Hi Michael! ps...you can also remove the string by simply holding a flathead screwdriver (or a Quarter even) and simultaneously loosen the tuning machine with a manual or auto winder and it will lower the locking post inside.🤘🏼
I used to own a Japanese fender strat with that style of tuners and even though it took me a while to figure out how to use those tuners properly, it ended up being a lot easier than I thought. At first, I used a screwdriver as I found the tuner’s design to be indicative of it but then I realised that if you simply keep on de-tuning, the tuner eventually unlocks. Similarly, when you’re installing new strings, all you have to do is pull the end of the string with one hand and turn the tuning peg with the other until the string locks in place. Dead easy and no need for a screwdriver. I’ll make a video doing it if I ever get another guitar with tuners like these.
those tuners would be the first thing i'd change. the ones where you pop the (trimmed) string down the centre, fold horizontal and then wind. they're the best. imho
Dude I thought same thing. I hate new stuff. But these look like original but work sooooo good. I’m sold on em but would not buy em to change out the old style if you get me. I love em but I also like the old way too. But this is very easy and fast.
Glad I found this, Michael. I thought it was just me not working out the simple process of changing a string. I Love my Vintage S so much that it has become my main guitar, but I can't go through that process to change a string mid set at a gig if I don't have a backup guitar. I feel a change of tuners coming on.
It's funny reading these comments of people not getting these tuning machines. I've used a set on my tele for over 10 years. I think they're great. While the stock tuning machines on my tele worked great, there was a noticeable improvement in tuning stability with the Gotohs over the stock Kluson tuning machines. They're not hard to restring after you figure out how they work. That said, it was a bit of a head scratcher during the first restring. If I'm rushing and have a bench with my tools, I can restring the guitar in about 3 minutes. I actually use a penny to loosen the locking mechanism simply because if the screwdriver head isn't thick enough it can potentially mark up the slot on the locking cap for the string post. What some of the other commenters aren't considering is that these Gotohs are way easier to install into a Fender style guitar than the Schaller style locking tuning machines with the locking wheel on the back. These don't require you to drill larger holds for the tuning machine's post to fit through the headstock like the Schallers do. And the Gotohs weigh much less than the Schallers. Friedman knew what he was doing when he put these on this guitar. Dig the shell pink, Michael. Rad 60's strat vibes.
jamarwright Gotoh make vintage style replacement tuners with a locking wheel which is much more convenient. Also the fact that it’s easier to install these gotohs on an already drilled guitar doesn’t change the fact that Friedman has the choice to drill whatever from the factory and plus on the calis they’re already drilling for hipshot locking tuners with wheels. The only real benefits that I can see are that they look vintage and may weigh slightly less than tuners with wheels.
@Vinny The Lens I felt obligated to speak up after reading the general disdain for these tuning machines. They work great. No need to stress about them being on your incoming guitar.
You should also mention that you need to pull the string gently tight as you tighten to lock. Then you need to use the screwdriver to tighten the pin down a bit more than just the string tension or it goes flat every time you bend string until you get to a certain point. I find these tuners a complete PITA but when you get them stretched and locked they work but the newer traditional looking version is far better for string changes particularly on a gig. Life is so much easier with these: reverb.com/item/7936456-gotoh-sd91-mgt-05m-magnum-lock-trad-vintage-locking-tuners-for-strat-tele-nickel But the regular SD91 stay in tune almost as well.
Seriously I probably have 20 views here cause every time I forget just that one little tiny step.... yep cut the string with you loosen the string before you lefty loose the locking portion... gets me every time.
Good to know - I thought those Fender vintage locking tuners were weird. You have a doppleganger from the original Teen Wolf movie, btw - I saw the teaser on Netflix and thought, "Michael?"
Way too much hassle. All that trouble just to look like vintage tuners that I never liked the looks of to start with. So far my favorite locking tuners are the new PRS tuners. Pull it tight, snug it down, tune it up, clip it off. They look good and work even better.
So what is the alleged advantage? The only advantage I’ve ever noticed with locking tuners is speed in string changing. I’ve never found them more stable for tuning and these aren’t even staggered to avoid needed a string tree.
I had the very same issue with my Friedman Vintage T’s here in the UK. I even messaged Dave F as I hadn’t a clue. But they’re great tuners though, as are his guitars 👍🎸
Michael, making videos about guitar tuners in 2019...you have too much time. May I propose you get yourself an iridium and post a video? You can run it A/B with a a year amp since you have a monitor room? Just kidding about the tuners. As you also mentioned, these tuners are designed so that you can open them with a pick such a jazz III but i think a coin can also work.
This is ridicilous. Good to know what tuners to avoid. I mean, its not that there is no alternative on how to do locking tuners... mine work like a charm and changing strings is as easy as it gets. Maybe Dave Friedman shose them because of their looks. And they are locking tuners. But, really?
These are on the new fender Lincoln Brewster strat. Easily the worst tuners ever designed and absolute trash. Shocked that Friedman is using these on $3000 guitars.
So, it is funny... All my guitars have simple tuners, they not lock & i change my strings for 5 minutes, only by my hands. And I never had problem with tuning.
I have these. Without a doubt, they are one of the dumbest, most poorly designed tuning machines ever made. What are you going to do if you break a string on stage? Have a roadie wheel out a table so you can restring it with a screwdriver?!? So frickin dumb. And they don’t even feel that good. Just horrible

That is the correct way yep ;) inverse of how he installed them. The tuners are terrible either way though. Too bad, rest of the guitar is stellar.

The tuners you're talking about aren't locking tuners. They are the reason the tuners in this video exist.
Dude I thought same thing. I hate new stuff. But these look like original but work sooooo good. I’m sold on em but would not buy em to change out the old style if you get me. I love em but I also like the old way too. But this is very easy and fast.
Thanks I just spent 20 minutes trying to figure this out on my Friedman vintage t

I love GOTOH tuners. Not sure about lock ones, but the GOTOH tuners are the business.
Super helpful! Couldn't find a source anywhere else. Thanks so much!
Regular locking tuners with a screw is five times faster and you don´t need any tools :-)
Yes but don’t look original
Never had a guitar with those tuners... so I learned something here. Thx!
I had a set of those on a used Knaggs I had got and swapped them out immediately for these Gotoh SD91-MGT's
Yup! It took me a minute to figure this out with mine. Was way easier after the first time.
Just got a vintage T. Thanks!

@@JoeHeisler To each his own I suppose.

Suhr locking tuners RULE!!! \m/ just sayin.. ;)
A really useful video, thanks Michael.
Invaluable - thanks for sharing!
Thanks mike i have the green vintage s i also broke a string and it sucked tryn to figure it out.
Thanks for making this.
What about a video on set up Michael? Especially neck relief 👍
Wow those are awesome!
This hurts me!!!!!

Sounds like "Imminence Front" by The Who playing in the background
ruclips.net/video/rzPkWQHtlXI/видео.html yep
Is this for real ? what is the benefit of having those tuners ?

I love the tuners on my PRS, and the Friedman Cali. They're really easy to use.
Yeah no thanks. Those tuners would be gone right quick. Too much of a PITA.
I had the very same issue with my Friedman Vintage T’s here in the UK. I even messaged Dave F as I hadn’t a clue. But they’re great tuners though, as are his guitars 👍🎸
So impractical tuners. I have similar from Gotoh. You have no chance to do it quickly by hands only. You need extra tools.

Please!!! Do not follow this man's method of doing this. Look at the video by CASSIDY MUSIC!!!

Should be wearing safety glasses. Who cares what they look like 🤪
What an absolute bollocks that is. Seeing this video has seriously put me off buying one of these.

Hell no!
😆 that is not how you restring with vintage tuners
Looking vintage ain't worth that hassle. Can't believe that Dave would use such a crappy design.
I have these. Without a doubt, they are one of the dumbest, most poorly designed tuning machines ever made. What are you going to do if you break a string on stage? Have a roadie wheel out a table so you can restring it with a screwdriver?!?

Where is the outrage at Friedman ripping off the strat? With the headstock it looks more like a ripoff than the SS.
