    I was able to test the forthcoming firmware update 4.0 for the PlayStation 5. Among many cool features I am looking at the Dolby Atmos sound output this update features. Just like the Xbox Series console, the PS5 is now able to output real Dolby Atmos surround sound within games. Watch me set up my PS5 system and watch me run a selection of games testing it how great they sound on my Dolby Atmos 5.1.4 home movie setup.

    So far... Horizon Forbidden West and Ghost of Tsushima have impressed me the most in Dolby Atmos! in GT7 in 3rd person I could hear the helicopter above but that's all. Spider-Man Remastered was disappointing as well, only heard music from a car slightly above... Ratchet & Clank is ok along with god of war ragnarok. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I especially appreciate when sound designers / mixers place ambient sounds like wind above, they seem understand that just becuase there are no birds, planes or thunder overhead that does not mean the speakers should be dead silent! and I really appreciate this approach. height speakers can always be used to create atmosphere be it reflections or ambiences.

    • @SamDansCouch
      @SamDansCouch  Год назад +1

      Hello unfonishedbusinessGaming 👋😊 thank you for sharing your experience. I 100% agree that the sound designers should always keep ambient sound in mind in general. It all depends on the person mixing the games audio. It’s the same thing in movies too, not every Dolby Atmos movie is mixed to its fullest potential. It’s exciting though to go through all the games and find out which games are already rocking full 3D sound 😎

    • @UnfinishedBusinessInGaming
      @UnfinishedBusinessInGaming Год назад +1

      @@AKSBSU All of the games you've mentioned add an extra layer of atmosphere to create a bubble of sound, in my opinion Horizon FW does it the best as it makes use of the height channels the most. Looking forward to hearing and comparing a natively crafted dolby atmos mix (maybe Spider-Man 2 or AC Mirage) instead of what's happening here which is a conversion. The tempest 3D sound mix / object data packed in a Dolby container (DD plus or TrueHD). 3D audio mixes in games on PS4 & PS5 up to this point have all been optimised for heaphones and TV speakers (virtual surround sound) only, when the audio team creates a proper optimised for home cinema mix I suspect the results will be even better!

    My guess is that most 3d audio for the ps5 was intended for headphones so the dynamic range is much more narrow. The hope is that new games in the future are created with home theater wide dynamic range. For those of you who hav e switched over to Dolby atmos for gaming on the ps5, there is currently no game out right that has a full Dolby atmos mix, so pretty much every game will sound better on Dolby audio or dts depending on your system, I have the Sonos surround sound system with Dolby atmos and no game I tried sounded better with Dolby atmos on, BUT I’ve been playing the new Spiderman 2 game the last two days and MANNN! That game i believe is the first ps5 game with full Dolby atmos mix and it sounds incredible, the atmos setting for this game definitely sounds better than dts and Dolby audio, everything sounds so realistic and the 3d audio is amazing, I have era 300s as rears and gen 3 sub with arc and it’s amazing, this is the only game I’ve sent that takes full advantage of atmos

    Couple of questions, how does the atmos support compare with using neural x? I assume it should be a step up? The downside I assume will be that atmos only works if the game has 3d audio whereas neural x is upmixing atmos into every game.
    Second question is does anyone know why the audio options are greyed out when going from pcm to atmos? Surely the speaker placement options are still important when using atmos? Not sure what the logic in greying them out is? As my greyed out sound options still say “5.1” the receiver says atmos so it is obviously receiving an atmos signal but still, the lack of speaker options seems concerning?

    • @SamDansCouch
      @SamDansCouch  11 месяцев назад +1

      Hi Luke 👋 the Atmos conversion works best if the game already featured 3D sound before. If it didn’t it will fall back to regular 5.1/7.1. It sounds better in my setup compared to neural x which put wrong sounds and voices sometimes in my Atmos ceiling speakers. Don’t worry about the speaker placements being greyed out. Atmos uses the speaker placement information from your AV receiver settings instead 😎

    From the few games I tested.
    1. Ghost of Tsushima
    So far it's still the best game out of Sony's first party library for this 3D audio. It already sounded great but this now it sounds even more filling. I used it as reference to calibrate the decibel levels on each of my surround speakers.
    2. Days Gone
    I played this for about 30 - 45 minutes or so. Nothing incredible was happening but definitely added more of a 3D space to the world. One cutscene I watched took place in a cabin and the audio certainly boomed a little bit more than it would have on regular PCM. It basically sounded like the sound was reflecting off the interior walls and ceiling which didn't exactly sound great but it is what it is. But again I've noticed that this 3D audio implementation doesn't allow the user to lock dialogue to the center channel speaker and it's very annoying hearing voices come out of left, right and center all at once.
    I didn't get a thunderstorm though unfortunately and I have a feeling that the audio for that specifically will sound better than any other game.
    3. The Last of Us Part 1
    Now you would think that Naughty Dog would have the best version of this 3D audio because they are wizards and there soundscapes usually sound better than any other game the majority of the time. It doesn't seem to be the case here especially since the back environment audio is very quiet when setting the game to max dynamic range. Now of course I could change the settings and make the dynamic range more narrow which I may try later on but I don't prefer that at all in any game and my system is perfectly capable to using the maximum setting. This game also features an even worse case of dialogue coming from front channels along with the center and you can almost hear it overlapping with an echo, super annoying. I did however get some also height channel water drops falling from the interior roof of the Pittsburgh hotel into the water below men, now that sounded fucking awesome.
    4. Cyberpunk 2077
    Pretty decent implantation. All sounds are very evenly spaced throughout the environment. When V talks the sound seems like it plays from every speaker like you're inside his head which is honestly pretty cool. Other NPC's voices can be a bit loud though in conversations. But other than that walking around the city sounds great especially with Chinese announcements echoing through the streets.
    And last but certainly not least...
    5. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare
    Seriously, wow and wow. I thought this would sound like it always does which is pretty great but oh man this sounds awesome with Atmos turned on! It definitely doesn't support Atmos itself natively but CoD always used Dolby Digital for mastering their audio. The soundscape is greatly enhanced. From enemy ships zooming by you, getting shot at in a cockpit of a Jackal, the audio of other soldiers and crewmates to the wind swept cliffs of Mars. The audio is outstanding now and I was not expecting it. It made the game I love even better.
    It's seeming like more and more that they will really have to refine this to make these games sound better in the future. It is only a Beta after all so hopefully that happens.

    I tested Dolby Atmos on my 5.1.2 system and compared to regular 5.1 through MPCM, I noticed that it does a small volume bump, It's not as clear and precise as MPCM, and it pans through the different speakers way faster than MPCM (Not in a good way). I wonder if it's because it doesn't know my speaker positionning (Even if I calibrated my receiver). The advantage of using regular 5.1, is that you can accuratly set your speakers position in the PS5 settings and since the PS5 itself is decoding the signal and sending it as raw MPCM according to that accurate speaker map, I feel like it's way more accurate. I also wonder how they deal with Dolby Atmos for Games limitations (less objects than just using Tempest as is). I sure hope it will get better for games that are mixed in Dolby Atmos, because right now, the tradeoff is not worth it for me.

      Hi Flyback777 👋🏻 thank you for sharing your detailed experience. I haven’t had any positioning problems with my set up. I just played some more games and every enemy I encountered was in the right place according to my “sound dome”. I never used the PlayStation speaker placement settings. I did though very detailed oriented set up my surround sound 5.1.4 with Dirac live and a UMIK-1 microphone. In the end we are getting the tempest 3d sound converted to Dolby Atmos and from what I experienced the implementation of tempest 3d varies in quality depending what game you play. The more developers use tempest 3d the better the sound placements will surely become. I’m already very happy with it and glad Sony finally thought of us surround sound enthusiasts 😎👍

    Technically, you shouldn't hear rain above you from a mixing standpoint. Rain makes no sound as it falls, and what you hear is when rain hits things. So if there's nothing above you in the game for rain to hit, you should hear thunder above... but the sound of rain hitting objects around you. If, however, you're in a forest, you would hear rain hitting the leaves above you. Whether that's actually reflected in the game depends on the devs and their audio engine.

      Hi TheReverendSlim, it just doesn’t use the ceiling speakers for atmosphere. They could have done the rain drops hitting the umbrella depending on how your game camera is positioned, or the surround sound of weather in general. The Dolby Atmos video demos are mixed this way and some movies do this too. It is all mixing thing and always depends on the sound guy of each game and movie as well. It is cool though that the tempest 3D translates so well into Dolby Atmos. A great addition even for older games 😊

      @@SamDansCouch Mixing for games is way different than mixing for movies, but point taken. They could have put a little environmental sound above the viewport so that it translated both to Tempest and when ported out to Atmos.

    its quite worthless having atmos without atmos for headphones since people mostly gaming with headphones, and probably one out of ten thousand ps5 owners have a proper atmos setup.

      This update is mainly for home theater output so people with a good receiver or soundbar can output better sound from the PS5.

      Both are very similar in terms of what they are doing and capable of.
      At the end it doesn’t really matter.
