Rory On Air thanks for the reply, I know about the world of fixed wing and the route from 0 to the right hand seat of a jet (at least in Europe )the world of rotary wing is completely alien to me- especially the commercial industry. Hi great video. At the age of 49 is learning to be a commercial helicopter pilot a bit too late in life plus how much does this cost to achieve ballpark figure?
darren bridge blimey, that’s a tough question Darren. Given that you can’t fly commercially beyond 65 I think you might struggle to make back your investment but I’m certainly no expert. As for ball park figure, I think in the end you’ll need about 100k to get a CPL, type rating and instrument rating but it could well be more than that. Do you have a PPL?
darren bridge well don’t let me alone be the one to make your mind up. I think if I was you I would go for a ppl which is the first step anyway - plus it’s bloody good fun.
Hey man! Just lookin at helicopter videos on my nightshift.. starting school in Norway in february. And oh boy, am I looking forward to it..! What are some of the subjects you get in school? And is the math hard/advanced?
alex2410 Hi, congratulations! Exciting times for sure. Well it may be slightly different for you in Norway but I am doing 14 ATPL (H) IR exams. Everything from navigation to weather, flight planning to communications, air law to human factors. There is quite a lot of maths but it’s not advanced, mainly sort secondary school level and you’re allowed a calculator for most of it. I’m not brilliant at maths and I’m finding it ok so I wouldn’t worry about that too much. Ask your school to tell you what study material you need so you can make a start early perhaps? Good luck and don’t forget to subscribe. 👍
@@RoryOnAir Thanks mate! Oh.. I think its a lot of the same actually. I'm also up for then ATP(H)L course. Oh alright, then I won't worry that much..lol.. cheers!
Someone said it's better to learn how to fly in windy conditions, would you agree? If you let go of the controls, will the helicopter just slowly descend safely Strange Q: Someone said hovering a helicopter is like riding a unicycle while juggling (it requires immense coordination) is there an exercise to practice the coordination required to hover a helicopter? maybe not like riding a unicycle while juggling but something else
Hi, I think learning in windy conditions is useful but not essential for all the training. No, that is not how it works. In helicopters without stability assistance you will crash if you let go. I think it is a bit like that and it does need a lot of coordination but practice makes perfect.

Rory On Air I have seen a lot but clearly not all your videos, I’ll have to work my way through.
I’m not sure there are many left in the uk now, when we needed a pilot for test flights we had to get him out of retirement! Good luck with the rest of your flying. 👍
pete86uk ah that’s interesting to know. Maybe I’ll have to go to the US and ask to borrow the Red Bull one from Chuck Arron.
Rory On Air. thanks for the info. Nope no ppl. Guess I’ll have to leave it in the dream folder.
darren bridge well don’t let me alone be the one to make your mind up. I think if I was you I would go for a ppl which is the first step anyway - plus it’s bloody good fun.
Rory On Air And if I understand right that’s the best part of 12k for a PPL (H)?
darren bridge it wouldn’t depend on the length of time it takes you and the schools prices but yeah, something like that I would think.
Oh alright, then I won't worry that much..lol.. cheers!
Is that you Colin Furze? :-D
ahcmit I’m flattered! His videos are amazing.
@@RoryOnAir No thank you! Very good presenter. I am new to your channel and enjoying the content, keep up the good work!
ahcmit that’s very kind of you. I’m delighted you’re enjoying my videos. Stay safe!
Someone said it's better to learn how to fly in windy conditions, would you agree?
If you let go of the controls, will the helicopter just slowly descend safely
Strange Q: Someone said hovering a helicopter is like riding a unicycle while juggling (it requires immense coordination) is there an exercise to practice the coordination required to hover a helicopter? maybe not like riding a unicycle while juggling but something else
Hi, I think learning in windy conditions is useful but not essential for all the training.
No, that is not how it works. In helicopters without stability assistance you will crash if you let go.
I think it is a bit like that and it does need a lot of coordination but practice makes perfect.
@@RoryOnAir appreciate it thanks mate.
Rory if you have ever flown the VskyLabs Cabri sim on XPlane 11 can you comment on how accurate it is ?
I haven’t I’m afraid - I think if I got sim gear at home I’d never get any work done!
@@RoryOnAir Cheers for the reply 🙂
How old are you Rory?
32 I think... ;)
Why did u take ur jumper off? Is there a video ?
I was too hot…
@@RoryOnAir video? On when
I think Harry and Sam will be disappointed with the 189 !
Really? What makes you say that?
@@RoryOnAir I have many friends who fly the 189 in the offshore sector and they say the FMS is an in-house bodge job, the autopilot is very poor but AW are working on a software up-grade. The pilot presentation of systems is great though
Ed M interesting insight - thank you. Do any of your friends fly the S92? What do they say about that?
@@RoryOnAir Hi Roy, I fly the S92, I've been on the fleet for 3.5 years and love it, finally a big twin with an APU ! I flew the Super Puma (Loved that machine) for many years and the EC225 (didn't like it). The 92 is good, the display to the crew is easy to read, great FMS and plenty of power, even in the heat. The only negative I have is no cockpit door, you have to climb in though the main cabin
"Choz eye bell it "
Aye! 👌🤣
How much did the course cost?
It was £60k when I did it but check out Helicentre Aviation's website or facebook page for current prices.
Part of my brain sometimes thinks about becoming a pilot, while the other part of my brain knows that doing so would result in me going into overload
And i sometimes wonder if i am not much more useful than a chocolate teapot
There’s a lot to take in!
Ok.
What happens at helicopter pilot flight school, stays at helicopter pilot flight school
The MicroPilot ha ha ha - I should have said that in the video. 😂
why are you all wearing epaulettes.
Because they're training to become commercial helicopter pilots.
It’s part of our uniform. It says ‘Student Pilot’ on it. I think it’s pretty standard and commercial flight school.
@@RoryOnAir I'd be proud of them aswell, I would even wear the uniform to go shopping at tesco 👌👌
j reilly30 ha ha - it looks a bit like a security guard uniform at a distance so I’m not sure about that!
