Having restrung a few guitars yesterday, this was relevant. Vintage tuners were so much easier to do! For B string I wrap down round the E post and then back the B post; E string I measure round the post and up to the G post. Gotta keep that gap of 2 pegs :)
I LOVE that classic video of BB King replacing a broken string ON STAGE during a PERFORMANCE, and just KEEPS PLAYING THE SONG! I think he was only able to do it because Lucille had old style tuners, and it would have been nearly impossible to manage to do the same thing with more modern tuners??
I don’t usually comment on RUclips, but this has really helped me. I bought a tele with vintage tuners last year and I’ve really hated them as I thought you had to wrap the string round the post first… cue lots of tantrums. This has clarified the process, thank you!
I love these tuners. I work on my own guitars and ALSO find them to be great if you need to do some work “under the hood” because you don’t need to kill the strings you have on the guitar. Just ease the tension and pop the string out from the top. The shape of the end of the string doesn’t change. Then once you’re done, carefully (so you don’t cross the windings) set the string back into the tuner and relighted to pitch.
I'm with you. I like these vintage tuners too. Good idea to make a video on a fundamental bit of knowledge that everyone should know. Gotta learn the basics.
I just replaced the PoS slotted tuners with Fender locking tuners with a hole in the middle of the post. Now I can set a luthier's knot on the strings, and the locks help prevent slippage on the strings, even with tremolo use. Now, my guitar doesn't go out of tune. Best upgrade ever.
It sure helped me after watching your video. The other nice thing about these tuners is, you can take the strings off and put them back on with little trouble. Like if you have to work on your guitar and get the strings out of the way.
I've just done my quickest ever string change with the vintage tuners on my Strat thanks to this brilliant video Shane. I always struggled so much before, especially with the high E popping out of the tuner but not with your method of pulling and holding the strings down. Simply brilliant and now I will be changing my strings more often

Vintage tuners are the absolute best. They never slip. For the B & E string, I take and fold over the end that goes into the tuner back onto itself about the distance of the depth of that tuner. That gives just a little more bite in the hole for when you start winding.
Great idea of reversing the head so it renders the view from the right-hander's perspective (Even though I would have still followed it from the Left-Hander's view). I may have started playing in 1962, which it doesn't take a Rocket Scientist to come to the conclusion I'm Retired and have tons of time. I said that to say this...I use an electric screwdriver with one of the winders (like offered by Music Nomad, and D'Addario, not trying to show preference, I just don't recall any more right now...Hey...I'm allowed...I'm an Old F@rt, remember!?!?!?) that you fit in a variable speed electric screwdriver or variable speed drill or screwdrivers like the Snap-On Ratcheting Screwdrivers and just your personal preference of wire cutters. I've tried the stringwinders like Shane is using. I just find the method I just described not only more convenient, but quicker for me. Great Video!!
On the last 2 strings, I pinch the string and slide it back 2 pegs, then pinch it again when you're even with the tuner. Although I like a little extra length on the G for and extra wind or two down the peg. Helps me with my tuning stability.

I'm a beginner and I just changed my tele strings after snapping the B - although mine went in the sides, rather than down the machine heads?.. anyway apart from fighting with the wire cutters I did it! Proud of myself I used ernie ball super slinky 9s so I hope they'll be ok. I love the twangy country pickin' & Waylon Jennings stuff.

All you need to do for the last two tuners is pinch the string at the tuner in question, then move it back two tuners and cut where the string meets the tuner you are attaching it to, bingo there is your length measurement.
You know what video I've never seen; how feed your strings through the back of a Squier strat. The bridge block is magnetic, which makes it difficult to push through.
@@caseyspaos448 Tremolo bridge blocks aren't magnetically charged. In fact, zinc and brass blocks cannot hold a magnetic charge. If you've found that strings sometimes get stuck while feeding them through a trem block, it's probably because the tip of the string is jamming against a protrusion of material in the cavity.

I restring exactly the same way - it's pure logic (I didn't get shown but maybe Brian S said to pre cut them) and yes I've always loved the vintage tuners. It also gave me the confidence to pre cut my strings when restringing all my other guitars - nylon and bass excepted.

I've never had vintage style tuners on any of my guitars until I recently pieced a Hendrix strat together and thought why not. Although trying to string them up in a conventional way caused all sorts of problems and frustration. After doing some research on YT, as you said Shane very easy to do string changes! You just have to get that initial kink in the string otherwise they can slip (especially on the unwound strings). Thanks for sharing mate.
Good video, just reviewed it as I was looking for a vid to share with someone before they tracked. As a side note, on the high E & B strings, no need to fret on the slack length. (Pun accidental, but left because, well, it’s funny…all you need to do is, pull taught, index it, pull BACK two tuner lengths, and cut at the destination tuner. That gives you your two tuner length, for anyone who is super OCD about this stuff. FWIW, I like a little more length on my uppers, to account for the usually placed string tree on Fenders. Nice vid.

usually i tend to leave more string especially on the G in case there only one string tree, that's because more string around the peg helps to keep the string lower and it's a bit like having an invisible string tree. this is particularly helpful for avoiding possible string buzz at the nut, especially if it's not perfectly cut
Handy snip tip, and love the mirror universe! There's vintage tuners stock on my Lead II, I'm very happy to have a Fender guitar back with these tuners since my old Tele long ago. Also a fan of those D'Addario Nickel Wound.
Great video, horrible tuners! Hahaha. I hate to be a negative Nancy here but oh my God, , just bought a Fender Vintera Telecaster, first time changing the strings , the first 3 strings are thicker so they popped out a little but I got them to stay in and hold properly. The G string wouldn't stay in, I would wind it, get tension on it, string it around the peg 3 times and it would pop out over and over and over, same with the B and high E strings. Finally got the G string in, only way I could get it to hold somehow was by turning the tuning peg the opposite direction. What a nightmare, changing strings for over an hour and only have 4 strings on.

I do my best string changes with my guitars with vintage tuners! I only have one Strat that has the more modern style tuners and I do a horrible job when I change strings.😂😂😂

I'm a lefty and a telecaster nut and my newer tele came with the fender di cast tuners so I removed and replaced with split shaft tuners. I actually prefer them to locking tuners to be honest as they are so simple to use and the best thing is if you need to take off a string for some reason they hold the shape of the peg and pop back in.

I always hated changing strings on my guitars, until I got a couple Classic Vibe guitars with these style tuners. SO much faster and easier than the stupid string-through tuners on all my other guitars! (And don't get me started on the damn old Jackson tremolo that requires cutting the balls off the strings! Nightmare licensed Floyd, if you ask me!) Instead of guesstimating the last two strings, you could just run the string down, pinch it at the tuning peg, then move it down a peg and measure up two pegs for the cut. So for the high E, just run the string, pinch it, move it to the G string's peg, then cut it at the high E tuner. Works for me, anyhow. Sure, I could guesstimate, but I'm a bit anal and/or have undiagnosed OCPD.
Most people these days just call these 'vintage tuners' but that can confuse some people ('So you mean old tuners?'). Fender originally called them Saf-T Post tuners and they were modelled on Kluson's SAFETI String tuners.

I'm restoring a 2007 MIM Strat and I just put vintage split post tuners in it. I had to get 10mm to 6mm adapters, but they look great now.
My favourite tuner. I cut two and a half lengths for the first two wound strings then two lengths for all others.

I have 2 tele's and a strat. all 3 have these. one of the tele's also has the staggered height, and i love those even more.
The Staggered ones are good. But you can also wind the string all the way to the bottom and get the same effect on a regular tuner.

I have a tip: press a penny down on the string slot and twist. It works if your having trouble with the string popping out.

Have you seen the Kluson Supreme tuners in your neck of the woods? They're vintage style, but have an 18:1 ratio, so they're a little more precise.

On the unwound string I do a passover at the slit to lock the string more.

Pro tip: put a cocktail stick in the hole after the string is in to hold it in place. Makes it even easier. Love these tuners

B&E i use a thin toothpick with restringing, preventing the strings slipping out. Vintage locking tuners are the best! 🎉

Best non-locking tuner. Not sure why Fender doesn’t use them on everything.
