Raceland native here. I was so confused as you spoke about Bowie. I was over here thinking, I’ve never heard of this place! Great history lesson. Subscribing.
Thank you! I hope you enjoy the rest of the content!
You should look up my great-great-grqndfather, known as James Buchanan "Dad" Hill (inventor who drained the literal swamps). His son is what the boat launch down Hwy 652 is named after "Butch" Hill. Good job on shedding light on our state! 💖
I will definitely do that! Thank you for the compliment!
We used to go to the spillway in Raceland and ride 3 wheelers in the late 80's it was a blast. I haven't been there since.
That sounds like a wonderful memory.
My ex fiance and I remodeled his grandparents' home right there on Hwy 1 by the state farm/farm bureau, 2005 to 2008. it was the best life experience I've ever had. We'd boat the canals all the way to Fourchon and Grand Isle on a regular basis. I'd go hand crabbing and give em all to Mrs Alevia that worked as a door greeter when they first opened up the Walmart. I worked at Rouses! I'm only a few hrs away now but I miss it!
Wow that’s incredible! Such a great area.
St. Hilary was originally located on Georgia Plantation in Mathews. Some would argue that the hospital and that area is Mathews. 😀
Oh yea! What also blew my mind is that there were multiple Georgia Plantations (one more up the bayou). The whole area is fascinating.
Raceland: neither up nor down the bayou. Crazy to think it was such a hoppin' town before the new US 90 bypass opened. A lady from Vacherie told me that she and her friends would drive out to Raceland for fun and dancing (this was probably in the 1940s).
That is crazy to think!
I am a Raceland native. My family lives on a plantation now known as SmithTown with Third Zion church and my family cemetery. My dad retired from that sugar mill.
That’s so interesting! I’d love to come by and see the cemetery and sugar mill if it’s still around.
Thank you for this video on my birthplace
Hope you enjoyed it!
Great video. Thank you.
Thank you!
Good stuff man, I actually enjoyed learning about my old hometown
Glad you enjoyed it!
I remember a school with a mosaic of George Washington Carver in Raceland.
Love it!
Good stuff on my hometown of Raceland .. I’m all the way in Atlanta ga telling all my friends about your channel 💯
Much appreciated my friend! Thank you!
I enjoy your videos! Keep up the great work!
Thank you my friend. Much appreciated.
Thanks, Kyle. Another great history lesson. I would say that the Race family is likely where the name comes from, as well.
That’s the most likely origin but many locals have heard about the racetrack growing up.
OMG IM THE KID IN THE IMAGE! ME AND MY SISTER
Very cool!
My grandma and grandpa lived there till they died
It’s a great place to be!
I grew up in Raceland. The pink school wasn’t pink when I went there. Seems like it was the year after or so when I was at the junior high when they painted it, if I remember correctly.
It’s still a staple to Raceland! Really cool that you’re from the area.
Get this man a tv show already.
I wish haha
best videos ever !!
Thank you my friend!
If you were moving to Louisiana and loved the Cajun culture, Spanish moss trees and historic homes, which area would you look at?
Anywhere on Bayou Lafourche
@Louisiana Dread thank you for your response. We fell in love with the landscape and old homes when we visited and seriously considering a big move soon.
@@Wisteria_LaneThibodaux is a nice little college town and right on the bayou. There are lots of great places to experience the cuisine. Not to discount my bayou neighbors in Lafourche Parish, but just down the road from Thibodaux is Houma. It's a little larger population - wise and home to the annual Bayou Beer Fest where craft brewers compete, as well as the Rougarou Fest, The Maw-Maw and PawPaw walker pub crawl, and many other events including live music performances.
All of the Deep South 😊
Never heard nothing about a genocide of Cajuns. Deportation or expulsion sure, but not genocide for Heaven sake, somebody is just a touch over dramatic. I’ll nominate ya for the Oscars next year.
You need to learn more about it then. Mass killings, starvation, separation of family and culture. I’ll definitely win the Oscar if you nominate me though, thanks.
