    Loving Studio One here... The best bits of FL with a linear workflow like I had in Sonar for years. A few irritations but that is pretty much every program, none are perfect. I like how Studio One pretty much stays out of the way. Like you, I have a lot of VSTs so I need my host to be able to deal with that, and, mostly, stay out the way! Thanks for this vid MG, informative, esp for someone just getting started I'd think... BTW I'm a year 15 like y'all, reinventing away...

    No wonder why omnisphere always sounds super pristine. They use all the best of the best to equipment to make it. Probably a similar techniques they use to make those deeply multi-sampled kontakt libraries. If anything their transparency really proves that you can't cheap out when it comes to quality and its giving me ideas of what sort of high end mics and effects processors they use to capture those sounds which are obviously worth the price tag. Great question and answer.

    Another good post, keep it up.. I'm new to your page. I make boom bap beats experiment with some minimal and loft .. I've been working in Reason since 2003, never liked working with Ableton or Maschine (sold my licenses very early on).. I never really needed a VST until I tried Serato Sample --very dope and very freeing--- everything else I need is native Reason for the most part. My process is straightforward :sample, process, chop, sequence, mix.. and my sample selection and drum design sound fresh but I do feel like my production should sound more umm .. 'modern' for lack of a better term.. still working on it

    I'm a new subscriber and honestly wasn't expecting to see this anywhere on RUclips - truthful, hype-free and informative opinions on gear in the context of modern reality. Are you even from this planet?
    I can't recall if you mentioned it, but have you taken a look at Reaper? It's very inexpensive at $60 and has an incredibly flexible feature set that you can extend via scripting. The down-side, however, is the steep learning curve. That, and the UI requires some personal tweaks to be made friendly for a workflow that isn't just acoustic recording. It's a very powerful DAW and I'm starting to prefer it to Studio One.

    I have to say I am EXTREMELY IMPRESSED with Studio ONE pro as an all-rounder value for money package. When I first bought it, it came with a tonne of instruments built into it's flagship synths. I had the symphonic library bundled. But then they kept throwing extra VSTs into this bundle that came with my audio interface. I got stuff like uJam Virtual Guitarist (Sparkle) and Virtual Drummer (PHAT) out of the blue over a year after I purchased the audio interface. I got a bunch of other stuff I regularly use as well. These weren't just junk plugins.
    I highly recommend getting Presonus Audio interfaces because of the tight DSP integration they have with their DAW. No other hardware manufacturers make a DAW that is as good as S1. So the integration is gold. Even as a producer, consider getting StudioLive3 rack mixer as your audio interface. The FAT CHANNEL built into it is amazing and it will change the way you record. The vintage plugins for the FAT CHANNEL dsp like the LA2A, 1176 compressors and the Pultec EQ are things I use in every song. I use the software versions that come bundled with S1, but I use them at record time, or I can apply them with zero latency for live performance when engineering for live music thanks to the DSP. It's a strategy which will future-proof you.
    PS, the StudioLive3 mixer can record directly to an SD memory card in MULTI-TRACK (up to 30 tracks at once I think depending on the speed of your SD card), so you can take it on the road without a computer (the rack version would be good for this).

    Really informative video man. I've been leaning towards Ableton because of the integration with the SP-404 and also to be able to take advantage of the sound design tools I've seen guys using as well as the groove pools. Studio One started to look really good too, seeing you use it and realizing that there are a lot of the things I want out of Ableton in Studio One have mad me start looking into it more. Probably going to hold off and watch for sales and also to just mull it over so I'm happy with my choice. Thanks brother.

    I pretty much start everything in Maschine standalone. I come from a hardware back round too. I have Komplete 11 Ultimate which I'm surprised that you didn't mention at all. I love using Komplete with Maschine and a list of other NKS plugins because I can dial up the plugin and all of it's presets right from Maschine. I'm a tactile guy, and I think that's great. Once I get an idea up and running, and it's time for some serious arrangement and mixing, I move everything over to Cubase. Cubase has EVERYTHING that I need to finish a project.
    I just want to mention that I also use Ableton Live 10 Suite and Push 2. I've been a Live user since version 4 or 5. My workflow with Maschine and Cubase are a lot like my workflow with Live by itself. Maschine is like Push 2 and the Session View while Cubase is the Arrangement View.
    I would also like to say that EVERYTHING that you mentioned that Live, Studio One, and Logic can do, can all be done in Cubase 9.5 Pro. Warping, time stretching, warp markers, etc......

    • @MGTheFuture
      @MGTheFuture  6 лет назад +1

    • @kb420ps
      @kb420ps 6 лет назад +1

      MG The Future yes. Some of the features are buried in menus and it's not immediately accessible as it is in Ableton which makes it seem somewhat counter intuitive, but that's something I got more comfortable with once I leaned the program more.

    Really after I asked you I end up downloading the demos for reason, Studio one and FL. And what you describe in the video I’m back to studio one and FL.
    Reason looks similar to SO in many ways but I enjoy SO and I find it intuitive.
    Then I really like FL studio. For some reason I find it fast to lay ideas down on the piano roll.
    I have a Launchkey mini that I use to lay down some melodies but I’m not a good player of keyboard. Specially with both hands. I mostly use it for one hand input.
    I don’t have a particular style of music I want to make. I like just about everything. If I could I would mix country hip hop dance and rock music in to a single song. I like variety.
    I like to create on the piano roll. I haven’t got in to samples yet but eventually I want to be decent all around. I’m not planing in to getting any other hardware beside the Launchkey mini. I’m better at guitar and I have an acoustic and an electric that I like to record to add to my tracks. I do plan to use them in both PC and Macs.
    I think eventually I wanna to learn both studio one and FL studio.

    I made the jump into Native Instruments recently. Purchased the Maschine Jam which came with NI Komplete 11 Select and then I upgraded to the Regular version. That way I could finally get my hands on Kontakt and Massive. Paid it off in 4 months through Zzounds. Bought some nice 808s from Big Werks for Kontakt and some presets from Studio Sounds for Massive. Purchased the Fruity version of FL stuido as my daw. FL studios website has a Template for The Jam controller. It works pretty good with FL Studios software on its own with out the need to rewire the two softwares together. I find it very convenient to be able to use the two together. Would definitely love to have Nexus in the mix for sure. Got my hands on Avenger for now to hold me over

    Studio One v1 when I bought a Presonus Soundcard (Audio Box one) which came with Studio One v1 on a CD.been using ever since. I'm not an expert but somehow, get stuff done because it's an intuitive DAW! I no longer use Cubase. I do have Reason Essential, Ableton and Machine on my PC, Logic on my Mac. I still bought the Omnisphere, Nexus and Komplete Ultimate. But it is like you said, "horses for courses" Sometimes you gotta just .......dive in!

    This is the best breakdown of DAWs on YT. Most of these guys just be like...its whatever fits you..what a cop out lol.
    But i agree how you're judging the price based on VSTs and I also rely on all my own VSTs and don't really depend on any included plugs. Which is why for value i eventually settled on Reaper with Ableton as my 2nd.
    I downloaded StudioOne4 Prime and like it alot but i can't use my own vsts. It actually reminds me of Reaper with just more better GUI. In fact I think Studio1 got the best looking GUI out of the DAWs.
    I would of never even discovered how insanely powerful Reaper was had Ableton been able to load my VST3 and 32 bit plugs.
    I think Ableton is the best for beginners and has the best sampler and easiest to use audio warping functions. I like to get my creative juices flowing in Abletons clip screen then actually take the stems and refine em Reaper.

    Great, down to earth, advice. Let me suggest another full featured DAW for Windows users; Cakewalk.
    It used to be Sonar and it was $499 for full version. However, now it's free for the full version. A company named Bandlab bought it from Gibsin and they offer it absolutely free. No catch. And, it does almost everything Studio One 4 does including ARA integration.
    I used Cakewalk (Sonar) for years and highly recommend it. I just started using Studio One 4 because I felt I was getting stale and needed to learn a new DAW. Both are dope.

    • @MGTheFuture
      @MGTheFuture  6 лет назад +1

      Does it support vsts by chance?

    • @samson7842
      @samson7842 6 лет назад

      Yes. and it comes with quite a few of them. They're good quality, too. At least the effects are. The instruments are "bread and butter" sounds. However, to me, it's always lacked a great sampler. It has one, but it's limited. But, getting the DAW for free, a person could pick up a good sampler of their choosing and still not be broke. Here's a link to the download page. Check it out. I'd love to hear your impressions of it. www.bandlab.com/products/cakewalk

      Cakewalk is nice, handles VSTs well and is a mature program that can do almost anything, no pattern editing tho. I was looking for some kinda mpc vst thingie when Studio One 4 came on the scene. I loved Sonar but I love Studio One more. THAT SAID Calkwak is FREE so if someone is on a tight budget and wants some legal action, Calkwak can do the job very well...

    • @samson7842
      @samson7842 6 лет назад +2

      Michael McCarthy no, it has a pattern editor. Through a redesign of the piano roll, a controller pane and track pane. Plus, it has that step sequencer. The redesigns were done a little bit before Gibson went belly up.
      But, you're right about Cakewalk not having (and needing) a MPC style sample player. I ended up buying Maschine to fill in that gap. Which for me, was over-kill. I barely use it for more than creating drum patterns. I wish it worked more as a standard VST inside your DAW because I hate it's song mode. So very unintuitive for me.
      But, I'm loving Studio One 4. I'm having a lot of fun creating with it and learning it's ins and outs. I'll always love Cakewalk. But Studio One has a definite edge for the moment because of their sampler, pad style sample player and the chord track.
      As you said, Cakewalk will get the job done, tho. It's still a beast in it's own right. Plus, it's free. Can't go wrong with that. But, if a person can afford it, I'd tell them to get Stufio One.

    I think Bitwig Studio deserves an honorable mention. It's very similar to Ableton Live but it has some things which Ableton doesn't. Ableton is bigger when you consider all the FX and instruments that come bundled with it, but I feel like Bitwig is more intelligent than Ableton. I've been using Ableton since version 3, and I've switched to Bitwig for that kind of work. I still use Studio ONE when I do traditional recording and mixing.

    Yo MG great video again! I find myself routinely listening to your Discussion style non music tutorial videos amazingly to their full length ROFL 37:58 rarely do I make it to the end of videos on youtube. I'm more of a daw noob but I've noticed Logic is more straightforward from a computer user standpoint, right click context menus, controls to open popout menus, and most items listed in the window dropdown menus entries including hotkeys, the look of some of the older plugins makes me want to hurl tho they really need to be reskinned, and the 90 different ways to create drums is a little unsettling. Reason has a steeper learning curve but is super neat cause it's reason, rly who doesn't want some low cost virtual hardware to goof and get exposure/experience ($99 off your sale purchase price if you have the intro/lite version so you can get it on sale for $199) reason annoyingly uses function keys on a mac so you'll need to disable the std keys or hit fn every time. Studio One offers an upgrade model from almost any daw that saves you an additional $100 dropping it to $299. Just got Bitwig and a lot of what it does isn't as obvious, like for example turning on a virtual keyboard if you don't have a midi keyboard (just hit caps lock which also locks out the other keys that don't comprise a piano keyboard, an annoyance in Logic Pro). Midi editing using number keys to switch tools, the way you open close devices/browers/pianoroll etc, all of this isn't as obvious till you read about it once then you realize it's set up very elegantly and is much more designed for ease of use, that being said there doesn't seem to be as many learning resources for it. Also wanted to mention I just bought Rob Papen Go2, if anyone wants to get into sound design I highly recommend it! It's cheap has some great sounds and most of the settings can be seen from the main window. You can see what's set in the XY/performance style pad you see the osc wave type; Logic Pro has Alchemy with awesome patches and an amazing performance section (the default patch will teach you a ton as will almost all of them) but damn it takes forever to dig through the interface to see how they set everything up in the multiple panes etc. If you are the kind of person that learns from reverse engineering patches Rob Papen Go2 is a great starting place and its really cheap too $49.

    Hi , bro actually i trained my self to use maschine for full project production , mixing , arrangement and for mastering i send it to landr , i stick with Native instruments products ( Massive , monark , kontakt ) ,i like to focus more on flow not on the vst's.

      Agreed, workflow is everything. And depending on your skillset - its all possible. I just have so many samples, that I need Audio / Midi features to really use them the way im accustom too.

    Good review. I started with Logic 8 though I hated the environment but I'm glad I stuck with it. LPX is so much fun to play with (usually!!!) I find I make music every day. 20,000 presets? you put me off considering Omnisphere. I'm too old to audition all those presets (I may change my mind). I love old school synths sounds. Like Arturia V Collection, Synth Magic's emulations & UVI's Vintage Vault. (I don't know what Ghost channels are? I'll have to look it up)

    • @MGTheFuture
      @MGTheFuture  6 лет назад

      Ghost Channels allow you to see One Channel Midi, while modifying another. So I would see the notes of a sample from Melodyne on one track, and trace it for chords or baseline on another.

    Im a long time protools user and honestly I can make beats just as good and just as fast in it as i do in fl!!!!! back in the days protools was an all in one package from and interface to mixing and so. also protools comes with all the midi functions and wav stretching needs plus it comes with tons of plugins and it gives you abelton lite and so on it used to come with reason to rewire. so its a strong competitor to studio one. not only that ALL major studio run a protools setup so it would be easy to transition from home to pro studio or send of session for mixing and mastering

    • @jnyce283
      @jnyce283 6 лет назад +1

      just saw where you talked about pt and it has a midi sequencer built in or midi editor i used to run my yamaha w7 and boss dr 5 and let the dr 5 run the keyboard and i would track in eventually i went straight midi then tracked it in and so on

    • @MGTheFuture
      @MGTheFuture  6 лет назад +1

      Yeah, pro tools is cool...until we get to pricing. Then, ghost channels, audio to midi, step sequencing, vst support.
      If all my plugins worked in pro tools, it would be like logic for me.
      If it handled midi like fl or studio one, then it would be dope
      But it would then still be over priced, etc.

    • @jnyce283
      @jnyce283 6 лет назад +1

      understandable! I feel fl is best for sequencing but has all the function as abelton when it come to routing. the idea is you cannot click in melodies but actually play. Warp is better then the standard protools stretching. On the otherhand protools nowadays is a subscription base software like adobe products. Most vst's has a RTAS version u can install and theres also vst Wrappers and since you can rewire you could use all those in fl studio and so on. Gotta remember about 90% of hip and RnB is all done in PT!!!!!!

    Hey MG True... I used to use Logic for Vocals and mixing and reason for composing (2002).... Logic left Windows :( jumped to Cubase to replace Logic. Tried all sorts of DAWS But when Reason 10 came, I had to upgrade .... love it though as you said, it lacks the extensive wave editing tools that I even enjoyed in Cubase SX (can You imagine SX ?). If now I had to choose to start over again, I will get into studio One. Dont have enough time to re learn and unlearn and invest more money so I am gd wont be leaving this DAW

    I know you now have a desktop but since you had a laptop before for your music production it would be great if you could make video with advice/tutorial how to manage VST, Samples, sounds and DAW files.
    What you recommend leaving on internal drive VS what you recommend keeping on external drive
    Or better to keep current projected saved on internal or external and other advices like that.
    I’m planing to get a MacBook Pro and was debating if I should get 512gb SSD or 1TB. Or if 1TB is even enough

    • @MGTheFuture
      @MGTheFuture  6 лет назад

      Ive never produced on a laptop. And how much space you should get depends on how many VSTs you own VS everything else you put on your machine. Macs force most of your stuff to go onto the internal drive. And if your internal drive is SSD, then likely you would also wanna keep it that way.
      Programs with 30GB+ libraries prompt you to goto another disk usually. But how many of those do you need? etc
      I have everything I use on my internal drive primarily. The only stuff I have on external drive is stuff I don't need to access daily (Photos, Music, installers, etc)
      I have some VST libraries there too, because they don't come on disc anymore.

    Greetings in the name of Great things, Futuristic MG. I trust that all is marvelously well on Your side. Just one question from My side if I may. Which DAW, then, has the best sound, or high quality sound? Seasoned engineers or Producers often assert that there is a difference in sound quality from DAW to DAW, and it is said that FL studio has the worst quality of them all. Could You please be so kind as to touch on that notion as honestly as You possibly can. When You first explored Studio One version 4, I believe You mentioned something about the sound quality or it having a superior sound engine, this confused Me because I thought that it is all Ones and Zeros and what goes in comes out exactly the same. I hope I am making sense. Thanking You in advance.

    • @MGTheFuture
      @MGTheFuture  6 лет назад +1

      Yeah, nothing sounds the same from DAW to DAW. The important question is "does it matter". Today, not really - as most new songs appear to be FL studio and not mixed very well. I wouldn't get caught up in that older paradigm today.

      Bruh.. Everything sounds like absolute trash. Sound quality is obsolete you can basically use the worse mp3 drum samples run it thru FL lowest quality render and you will probably still sound better than Kanye's or even drake's album masters.

      @theJezreelSoUniversal 6 лет назад +1

      DJ Audeze - Thank You ever so much for taking the time to make a healthy deposit to this subject and edifying Me in the process. I am a nobody and know absolutely nothing about this sound engineering and music production space that My only response in the matter is to keep quiet and absorb as much as I possibly can. It is rather unfortunate to discover that Sound Quality is obsolete and but a myth because I try to append quality to everything that I do. Seeing that I Am chasing a ghost I will just choose One (Excuse the Pun. LMHO!!!) and just do the best Deep House that I can. Peace and Light, Fam.

    Brilliant vid man , I can relate to the maschine over lap because I only use my maschine as a vst within Ableton for drums and I can easily do that in Ableton itself , my question though is does Studio one v have a 'scale ' like midi effect like Ableton because I find that extremely useful or would they be any similar vsts like 'cales ' let's say for Mac ? I'm really swayed towards considering studio one now

    • @MGTheFuture
      @MGTheFuture  6 лет назад +1

      Not yet. It’s piano roll snaps to scale. So you could play any keys you want...snap..then drag up or down to conform. Also when drawing in this conform mode...you can’t draw the wrong key.
      But I’m familiar with the scale in live, too...which is very useful. Currently, autotheory and instascale do it.
      Another one I have, has this feature in beta...just like Ableton, I’ll talk about when it’s public. I’ll be using that in studio one

    • @MGTheFuture
      @MGTheFuture  6 лет назад +1

      Also, studio one has follow chords...which effectively snaps any midi track for you...chords, bass, and melodies..it almost replaces it

    Just one thing that made me a bit sad, couse i do use the MK3 and maschinestudio for beatmaking, is that you made it feel like it was kinda futile/useless if you had one of these daws.. (i got logic pro, but i bought that for my singersongwriter making, b4 i got into beatmaking. But I´m wondering if that still is the case, the "uselessness" of the maschine studio, if you want to use it as a live instrument, not just for producing beats??

    Umm best VSTi is difficult as I have an Access Virus TI, and a Moog sub phatty and I really only use the VSTi to control them sadly controlling Virus TI is just a pain as all the controls are set to Midi channel 1, so it turns into a full spaghetti head trying to find which filter is been tweaked etc lol. So maybe those, but as a full VSTi I enjoy Vengeance Sounds Avenger, and PH's Europa. As for DAWs Ableton 10 still feels like it is in Beta. Presonus Studio one 4 is very nice, Reason 10 is ok but I still hate the huge racks lol. Meh Avenger and Presonus studio one 4. I still want to add Nexus to my collection as I can see its a very nice and quick to get the sounds, which can often be a creativity killer for me.

    I don't think I heard about Studio One until you brought it up on your channel...I must've had the blinders on before that. It certainly is feature rich. Likewise with Nexus 2. I'll have to add that one to my GAS list. $249 isn't a bad price for me & just pay as I go on additional packages (similar to EZ Keys, I suppose).
