It's been five years and I'm still upset that Carly got voted off, especially after this performance. If it were up to me, it would've been her and David Cook in the final two.

I'm happy Andrew Lloyd Weber changed her song. She rocked that song. I love that movie, and she really owned it. Puzzled how she got sent home with that.
Still one of the best AI performances in the show's 15 yr. history. Electrifying.

omg, i've been singing this masterpiece for about 5 years and yet i think it is one of the most difficult expressively to ever be performed. Carly is a goddess, she is my greatest inspiration, i found out about her through WE ARE THE FALLEN, she is absolutely awesome, i would be glad like crazy if i ever had the chance to see her performing live. Too bad i'm not in the U.S.A. or something. Whatever !! Carly is the best !! Hugs from Greece !!
That was the very last American Idol show I watched. She was by far the most talented singer that season. There is no way she lost the count, it must have been a cooperate decision because she dosnt quite fit their Glam expectations. Glad to see her get signed with Moody and the boys. I dont even know who won that year.

American idol is so plastic creature. She has powerful voice but she's not plastic pop queen and they always expect another Christina Aquilera or something. All this show is just meh.
So Simon called this performance best performance of the night and she gets voted off after that? Did everyone even listen to him or did they disagree? To me it was one of her best.
Mizuka Young Honestly my assumption is she was voted off because people didn't like the song (not realizing it's Judas singing in the original play). It was a shame.
I loved this performance. I was so mad that she went home after that. That shirt was hilarious too.
Saw this when it premiered almost 10 years ago and I still got chills watching it today. She was good but I remember there being some tough competition that year. I remember everyone's favorite being the very young David Archuleta but surprisingly David Cook won that year, whom I really liked as well.
If you checked the Dial Idol website, you would have known David (Cook) was going to win.
I met her on the idol tour and have her autograph tattooed on my arm!!!
She was my favorite contestant that season, followed by David Cook... I really thought they would be in the top 2, facing against each other. I was literally in shock for about 5 minutes when she got voted off... This was one of the best performances of the night! I've never watched a whole AI season since. Carly got it all: personality, voice and striking stage presence.
I have always remembered this performance from Carly. It's my favorite of all from her. And hey! This video has received no dislikes! Great job! :)

She got voted off because she sang that song out of context. Americans are thin-skinned and found it sacrilegious. It certainly wasn't for lack of talent. Lloyd-Webber encouraged her to sing it, and Simon praised her performance, but they are both English and Carly is Irish. They couldn't have known how badly American audiences would react to it. (I could have told her, but nobody asked me.)
I think she knew, which is why it was her second choice. Brave girl. It's too bad Americans are so defensive.

@draimanfan1984 Oh please Carly Smithson is great but I've seen evanescence twice and both times she sounded magnificent.
I'm Dutch, and this season was the first season I ever watched. It was also the last, because I realized the show was rigged after Carly was voted off.
I think she was voted off that week because people with different religions may have found that... not right in their perspective, therefore they stopped voted for her.
The fact that she got sent home because the religious viewers were offended by this song

I started watching in Season 3, and ...whichever season this was...believe that this was the last one that I followed closely. I haven't watched at all in two or three years.
I always liked Carly, although she was my second favorite, just behind Syesha - the latter of whom I thought was the best contestant I've ever seen on AI.
And yes, I think this show has always been rigged - to a great extent. Even here, Simon hedges his compliment with a slight dig. The word "actually" is a giveaway...

If she'd sung Phantom, she might have made it to the finale. Her VERY poor choice of songs got her voted off, not her voice. You don't sing JC Superstar out of context in the US - it comes across as disrespectful and even sacrilegious to many Americans, although obviously not all of them.

This is NOT a religious song -- have you ever seen "JCS?" It's a deconstruction of Jesus and religion, and the bible. It's very "anti-religion" really. What this song does (and the musical's story arc and the rest of the score) is push Jesus off the Christian glorified religious pedestal he's been put up on for the last 1,976 years, and looks at him as nothing more than a man. Andrew Lloyd Weber has written some very controversial material. I LOVE HER VERSION OF THIS! CARLY IS AI to me!
I think it was because she just didn't have the likability factor of Brooke and Jason, despite being the better singer by a mile.

She definitely did not deserve to go home so early. I think it was mainly the fact that it was a religious song.
An example of an incredible song sung by someone with the capability of singing the sh** out of it. She was great, Lloyd Weber was right, and the judges' comments were inane, nonsensical.

I agree with you....Neither her nor Syesha should have been in the bottom 2....They had the BEST performances that night....Brooke should have went home...she f----ed up and had to START OVER...And she's an average singer at best...

3:27 This is the point where Carly lost American Idol. Normal people cannot relate to a person who has tattoos on their face. By marring a person who has tattoos on their face Carly became unrelatable.
