant supply of engine oil piped to it to lubricate the vacuum pump...
then the "used" oil goes down the same tube to the sump as the air which the pump spits out to create the vacuum for the brake system on a pickup or other vehicle that requires it.
(Can also provide vacuum for a hydraulic clutch power booster)

Well that was a wonderful exercise to wake up to this morning. And I didn't have to watch "man O man here we go a gain blah blah...." My two favourite companies Oliver and Nissan. That is very small but very useful. A high speed modern engine with triple the HP 😂 awesome 👍😎
A great little machine. Those hydraulic hoses are another story. Could get expensive. In either hoses or spilled message oil.

A guy I used to work with put a diesel Nissan engine in one of those years ago. Would've been around 1992. That box with the gauges looks rather familiar too. I'm sure there could have been many swapped like that.

Unscrew that spring knob and pump up the injection pump that will help to start it, and put gasoline on a rag near the breather, way way better for the head gasket ,,,thanks BigAl California
