What can i speak you??? just thank you... God Bless you friend.. im Roberto from Brazil, and im learning to carve whith you... Congratulations for the amazing job... unbelievable... ahhh, and im learning speak english, and so, your way to speak is very clean and your vocabulary is rich... so im learnig two things...
That’s awesome !
You are very welcome Roberto! This was a wonderful encouragement! God Bless you!
Definitely #2 and #5 are the things I needed to hear, thank you for sharing that!
Glad to hear!
Thanks for the tips😁. It really encouraged me to hear the last one, I have that problem. I have gotten into that habit a little already, so it really helped to hear you give these tips.
Hey dude! Don’t want to be the sappy random guy on the internet, but I do feel like you reading this can also make you feel good! I have always wanted to be creative and I never knew where to start, finding you and Doug was like that light switch moment! It felt so great to follow along with your carving videos, but I always though that that’s all I would be able to do was follow along. SO, one day I decided to imitate your magazine cover ( on a much smaller scale ) from only using the photo as a reference no video.. and boyo that shit came out looking sweet, that was my freeing moment. I am now realizing all the following along with you was actually building skills within me I didn’t even know about! I am now sitting here and being able to put these images I have in my head to life through wood, and it’s f*^king awesome! I have just left my job and want to purse this passion of mine and continue growing my skills, and selling pieces !! Watching your video today and you talk about all the people saying don’t do it is so true, whether they say it directly or indirectly the opinion is there. I understand where they are coming from in a love way, but you are right, I want to be able to look at this moment in the future and say “ wow, I am glad I stuck to my gut and made it here”
ANYWAYS.. there is my rant, thanks for listening to my Ted talk.
Wishing you and anyone reading this truly all the best in life and their* passions.
SO glad to hear this! Thanks for sharing your story!!
Gorgeous work. Thank you for sharing
Great to know that pine is good to carve, I live in pine county down south in great state of Alabama!
Smart video. Thanks
3:26 School is death to creativity.
That was great advice, keep it coming very inspirational for future carvers.
Thanks Michael!
I like to make my own tools as much as I like using them. The tool making is an addiction itself
Thank you for the great advise . Been carving for a few years now and learning a lot from you Thank you .
You're welcome!
Sound advice. 👍👍
100 percent true me especially sharping
Thanks Alec I needed that, been tough expanding my horizons with life getting in the way. I am sure it is the same for everyone though, so at times you just have to dig in that back foot and take that mighty swing for the fences . Well helll just get it done!
True! No problem!
Just doing the work…inspiration will come because you do the work. Octavia Butler is my favorite science fiction author, and has this wonderful quote: “First forget inspiration. Habit is more dependable. Habit will sustain you whether you're inspired or not. Habit will help you finish and polish your stories.”
So good, thanks for sharing
nice
Dope! Your second point hit me, many times I'm like nah, I'm not feeling it... Will def. take ur advise and just get in it, good lookin out.
I only give the advice I need to hear!
True, but also wisdom comes with experience!! I wish that I knew what I know now, then when I was young(I am 65)
True that!
I guess you could say
The naysayers were trying to WHITTLE your resolve down to nothing?
(I'm sorry that joke was terrible. I appreciate finding this video since I want to get into carving and I'll definitely keep this is mind when I start)
i want to have wood curving skill and give this skill to my next generation
, Ethiopia
What is th best material to choose for the tools? I see so many different kinds of steel.
Love this video Alec, really useful information. I have done some minor carving over the years but have really immersed myself in it in the last year. Have bought some quality tools, but my problem is trying to find tools to buy. Seems like they are always out of stock, or I can't find the tools I want. Frustrating. Thank you for doing what you do.
Try the Beavercraft stuff, they're great. I am living in the Netherlands. And purchased it straight from Ukraine. Good stuff and holding an edge.
Thanks a bunch!! And I agree with Peter!
I see you, and Doug Linker, use OCC knives, but when searching for those I find this disclaimer:
"Please note: All OCC wood carving knives, wood carving tools, spoon gouges and other tools are now made in Beloit, WI. OCC Tools was sold to Kryshak Carving Tools in October of 2022. New tools come with the new KCT logo."
Do you still recommend those knives, under their new management?
Thank you so much for all the instruction and information you provide, I love your videos!
Add one more to that. Do not listen to your own criticism get many other people to check your work because you yourself can be your worst critic. Thanks Alec this really helped me
There you go! You're welcome Greg!
I know exactly what you mean, I point stuff out on my own work that are flaws and other people are looking at them like I can't even see what you're seeing right now.
Er is maar 1regel om een beeltenis te maken ,hak alleen weg wat niet bij de afbeelding hoort 😂
Is SCHAAF good gouges to start with... or should i stick with buying pfiel?
Swiss Woodcarver here. Pfeil chissels are absolutely brilliant. Highly recommend
Wow this is the best advice ever. I built church furniture for over ten years and we had a carver from Germany who was a master carver and I'm telling you there was absolutely nothing this guy could not carve with any tool. He was amazing. Love your videos man
That’s awesome Tim! Thanks for the kind words!! Those Germans have some incredible carvers.
Carvers can have nice stuff, because they can make nice stuff.
I like it
Hey family,
please everyone watch this. Replace "carving" with "your life". And the first item, sharpener, as the things that improve you, make you better even when you know it but don't like it.
I love you all.
Dad
What vitamins do you take???
Garden of life men’s multi
To all who think they might be interested in carving...DON'T BUY CHEAP ASSED TOOLS! It's OK if you can't afford the good tools right now...Pace yourself and buy the absolute best tools you can afford. If it is 1 tool at a time, so be it. It will work out better in the long run. Good tools will last a lifetime. don't let temptation guide your checkbook!
If you had all this difficulty, mabey marriage will hold you back
Lol, stop it Franz! 😂
I do not agree went you tell youths not to go to school, come on, going to school you find a wide rage of opportunities, additional to that, your expose to all kinds of knowledge, after school you can choose what ever the fuck you want.
I don't remember telling youths not to go to school! I often tell young folks that I'm glad I went to college and encourage them to go too!
@@AlecLaCasseArt ok, I lesson again you video and you are right you did not tell not to go to school specifically but it could be infer. Maybe I missed understood.
I have one to add. Don’t watch RUclips videos and expect to learn how to carve.
Join a club and sit with others better and less then you.
That’s a good one!
But I actually learned to carve by carving alongside of teachers on RUclips !
@AlecLaCasseArt Utube ?That's not really learning it's more like copying.
Sitting in a group with other's is far better. I started carving before the internet. Most of the stuff I do is holiday carvings. Santa's etc.
The biggest hurdle I've seen others struggling is sharpening their tools.
I've not carved in tree bark it looks too soft I'm used to walnut, cherry beech and basswoods nice.
@@augustwest8559 depends on the way you learn I guess! Sounds like you learn by carving with people in person! Also, you ought to copy folks when you start! That’s how you learn! Then you find your own style!
@@augustwest8559 and yes! I see the same problem with sharpening! Cottonwood bark is very soft, too soft for some! I like it! But then again, I like all the woods you mentioned too!
