    Transcript:
MV Bright Field was a bulk cargo ship that collided with the Riverwalk Marketplace shopping complex in New Orleans on the afternoon of Saturday, December 14, 1996, after losing engine power. The vessel was fully loaded with grain at the time of the incident. The United States Coast Guard investigated and cited the cause of the engine failure as a poorly-maintained oil filter. A secondary but contributory cause was determined to be a main-engine automation system that produced warnings and alarms that were not consistently related to the ship's Master. The National Transportation Safety Board published its final report on January 13, 1998, which concurred with the Coast Guard's determinations and appears to charge the ship's operating company with the responsibility for the casualty.
The incident resulted in no deaths, but 66 people were injured. Physical damage to the Bright Field was calculated at $1,857,952. Damage to the Riverwalk, including the pier, condominium properties, shops and hotel, totaled an estimated $15 million.
The Bright Field was repaired immediately following the incident, and in 2000 was reportedly seen again in the New Orleans harbor bearing the name Bright Star. In 2007, the vessel was renamed Bright City, operating under the Liberian flag, and carried a Chinese crew. As of May 2010, it's been renamed Yong Xu Hai, under the Chinese flag. Maritime Records show the ship has been decommissioned and scrapped.
The spot where the Bright Field ran into the Riverwalk is marked on site with a plaque.

I got cassaid at the River Walk bar a couple weeks before that happened. I was born in 75 as a little boy I remember having to walk through the old warehouse and wooden dock in the late 70s to get on the Natchez

Here is more to the story: I was there that day on the dock working as a longshoreman. We were servicing and loading a huge Cruise vessel for departure. People were actually on the gangway boarding the Cruise ship when the Brightfield began heading it's way. The Brightfield was emitting a distress signal as it moved toward the Cruise Ship and the Riverwalk. The harbor police did an amazing job alerting everyone as to what was happening. Thankfully, the Brightfield narrowly missed the cruise ship which would have been an absolute disaster had the two ships collided.

I worked right there for a while on the paddlewheeler "Creole Queen" during the 1980 Worlds Fair, it was quite an adventure...

This happened about 10 minutes after I finished Christmas shopping at the Riverwalk. I was driving on I-10 W when the news came on the radio.

I’ve lived in La for 20 yrs and was a boat capt offshore for most of that time. I’m not not from here and it’s hard to find some of the “little histories” you present here. Very cool.

In the 1960's my grandparents were visiting form Oregon. As a family we took a cruise on the SS President paddlewheeler. We were hit in the river by an empty freighter that was riding high. Immdeiately after the collision there were lifepreservers all in the river. My grandmother was knocked down and broke her ribs. I hung onto a stair rail and was knocked around. I remember it made a 2 paragrafh article on the third page of the Times Picayune.

Sounds like y'all were fortunate, it could have been a lost worse...The river can very treacherous, I worked right there for a while as a captain on the paddlewheeler "Creole Queen", and saw my share of close calls. I remember the "President" well.

Shout out to the tugboat captains who raced to the Bright Field right after the collision to keep her up against the Riverwalk so it wouldn't collapse into the river. They saved a lot of people.

My shop was destroyed in that accident. I watched the mob of shoppers panicking as they ran down the hallway to escape. People were getting trampled. It was crazy to see it.
