Probably off topic, but I am impressed with the way that dog froze when you spoke it’s name. Especially when it wanted to check out the deer.
I concur animals are better behaved than some people lol more intelligent too 👍🇬🇧🐾🦊
Bordacollies are boss
It's a Border Collie, I wouldn't expect anything less.
Doug you’ve inspired me to go get the few tools mentioned in your video! I believe you will become the “Bob Ross of carving”.
He's TOTALLY the Bob Ross of carving. I've thought that too.
It's our job to make him into that
Doug is a national treasure. He should be knighted
That was the mist clear eyed explanation of the basic tool set up I've ever seen! Thanks Doug, you're a treasure and I'm blessed to have stumbled onto you all that time ago
People like you guys are the unsung heros of the pandemic.
My husband was inspired after watching you, so on our last trip he decided to carve me a bear! 💛 He ended up making me the best pair of chop sticks I've ever used😉! I ate every meal with them that weekend and keep them in my pack now! Lol
@@redskyz483 What? Carving a bear or chop sticks? Lol
@@redskyz483 it was his first attempt at carving, and when things didn't turn out quite as he planned, he created something else with what he had left of the wood. When life gives you lemons... Who needs a hand carved bear when I have a pair of chopsticks and an amazing hubby!
Robertine Buckley you’ll treasure those chopsticks forever! ❤️
Brilliant!
Thanks for your comment that made me smile😊💓🇺🇸
I've really come to love watching your videos. Any of them. You're a natural on camera, and I love the fact that it's not all super-rehearsed and "perfect." You're not just some guy showing his skills, you're like - I don't know, - everyone's friend, just trying to help us all get better. I appreciate that very much, and by the comments here I'm not alone in that. In a world that is going to heck in a handbasket, it's amazingly wonderful to find someone that's just down to earth, with no agenda, just sharing things he loves with other people. Thank you. Thank you very, very much.
Calls the dogs name, dog does a statue! I love it.
VERY good dog! He responded to one softly spoken command, as only a well trained and committed Family member would.
Привет! Я из России, как бы странно не звучало, но у нас мало блоггеров, которые занимаются резьбой по дереву. Если и есть такие люди, то это в основном геометрическая резьба, не фигурная. И это в стране лесов! Спасибо вам за ваши труды!
Thank you for such a clear explanation, Starting with casual knives, but now looking for something like one inch long blades. Good health to You and your family.
tres bon moment ....bravo la biche merci
Great Teacher! Thank you friend. Your skills are fantastic.
Doug is why I love my 2 blade barlow it's nostalgic and got me a pen blade for quill sharpener and larger blade in one package that folds and uk legal carry no way I'm carrying a,fixed blade could injure me in pocket and not classified as legal here in uk it must be 3inches must not lock or be fixed blades so a swiss army knife or my barlow are legal carry 👍🦊🐾🇮🇹🇺🇲
Thanks Doug. I'm late to the party but, 4 years later, this is easily one of the best introductions to the tools needed I've seen. Thanks again, subscribed )O(
Thanks for this Doug, sitting on a log in the woods in autumn, coffee in hand and a startled deer scares a squirrel up a tree in the middle of a carving tutorial priceless 😁😁 great advice as usual I need to spend more time 'doing' instead of 'thinking of doing' best wishes from the UK keep'em coming
👍👍
A practiced mind is the most valuable tool you can own.
Thanks Doug! Enjoyed your presentation.
Thanks, Doug. Never have I related to another human being more than when you mentioned waiting for your wife in the car while she's in Fabric-Land. 🤝👍😋
imusbcraz 😄
I'm overly pleased to say that I made a 75 minute (each way) trip west of Chicago today and bought a FlexCut 3 knife pack with a stick of compound, on sale for $41.29. I had been following along with your videos using nothing but regular chisels I sharpened razor sharp. I bought a CHEAP set of carving tools from Harbor Freight for like $10 and it came with a "V" tool and 2 gouges, along with a couple chisels and that angled chisel you just showed (that I forgot the name of). Granted, those cheap tools took some elbow grease to get sharp blades and I had to remove all the tools from the handles, drill deeper and even, and epoxied them back together properly. They work great now. I had been wondering what the best, minimal tools were and, fortunately, I now have the ones you recommended and then some. You've been my sole inspiration and I watch your videos regularly to learn and just watch.
What a nice person to share his “passion”. THANK YOU. I’m excited about learning basic carving!
I was gifted carving tools for Christmas from my granddad. I've never carved. It's a lovely gift, I'd love to put them to use.
Couldn't get a hold of any Helvie Knife like yours to ship to Norway! Ordered an 1 3/4'' knife from OCC Tools and a v-tool from Flexcut. Thank you for your videos, i recently discovered your channel and it's an absolute delight.
Cheers from Norway
As I grow older, I realize things that are represented as simple or even backward, like wood carving, are only represented that way by people ignorant of the depth of complexity involved. Mr. Linker is a pretty straightforward guy, but just discussing knives opens a whole world of perspectives and data. The world is SO much bigger and more amazing than we think, there's no reason to live anyone else's idea of a good life.
revolt against the modern world
that's why I love getting into a lot of rabbit holes in the internet for new hobbies. You can see how a simple thing as cutting wood has so much work behind. And with the internet everyone can see and share the knowledge
doug, youre awesome! thanks for everything!
Was looking forward to this, thanks Doug!
I started BlackSmith Hobbyist 4 years ago, and I now can make a knife better than intro level knife and most chisels and not selling my knives, but my BlackSmith Hobbyist products are for myself and love ones.
Nothing for sale but just letting people know hobby can help other hobbies now I can make handles fit better.
I wish companies would market over size handles on a line of knives to be trimmed to fit by the purchasers to trim to fit. That is going to be my next build.
Thanks 👍
I also carry my wood carving tools into the woods. I leave the mess outside.
Good work
This is great Doug! Thank you so much!
Thanks Doug, You have put my mind at ease,
Thanks Doug, looking forward to the carving series
Excellent! Excellent! Excellent! Thank you!
Thanks Doug
Looking forward to the rest of the series

Very informative. Thanks Doug! 👍😁
Thanks Doug, your a great teacher !! Your my favorite teacher when it comes to carving. Looking forward to this series.
Good Sunday Doug! Thank you for the explanation of the basic and different carving tools!👍
Thanks Doug. I ordered a Flexcut 1 1/4" knife, strop on a block and a bag of Basswood. Delivered tomorrow, can hardly wait.
I want to practice with the country folk, Santa and maybe some elves. If all goes well the are a few wood spirits to try. That birdhouse you made really caught my eye too.
Thank you for getting my butt out of the recliner.
Checking in 2 years later. Hope you are well. How did it go? Did you stick with the hobby?
Just fascinating. Loved it. Thnx
Hi Doug. I think you’ve started a really useful series of videos. I’m looking forward to seeing the rest of them. Many thanks and keep going man.
Another spot on video Doug, good to know we dont need a rack of tools to get busy carving. Well done good sir and looking forward to the next video.
Great video Doug! This series is going to be very beneficial to the carving community!
Out of all these videos in this series the sharpening one I'm looking forward to the most.
Thanks for doing what you do and inspiring me to carve.
Great job covering and simplifying the basics. Thank you Doug.
Thanks Doug for doing these beginner videos! Just what I need to get started carving!
I love your videos Doug, keep them coming I'm having such Joy learning to carve. And this video is just what I was after thanks 👍👍👍👍
I like simple. Thanks, Doug!
Really liking this new series. Thanks for sharing. Really.
Excited to watch and start carving my first project w your series
Very helpful video. Love the outdoor scenery.🍁🍁🍁
Keep 'em coming Doug!
Great opening vid Doug. Well explained and good guidance for those just starting out. looking forward to future vids. ATB.
Hello Doug, thanks for the great videos
This is going to be a great series, I love your idea of breaking this down into progressive steps. Carving beginners like myself will be able to review a shorter more detailed video of a specific area they may have trouble with. My nemesis is still carving faces. You make it look so simple but my eyes never come out like yours do and lately your noses have gone way above to an almost realist level.
Thanks Doug keep up the great work and don’t forget to have fun with it. 😊
Just started carving, just what I needed to know.
Thank you Doug!
Thank you Doug! I needed to hear this. MAKE THE TIME TO CARVE! Two thumbs up. And you inspired me to bring my carving stuff wherever I go.
Thank you Doug you are one hell of a teacher
Looking into getting into a new Hobby and found your playlists. You are absolutely wonderful in your explanations, guidance, and banter. Love the series I’ve watched so far and can’t wait to get into it. Thanks for all you do!
Enjoying these videos Doug. Great for beginners and good refresher for those who have a bit of experience. Thanks
Great series, just getting into this myself.
Well Done Doug Thanks
Great Video - I started making walking sticks after the first lockdown and from there started whittling and wood carving - I just started with a Benchmade folder, sandpaper, and wood stain.
Eventually I got more tools, but happy with what I have and every day I do a little bit of work, even if it's 5 or ten minutes, I get projects done. Thanks for more inspiration.
This series is a great idea. Looking forward to the tool sharpening. Just getting started in carving. Lucky to have spotted your site. Thanks
Thanks for getting me into this hobby. It’s kept me sane during lockdown here in England. I really enjoy not so good but trying. All the best mate
Why are you locked down, are you on house arrest?
Thank you for this, so helpful! Love your shelf of 'friends' behind you! Beautiful work
Who the hell disliked?!! What’s wrong with people
I've been carving for nearly 25 years, and i just love watching this brother! Even deer come close to learn something! Great Job with the new shop!
Im so glad you are doing this series,I really want to get started after watching you and now I will know what to buy,I have a couple of pieces of wood put by already:)
Doug you are an inspiration. I’ve been watching you for quite a while and I’ve recently started teaching carving on RUclips as well. Keep up the good work.
Love it... can't wait for more!!!
Thanks Doug. I also started carving after watching your videos. Super novice here, but having a relaxing blast doing it. Beginner tip - As long as I don't tell anyone what I am trying to carve it is way more fun. Last week I started out trying to carve a turkey and ended up with a scuba diver. No one was the wiser. Thanks for sharing!
I want 2 carve all my own wooden kitchenware. ThanQ for this series!
You have the best videos, you explain things in a way that I “get”. Just listening to you is calming and I feel less overwhelmed. You are also an amazingly talented carver. Cudos
Great video, thanks for taking the time to put it together. Good job
Another great video Doug
Thanks for an excellent teaching and training video
Thanks. This video was very informative. Greatly appreciate it 👍
Doug, I just love your honesty and no nonsense approach, thank you, you are a true inspiration. 👍
Love that you started the video outdoors! Thank you for this overview. My aunt has been a wood carver and traveling instructor for years, and I’m now developing an interest. Can’t wait to get started!
Good video doug enjoy your sunday its rainning here a good carving day if i wasnt playing catch up with my chores thanks again
Inspired by Doug I went out this morning and found some wood for my first whittlings. I so hope I can create something worthwhile, we'll see.
Bio Unit Zone 3 no matter what it looks like, treasure it. It’s your very own creation
It's the journey not the destination. Practice practice practice.
I just came across my first carving project I ever carved. I was surprised it turned out as good as it did because I remember it being a complete disaster! Be sure to save those first carvings so you can look back on how far you have come. Enjoy!
Great, what kind of wood did you get?
@@robvegart
Not sure what it is, it was a fallen branch. Anyway, I decided to hone my whittling skills by using a hatchet and Mora knife to turn some cherry branches into walking sticks. Man, it's so therapeutic
Another great video Doug Thanks
Great video. I like how you went over everything and taught us the mistakes you made to keep us from making the same mistake. You got me into carving as there was no videos when I first was interested.
Thanks for the schooling. I enjoyed it. 😁👍
Pretty good video, you really went into the depth of the knives that I 'need' to know, you may have peaked my interest in carving now....Thanks Doug!
Thank you for making this look fun....it is...
White tail deer ( PS ) coffee time
Doug thank you for your information topic on carving tools
Thank you so much, Doug! You make it look really simple when there's a lot of information out there. There's a bunch of kits with several knives, but it's too much to deal with in the beginning. 2 knives is sure enough!
Thanks for all the info Doug! Really helpful!
Hi Doug, I love your videos. What I especially love about it is your laidback attitude, your knowledge and the fact that you don’t cut and add new video material in the middle of a sentence.
Sometimes you’ll blend in a new topic, but that doesn’t bother me at all.
Anyway, keep up the good woodwork.
Greetings from the Netherlands!
Thank you Doug for the information you share. This is helping me progress in my hobby of woodcarving.
So glad I found your channel. Its been perfect for a beginner like me starting this new hobby during this COVID19 time
Thank you for sharing, I’m just now beginning to crave.. you’re so helpful
Doug you are bang on the buck been subscribe to ya for few years now love you content greetings from the uk 🇬🇧🇮🇹🐾🦊
Appreciate the introduction to the tools.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and explaining you don't have to break the bank to get started.
I enjoy and learn watching these videos
Easy to follow, easy to listen to, casual and humble. You’ve inspired me in my initial carving experience.
Thank you so much 😊 you are a master of carving 👏👍👩🎤I’m 77 & just starting to get into small carving 🇺🇸
