I use 10 to 52 Ernie Ball strings on everything from 24" to 25.5". I also use them with a wound G on my short scale acoustic. They're so good for just about anything you throw at them!

I have a new Fender Eric Clapton “Blackie” Strat on order. Putting the standard Fender locking tuners was going to require some surgery because it comes with vintage tuners. I found out today from a Luthier I trust, that the Gotoh vintage style locking tuners were the solution. Your video just demonstrated how nicely they fit! Great Video, been desperately searching for Vintage Fender Style Tuners that are locking. I also use the Planet waves ones on a absurdly modded Schecter, they are brilliant. If they Had Made alternatives to the grovers I would have Chosen them, so Clean. *Edit: If Hipshot only sold their UMP (Universal mounting Plate) sepeartely... IT would be a good send.
I would love to put these on my Squier tele - I never grew to like the Ping style split tuners, but did not want to replace them with modern style machines, I will check those specs out. Thank you (from England) for a very helpful video!
Oooh just what I'm after; I have a Baja tele with those "put-in-from-the-top" tuners and I hate them! You need 3 hands to restring them sometimes, especially the treble strings... Seriously considering getting a set of these, thanks for the vid :)
hey man. nice tuners. i have these in gold. i LOVE gotoh. the 2 sets of bushings sized differently are conversion bushings. the larger in diameter are ones for if you wanted to install these on a guitar that has larger holes like the sperzel ones.
Gotoh really are great. But I've really noticed recently on my 2014 Gibson, where I also installed Gotoh locking tuners, that tuning stability has only improved a bit BECAUSE of the NUT! The nut is also a key element and I'm slowly replacing all of the cheaper, plastic ones with Tusq nuts which are really sweet. Great lubrication *giggity*

These Gotoh tuners are built for inline tuners that are fixed with a screw between each tuner. In theory, any tuner will fit any headstock but you may have to do modifications. But as mentioned, if your existing tuners look like the ones in the picture, then you're all set - no problem whatsoever ;-) Don't forget - there are different versions of Squiers
I love the vintage tuners for the simple fact they look abit smarter cos the string is inside it and you don’t catch the strings or your finger on the ends of clothing.
okay so I have a squire 70s hss black strat and I was wondering if I changed tuners with out removing the bushing would it still work or do I need to have the right mesuements??
I can't find this style with the locking wheel in the back. Now you have to use a screwdriver on the top of the peg while you turn the head. I suppose it preserves the look but it's inconvenient at a live show. Thomann wants 115.00 plus shipping. I found a NOS set on Reverb for 64.00 all in.

These Gotoh tuners are built for inline tuners that are fixed with a screw between each tuner. In theory, any tuner will fit any headstock but you may have to do modifications. But as mentioned, if your existing tuners look like the ones in the picture, then you're all set - no problem whatsoever ;-)

Those bushings are 8.8mm and 9.2mm. Most vintage style uses 8.8mm bushings but some more recent fenders use ping tuners which have 9.2mm bushings. The only manufacturer that I’ve seen that makes those bushings is Gotoh.

When you pull the thing thru with a locking tuner pull the string up bend it up then lock it in place…however it make it easy saying the string if your doing mod on you guitar …you can sae a heap on string s i dont know how much ‘tuing stability ‘you will actually get but hey its a gas….jumping jack !lol😂take care mate love on you bro
I had vintage tuners on my Clapton Strat and they were perfectly stable. The great advantage of vintage tuners over other types is you don't have to tie the string to the pole -- you just pop it in and you go. So if you do it right, and that's a no-brainer, you just don't need a locking set. I replaced the Grovers on my Gibsons with Sperzel locking tuners, as well as tbe original Fender pegs on my Strat. For those guitars it was quite an improvement, as I don't have to go through the hassle of tying that knot.
Have you tried installing these on a newer style Strat? My American pro has Fender locking tuners on it already but I don’t like how modern they look. I’m interested in getting a set of these to maintain tuning stability but give it a more vintage look.
I see what you mean. I think all tuners in fender classic electrics should have rounded pegs. They match the design of the guitar, period. May be you can buy just the vintage looking pegs...

8s would feel like razor blades to me lol. The smallest I'll go on a strat is 9.5, which I find to be a perfect balance of bendability and strong tone. But even still, they can feel weird at times. I have 11s or 12s on everything else I own so going to the strat is weird sometimes if I haven't played it in a while. But 11s on a strat can be painstaking.
I need to do this to my tele. I hate the vintage style tuners as I have issue with the high E string popping out. I have lockers on two other guitars, a strat ultra and a Gretsch. So much easier

I couldn't agree with you more. If it's an actual real strat from the 50s or 60s, then I wouldn't touch a thing. But newer guitars should have locking tuners. Ease and stability!

They are really good. I've put them on another strat because I like them so much. They're smooth and great for tuning stability. They certainly have my approval.
I don't claim they are the best, but I like the old style tuners. For me it's a nostalgia thing. But you may have converted me. Close enough to old school but more precise.
Thanks for the review. I just got these exact tuners and some Graph Tech saddles installed on my custom shop strat and my tuning stability is pretty bad. Is there a break-in period for these tuners ? Also, should I maybe use nut sauce on the pegs ? I also have this weird almost buzzing sound when you hit the low E open. The intonation seems to be fine ? Ideas ? Fwiw, I never had any issues with tuning stability with my stock vintage tuners.
I've never experienced a 'break in' period with Gotoh locking tuners. It could be several things. You didn't have tuning or fret buzz problems before the tuner and saddle change correct? Maybe you need to raise the saddle on the low e-string a bit. Double check the intonation. One thing I always do is blocking off the tremelo because I never use it. That helps. But if you do use the tremelo check your neck relief and perform a full setup. With new tuners AND new saddles the guitar might just need a good overall look over and setup again. Hope this helps in any way.
Never had any tuning or fret buzz issues until the tuners and saddles. I could abuse the tremolo and it would still stay in tune. But it’s going out of tune playing normally. The EADG strings go flat. I’m also tuned to eb with 10-46s. Could it be maybe the fact that I have locking tuners now, it doesn’t have enough tension ? Where before I had several wraps and more tension therefore giving me better tuning stability ? Also, it should be noted that nothing else was touched on the guitar other than the saddles for action and intonation and of course the tuners themselves.
They are holding up very well. And yes, after a bit of break-in time they are easier to turn and it seems also more stable. They definitely get my seal of approval.
@@BasementGAS Update, got the tuners installed and working great on my tele. I did have to replace the bushings as the diameter on the stock ones was a little too small. Found an easy trick that made it a breeze though using a bolt, washer and nut to push the new bushings in. The only issue I see is that the A string sits a little high off the nut on the tuner side which isn't ideal. I'm thinking about switching it with one of the shorter tuner posts, probably the one on the G string. What do you think?
@@niqueth That may work but then wouldn't you have the same problem with the G string? How about filing down the nut very very slightly with some high grit sandpaper? That would probably be the easiest and fastest solution.
Basement GAS No the G string has a string tree so it doesn’t have that problem. I went ahead and switched it out and it’s definitely better. They are really nice tuners and look great. Glad I got to see your video before I bought them!

your new G string tuner is slightly lower in height than your B string tuner. Looks like they are staggered heights too. you should maybe swab the two over. Good video though.
I used to live in Garmisch. I was just searching for a review on these tuners as ALL mine on my cort acoustic packed up one by one within about 2 weeks of each other????? designed to fail I wonder
I don't understand why you would buy a vintage re-issue Strat and then proceed to remove one of the very things that makes it vintage-like. Will you be upgrading the trem to a two-point soon? For what its worth I have a few AVRI Fenders with vintage tuners (Strat, Tele, Jazzmaster and Jaguar) and have no tuning stability problems at all - In fact my 52 AVRI Tele is probably the most stable of all my guitars. In fact I'm presently in the process of converting a modern Mexi Strat to vintage tuners and a six screw vintage trem ... :)
I had to stop buying ernie ball strings as I've finally decided they make them to break after 5 or 6 large drops of tension over a week or so. I like how gibson brite wire 5 pack gives you 2 extra B and E string. I think it's 26$
I don't get why people always say that locking tuners are such a huge time saver....unless your job is changing strings all day, who cares if it takes an extra minute??!! are we this lazy these days that we will spend upwards of 100 to upgrade perfectly good tuners so we can save a few minutes? really? Change the strings every month or so and need to save time? crazy.
Stick to the guitar you started with? What video were you watching? It's the same guitar the whole way through. I added some examples at the end to show the benefit of locking tuners. And I mentioned several times how they perform. Try actually watching the full video and not just skipping through it.
"tuner heads" (and much later the likewise "wrong" Radio Heads) as "Rundfunkradioempfangsgeräts-Kopf": "Poof!" (And _anything_ about guitsrs tied into the Jehova-sect and/or any other madness.
With locking tuners?? I've never seen or done that. And I've never had any problems with tuning stability. Even on my Les Paul tuning down to A doesn't cause any problems. So just pulling through and tightening works absolutely fine. That's actually the whole point of locking tuners, so that you don't have winds around the peg which causes the string to to shift with tuning and bending. Or are you talking about normal tuners?

With staggered tunners you should be able to remove the string trees, that will help with the tuning, less friction.

SRV used BIG strings for playing in E flat. He used a set of 13-56 gauge strings

Whats the weight difference between the vintage tuner vs the locking gotoh?
They're obviously a bit heavier but nothing noticable. You won't notice a big headstock heavy change - so it won't make the neck heavier.
What about string tree ? Is it still needed?

I have not. But I know for a fact that the screw holes are different. So you would sadly have to modify the headstock a bit ie. drill new holes

The only issue I see is that the A string sits a little high off the nut on the tuner side which isn't ideal. I'm thinking about switching it with one of the shorter tuner posts, probably the one on the G string. What do you think?
@@niqueth That may work but then wouldn't you have the same problem with the G string? How about filing down the nut very very slightly with some high grit sandpaper? That would probably be the easiest and fastest solution.
Basement GAS No the G string has a string tree so it doesn’t have that problem. I went ahead and switched it out and it’s definitely better. They are really nice tuners and look great. Glad I got to see your video before I bought them!

your new G string tuner is slightly lower in height than your B string tuner. Looks like they are staggered heights too. you should maybe swab the two over. Good video though.

I actually prefer higher end kluson lockers - tried both. Obviously Schallers are great to - Grovers and Sprezels are overrated.
I don't understand why you would buy a vintage re-issue Strat and then proceed to remove one of the very things that makes it vintage-like. Will you be upgrading the trem to a two-point soon? For what its worth I have a few AVRI Fenders with vintage tuners (Strat, Tele, Jazzmaster and Jaguar) and have no tuning stability problems at all - In fact my 52 AVRI Tele is probably the most stable of all my guitars. In fact I'm presently in the process of converting a modern Mexi Strat to vintage tuners and a six screw vintage trem ... :)
Each to their own. Everyone has preferences but good to know that you prefer the vintage tuners. I'm just a locking guy 😉
Cables is probably more accurate than string even though you acted like you'd made a mistake

I had to stop buying ernie ball strings as I've finally decided they make them to break after 5 or 6 large drops of tension over a week or so. I like how gibson brite wire 5 pack gives you 2 extra B and E string. I think it's 26$

I don't get why people always say that locking tuners are such a huge time saver....unless your job is changing strings all day, who cares if it takes an extra minute??!! are we this lazy these days that we will spend upwards of 100 to upgrade perfectly good tuners so we can save a few minutes? really? Change the strings every month or so and need to save time? crazy.

Stick to the guitar you started with? What video were you watching? It's the same guitar the whole way through. I added some examples at the end to show the benefit of locking tuners. And I mentioned several times how they perform. Try actually watching the full video and not just skipping through it.

Dude, you should really learn how to put strings on properly ... Low E string should get 1 or 2 turns around the peg
With locking tuners?? I've never seen or done that. And I've never had any problems with tuning stability. Even on my Les Paul tuning down to A doesn't cause any problems. So just pulling through and tightening works absolutely fine. That's actually the whole point of locking tuners, so that you don't have winds around the peg which causes the string to to shift with tuning and bending. Or are you talking about normal tuners?
