Carly came on this show to become known. Very, very few people in the United States knew who Carly was, so she came on the show for exposure and to build a fan base. I'm sure that Superstar, as a song choice, turned some people off but I would posit that it made a lot of people, old theater geeks, specifically, very happy. This is a great song that isn't on TV often. The tattoos are likely a net negative but some people out there like them and have them and can relate to her for having them
This and the rest of the original JCS songs cannot ever be touched. RIP Carl Anderson and thank you Ben Vereen, Jeff Fenholt, Ted Neeley and of course Yvonne Elliman. I like the effort and choice of music era these young people have though.
I still hold a grudge to this day that she was voted off. The only ones voting are the "tweeny" girls who like the cute guy. Even Simon Cowell said she was the "top 3 best of season 7". It should've been: David Cook (winner, the way it was), David Archuleta (runner-up, the way it was), Carly Smithson (Top 3), Michael Johns (Top 4), Brooke White (Top 5, the way it was)

It's the American Idol formula.....send a front runner home with 4 or 5 weeks to go....it gets people talking and keeps them watching to see who is going to win.....for example Jennifer Hudson and Chris Daughtry
the song is from Judas's persective and part of comedic musical, and has been used as a comparison to anyone strolling in and calling themselves the son of god. It's not a christianity bashing musical, its just entertainment and comedy, as someone who grew up in congregational church I think people just need to lighten up.

IMO, it's unfair to describe her album "Ultimate High" as a huge flop. The poor sales were mainly due to horrid marketing on the part her record label, not the music itself. Actually, as pop albums go, Ultimate High is quite good, especially considering Carly was only 16 when she recorded it. If you'd rather make your own judgment on this, several tracks from the album are available on youtube - just do a search on "Carly Hennessy" and sample a few.
I "voted" for Carly, ran dialing software on my modem to the tune of 600 votes per night, but I don't think for a minute that the fan voting is what determines who goes forward on American Idol. Has Syesha had a surge of popularity? Please! I think the show is cast with people and they know the demographics of the audience and tries to hold on to as much of it as they can. The ratings are in free fall this season because the manipulations are so transparent that people are simply fed up.

Sadly when i watched this season 7 years ago I knew she was going home because her and Syesha (the best performances of that week) were in the bottom 2 and i knew if Syesha was in the bottom the other contestant who was in the bottom was gonna go home. But Carly shouldn't have went home. she was my favorite ;-;

He's the president of an atheist organization in Texas, does many lectures, and runs at least two biweekly atheist podcasts. He was miffed at this, said she got robbed. I'm glad I checked it out. Carly was great at this song, has a beautiful voice. Hope she goes far.

Castro, Brooke White??? STUNK!!!!!! Brooke White screwed up during this week and started over...She STILL stunk and was one of the first ones sent to safety the following night...........Fans are so ignorant on this show...........
lloyd webber made her get eliminated! he made her change her song to jesus christ superstar which is a controversial song. she may not have gone home if she stuck with the ballad :(
