      There's an episode of the original CSI where Peterson is investigating a murder using Ricin-D Nitrogen (the proper chemical name of the toxic component) and speculates that the perpetrator "cooked up" some in her kitchen before the crime. That was a nice bit of misdirection since applying heat to the molecule destroys it, which is why the pulp of the castor bean is steamed after the oil is extracted. I loved the smell of real Castrol brand castor oil in my 1972 Kawasaki 350 triple, which had a separate tank for the two-stroke oil automatically mixed into the fuel before combustion. I don't even think they sell that anymore.

  • @TheBioCosmos
    @TheBioCosmos 5 месяцев назад +121

    Just some corrections to the video:
    1. Obviously, ricin isn't the only toxic protein. Many venoms are protein-based too, so there are many toxic proteins we would want to avoid.
    2. Ricin is hydrophilic, not hydrophobic. If it's hydrophobic, it would be able to dissolve in oil.

    I wonder if we could use the B-Toxin as a drug delivery method to get medicine inside cells. Perhaps we could make it so a modified version of the A-Toxin is able to be disabled by healthy cells, but not cancerous ones. Also, perhaps we could find a human-specific enzyme and modify toxin A to bind to that enzyme and disable its toxicity, allowing the toxin complex to act as a universal antibiotic/fungicide allowing a cure for nearly all non-virulant infections.

      Now, excuse me while I get a cup of coffee, then have a smoke for a double whammy on my BP.
      Oh, the single greatest cause of failed back surgery? Smoking. It's a vasoconstrictor. Slows healing.
      My biggest health issue is BP related, but not to smoking. Hyperthyroidism and a few thyroid storms, which have done far more damage than my coffee and smokes ever could.
      I know the risks, I understand the pathophysiology, it's my choice. But, if it's any consolation, as much as I loathe my own secondhand smoke, I loathe exposing others to it even more.

      The Communists eventually copied the Fascists and both sides used it: although the Fascists gained the upper hand and controlled the country for a long time, after the war the Communists had some popularity in Italy. See the Don Camillo stories by Guareschi, set mostly in the Po Valley of postwar Italy. Both people who missed some aspects of the Fascist days, and the Communists, copying the tactic, would send a group of men to force an opponent to drink a big dose of castor oil, with unpleasant consequences.
      Fortunately, castor oil isn’t toxic. I don’t think I’ve consumed any unless it’s a minor ingredient in something popular.
